With a style that rests skilfully between the grounds of trap and bass, Los Angeles-based Barely Great is known for crafting hulking basslines and bewildering experimental drops concealed with seemingly simplistic names such as ‘SUBMERGE’ and ‘TRANSMISSION’.
Marking the fourth of five total tracks in his latest EP, ‘IMPERFECT’ builds heavily upon aspects of familiarity and nostalgia, utilizing similar components from previous releases while allowing Barely Great to demonstrate the true technicality of his craft.
“The leads, atmospheres, and textures in IMPERFECT all use similar sound design techniques that I’ve used in past releases. Though put together in relatively simple arrangements, I think the layering and added minimal differences really give the track life. Recently, I’ve started focusing on layering basses to create different textures, and I think this track really hit home with this concept,” he reflects humbly regarding his ability to repurpose previous techniques in novel and exciting ways.
A muffled digital warbling and single repetitive snare present an immediate sense of depth as the track begins to unfold. A complex layering of percussion echoes like the gentle unwinding of a clock as the tune catapults into an aqueous off-kilter rhythm of metallic prods and liquified gurgles.
