Tyler, The Creator’s ‘Yonkers’ was a breakout smash that helped set the stage for the rapper’s long and impressive career. Almost a decade later, Chicago-based producer Vermyllion is resurrecting the track with a wild new flip that’s dropping today on Spicybois’ Bone Apple Teeth compilation. The opening is familiar, leveraging the instrumental loop from the original with some heavy processing to make it feel fresh and even grittier. Wasting no time, Vermyllion adds in some filthy bass. After a quick drum break the track doubles down on the filth using the sampled synth stab to cut through the drops like a freshly sharpened sickle. Just as things began to mellow out the talented producer brings in a rerecorded variation of the original’s opening lines to punch things up. “I actually recorded that vocal sample after I had already written the rest of the track. It was definitely a cherry on top type of decision. I thought it would be cool to incorporate more of the original track and felt like it definitely carried the energy of the tune through the breakdown and then building into the second drop.” Vermyllion tells us.
Vermyllion’s ‘Yonkers Flip’ presents the perfect fusion of nostalgic elements and forward-thinking, hard-hitting bass. Blast this one below.
