PREMIERE: 10K’s ‘G’ Lives Up To Its Name

by Colin

Hailing from the land of 10,000 lakes (Minnesota), 10K is a producer you need to be watching. After catching our ear with tracks like ‘Body’ and ‘Recoil,’ we have the pleasure of premiering his first release of the year ‘G’. Living up to its name, the track is gritty, grimy and gangster. The pitched down “I’m a G” samples set the stage as the percussion takes the lead. Stripping back all elements outside of the drums before the drop builds peak anticipation before the bass fills things out. Rounding things out perfectly comes an intoxicating guitar sample that gives ‘G’ an exotic touch. “I found a cool world guitar sample when I was still in the idea phase of producing. I chopped up the sample and re-pitched it to the correct key and experimented for a while before landing on the final melody. It was a bit of a challenge getting the right balance between the 808s and guitar pattern but I’m really happy with how it turned out.” 10K tells us.

The talented producer offers a deeper insight into his inspiration stating, “The toms on this song are actually kick samples pitched up an octave and then processed and sidechained to the main kick in the track. I was really excited when I figured this out and I’ve been using that trick in a lot of the music I’m currently working on. I was originally inspired to make this track after going to a show at a club one night. I heard the headliner play a song that had gaps between the kick/bass with just percussion playing and noticed how the contrast made the kick/bass hit even harder when it did play, so I tried to create a similar feel on the drops in this song.” The new technique and inspiration definitely worked well as ‘G’ is a certified slapper.
