Guest Mix + Interview – FLY

by Colin

Hailing from Los Angeles, FLY is one of the underground scene’s best kept secrets. In recent time he’s become a SoundCloud favourite for his incredible originals and fresh flips. His style weaves together beautiful worldly atmospheres with deep and dirty bass and wonky sound design. Hot off an official remix for Champagne Drip, FLY is set to drop his new single on Friday via Phuture Collective. Ahead of the release, we connected with the talented producer for an exclusive guest mix and quick interview. The guest mix is stacked with IDs including his own originals, collabs with L*o*J and BONNEMA, plus unreleased heat from Rohaan, Vide, Rome in Silver x BONNEMA, Player Dave & Hudson Lee. Stream the mix and read the interview below.

Take us through the mix. Where are you taking listeners with this one?

The mix allowed me to show some of my new unreleased music as well as IDs by other homies. My new tracks are going in a deeper, more bassy direction so it was nice to be able to showcase that change a little bit.

The value of minimalism and making music with the idea that ‘less is more’.

What made you want to start making music?

I started playing instruments as a kid and was in a few bands, eventually transitioning to electronic music. I was inspired by the creativity of DAWs, though I still work with non-electronic musicians in a freelance context doing audio engineering etc.

What’s something that you know now about production, that you wish you knew when you started?

The value of minimalism and making music with the idea that ‘less is more.’

A lot of your tracks pack a tribal/wordly energy. Where does this influence come from? How did it become a key part of your music?

I’ve always loved music from other parts of the world when traveling and I felt like there was so much history of rhythms and harmonic scales that are largely ignored in music from this part of the world.

Getting out of the city and being outdoors is a big one – heading to the Desert or to the Mountains is always essential for a reset.

What makes you happy outside of music?

Getting out of the city and being outdoors is a big one – heading to the Desert or to the Mountains is always essential for a reset.

What’s the last song that made you stop what you were doing and just listen?

Kaya Project – Soul Sanctuary (Bwoy De Bhajan Remix). It’s one of those songs that needs a full listen through from start to finish.

What do you have planned for the remainder of the year?

New single out later this week, an official remix for Wakaan, a track on the upcoming Sleeveless Records compilation, an EP, a single with a new Label that’s launching soon (offshoot of an existing bass Label), and releasing some DnB lol.
