Melbourne based Tom Rose, producing under the Jives moniker, has teamed up with the ever evolving hub for spicy underground music More Creativity Records to bring us a first class ticket all aboard the groove train. His newest release is almost a year in the making, stating that “I get very easily distracted so the music writing has been sporadic over this past year haha. Recently I’ve been getting back into it and I’ve been able to finish some stuff that I feel more comfortable putting out there again.” Boy, are we glad he found his comfort zone again.
Music lovers should be incredibly pleased this one made the final cut. The song opens looping the vocals “this generation” while playing a silky smooth melody in the background with white noise that feels like putting your toes in sand. Putting this whole effect together while closing your eyes gives you the sensation of floating in this warm glow that emanates from everything and nothing at the same time. When the beat comes in it’s this delightful mixture of future bass sounds mixed into a housey arrangement that makes it incredibly difficult not to move, especially with a grin on your face. Rose explains the origins of ‘Dopamine Thumb’ with “I was listening to some jazzy stuff by Pharoah Sanders and decided to try and replicate a chord progression in one of his songs. Everything else sprung up around those chords mainly. The title sort of refers to the fact that I spend too much time scrolling on Instagram.” When he’s not swiping up and down on Instagram, he’s pushing his musical limits, stating that making music is “very therapeutic I suppose. I always get excited starting something new so that makes me want to try new stuff and keep going.”
If ‘Dopamine Thumb’ is any inkling of what this Aussie artist has coming next, the world’s ears are in for a collective, relaxing treat. He already has many releases in store for the rest of the year, and an EP dropping in early 2020. But before all that, make sure to check out ‘Dopamine Thumb’ for yourself below!
