A true innovator in the electronic music scene and beyond, Cashmere Cat has become one of the most sought after producers ever since the release of his debut Mirror Maru EP a few years back. In his debut album, 9, the talented artist pushed pop music to new limits, collaborating with superstars such as Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Selena Gomez and more to establish himself among the best forward-thinking pop producers in the game. After an almost two year-long hiatus, Cashmere Cat has returned with his sophomore album PRINCESS CATGIRL to bless his fans with more innovative music.
Perhaps an alias or alter ego, the character named in the album title appears to have an underlying influence throughout all of the tracks of the project. The songs all have the same high-pitched, heavily-processed vocals that drive the melodies and flow forward, making it feel like Cashmere Cat is trying to tell a narrative with his songs through the mysterious character. Never losing a certain aspect of his signature sound, Cashmere Cat has curated a seven-track piece that is very different than his previous album yet is still undeniably his pristine work. Likely to please pop fans more than electronic music fans, the artist has sampled the likes of Christina Aguilera in ‘WATERGIRL’ and XXXTentacion in ‘MOO,’ creating cutesy, rose-coloured-glasses soundscapes. Nonetheless, the experimentation behind the sounds are not lacking, but are slightly shorter than what electronic music fans would have hoped for, with the last thirty seconds of ‘BACK FOR YOU’ being a prime example.
