sumthin sumthin has had one busy year. With consistent releases spanning for months, playing festivals, touring with the Lost Dogz, and most recently releasing a mix with Zed’s Dead’s Deadbeats Radio, sumthin sumthin has been pushing his sound to the public with relentless energy. It all culminates into the release of his new EP on Deadbeats, ‘When Ghosts Fall Asleep’. In the 4 track EP, sumthin sumthin takes us on a dark journey through his unique production style, giving fans perspective into his ideas on the metaphysical.
‘Trouble’ is the first track off the EP, and sumthin sumthin immediately sets the mood with a haunting atmosphere and shifting frequencies. The drops hold that signature sumthin sumthin sound, largely percussive based, that twist and wiggle around the beat, creating an uncontainable excitement that leaves listeners in a constant state of groove. Coming up next is ‘Sink,’ which begins with lush synths that glide down, revealing an absolutely thumping beat. The contrast of melodic and atonal elements in this track are absolutely astounding, and the bridge of ‘Sink’ gets an honorable mention for its beauty. Continuing the streak of melodic starts, ‘Take A Sip’ kicks off with captivating vocals that quickly take a dark turn and lead to a thick, wonky, sumthin sumthin drop. Finally, we come to ‘Ghost,’ which is undoubtedly one of the standout tracks from the EP. sumthin sumthin truly crafted a journey, embarking with haunting vocals, you only get so far before you notice the ever growing bass line that suddenly collapses into a monstrosity of a build up. When you finally reach the drop, you are thrown down a hole of squirming synths and flickering percussion that is almost impossible to climb back up from.
