S-Type Returns With The Masterpiece That Is The ‘Beat’ EP

by Victor Lovo

Residing in the heart of Scotland, LuckyMe Record’s chief beat maker, S-Type, has been pushing the boundaries of what a beat could be for about a decade. His debut EP Billboard dropped in 2012, and since then, S-Type has amassed a very impressive discography with major collaborations with other LuckyMe superstars. These include the likes of Hudson Mohawke and Lunice of TNGHT, as well as projects with many A-List Rappers like Pusha T and Young Thug.

The beat master returns with a six-song EP that reminds us what’s so great about instrumental hip-hop as a genre. With the absence of any real vocals, S-Type beautifully uses this extra space in the mix with insane percussion elements on every track while still letting the tracks breathe.

Starting with ‘Pebbles,’ S-Type showcases his synth work masterfully all while combining eerie and melodic synths with a guitar riff making an appearance later into the track. Next up, ‘Fetch’ turns up the energy with the horns taking center stage and the trippy drums providing support. On ‘Gazelle’ the mesmerizing melody is revealed immediately and is soon joined by a familiar trap drum pattern. ‘Tick-Tock’ leaves the listener stuck in limbo since this track is a constant loop that starts simple, but ends artistically chaotic with the expert placement of percussion components. ‘Infinite Lives’ is arguably the feel-good track on the project, leading with a major melody and some of the craziest sampling you’ll ever hear. Finally, we come to ‘Waiting,’ which is lead by a powerful and hefty synths, accompanied by wavy vocal samples. Be sure to check this project out below!
