Across The Pond: Digga D

by Paul Varndell

Digga D is without a doubt one of the standout emerging artists from the U.K. Drill/Rap Scene, with each track bringing more success to the young, future star’s career. Hailing from Ladbroke Grove in London, an area that has birthed many great MC’s such as AJ Tracey who even has a song in the charts right now named after the place, Digga D is certainly making his name travel. Known for his, at times, graphic lyrics and syncopated, unique flow; Digga D managed to stand out amongst the rest in a genre that is quickly becoming oversaturated with new artists. His lyrical ability is next to none, with punchlines every other line and genius word play and still at only 19 years of age, the West Londoner has been in the public eye for both good and bad press over the last 12 months…which leads us on to his 3 tracks you HAVE to hear.

Next Up

CGM, previously ‘1011’, took their turn to be ‘Next Up’, which was really Digga D’s first freestyle that had an impact on the scene. However this song was taken down by YouTube at just after 10 million views. The group were gaining a name for themselves amongst the media and police, which ended up in a court order being filed, banning 5 members of the CGM Crew including Digga D from making music. The crew’s ‘Next Up’ was predicted to have over 25 million views by now and is regarded as an important track for the culture. Recently we saw artists such as Krept and Konan go into the House of Parliament to talk about the fact that essentially, Drill Music is a way out for many of these artists, but the banning of this song was for many, a turning point where something had to change in order for the music to continue. Take a listen.

No Diet

The chorus on this track is so catchy that you’re guaranteed to listen to it again after a first run through. The choppy flow and bouncy rhyme structure make the Ghosty Productions sound all the more hard. Bars like “They had me in the can like Fosters, Little star buck for the cream, no Costa” illustrate just how good Digga D’s wordplay can be and also how well he can use it to craft such imagery in his tracks. This track really gives you that bass face and the video’s use of Coca Cola is quite frankly brilliant.

Gun Lean (Remix)

The Top 10 hit that had the nation dancing. The entire nation including Premier League football players were ‘Gun Leaning,’ which led to it getting a huge set of names for the inevitable remix, Digga D being one of them. To say his verse doesn’t stand out would be a ridiculous claim. He comes in so strong and confident with a flow that skates through, each rhyme skipping over the beat and in many ways, he steals the show. If you haven’t already heard this track then you’re in for a real treat.

So what’s next for Digga D? Well, May of this year, he dropped his project Double Tap Diaries which still had to pass what is essentially a ‘screening’ before he could release them, after his court injunction. However Digga D really has bounced back bigger than ever, with the album dropping at the same time as his first ‘Fire In The Booth’, which did not disappoint. The album is a strong project which features the typical, cheeky, lyrical play you can expect from Digga D, but if you want to hear some insane game references such as,“I got beef with white yutes, but I got Black Opps 2, if O get that Call of Duty, I pull up and crash no Bandicoot,” then you MUST check out his FITB. Digga D does remain fairly low on social media (with his Instagram only having 6 photos), so it’s hard to get a taste for what could be in the works next for the young star. Whatever the case, he’s certainly an emerging artist in the scene that you must watch, as he’s set to stand out from the crowd.
