Forever pushing music that breaks the barriers of genres and conformity, fans are always in for a treat when MAD ZOO announces a new project. Following up on the impressive debut from Groke last month, Pedestrian Tactics (formerly known as Corporate) makes his mark on the esteemed imprint today with his newest four-track project titled Nerds Trying To Dance.
With an EP boasting such a unique name, it comes as no surprise to see the work accompanied by a coding hack that pushes fans to work a little harder to access the tracks. “The prompt for ‘Nerds Trying To Dance’ began with a tweet from a programmer who was listening to one of my tracks during a coding session. I realized I hadn’t designed the track for coding, ‘But what would happen if I did?’ For the last year I dove into programming-inspired niches and eventually learned to write a bit of Swift, C#, and JavaScript as a result. The EP itself makes use of plenty of programmatic scales contrasted by explorative accidental sounds,” Pedestrian Tactics states about his latest project.
Robotically meticulous with no lack of futuristic undertones, every track from the Nerds Trying To Dance EP is a quirky journey through electronic music. The previously-released ‘matingcall.exe’ is a fun bass house jam that uses mechanical sounds paired with a natural rhythmic beat to create an uplifting aura. The project’s title track follows, where Pedestrian Tactics employs hypnotic looped percussion and a gritty lead synth to drive listeners into a trance in one of the most unique electro-leaning tracks of the year. ‘Where’d My Head Go’ moves fluidly through expansive chords and a grooving bassline, with the repeated vocal title hook providing a trippy interlude throughout. Capping things off with ‘Kernel Panic,’ Pedestrian Tactics simulates an 80’s inspired computer hack through frantic arpeggios and a sharp tempo before wobbly basses shine in both drops.
