It is evident that Tel-aviv based duo Stereotype have been building a community of trap and bass enthusiasts around the globe. Although what really makes this power-duo stand out is their passion to consistently showcase their innovative and hard-hitting sound. Leon Nikishyev and Adam Ashurov made their appearance on Quality Goods Records last year with their stunning collaboration with Perk Pietrek on ‘Willow,’ which takes listeners on a euphoric journey through slow-tempo trap music. By drawing on personal inspirations reflected in their production style, their timeless single ‘Tokyo’ is a personal favorite as vibrant synths and soothing percussion brings out glowing imagery of the most-populated city in the world. Now if you know Stereotype well, they are always one step ahead when it comes to delivering trap, future bass and even dubstep infused singles. To provide a little taste of Stereotype’s unique sound design, we have the pleasure of releasing their jaw-dropping guest mix infused with a ton of unreleased music and self-made edits. We also caught up with them for an interview to learn more about the talented duo.
To start off, what is the daily routine for the life of Stereotype? Any places that are your “go to” spots in Tel Aviv?
The daily routine looks really tight in regards to time management. We are jumping between day jobs, freelance production job opportunities and of course building up Stereotype as a brand. Basscamp is a very good bass and trap line in Israel and this is our “go to” place. On top of that we often happen to play shows there.
The music we are going to release in 2020 are going to incorporate a lot of Middle East cultural music style.
There’s been a lot of discussion regarding how you differentiate yourselves in the industry by incorporating a clear personal connection with your music. Would you say growing up in Israel has influenced your dynamic sound?
Of course it is. The music we are going to release in 2020 are going to incorporate a lot of Middle East cultural music style. Also, we are try to take inspiration from everything that was not even discovered yet.
We have always been curious about how Stereotype first originated. How did you guys come together to become the power-duo you are recognized for today?
Oh that is an interesting story. I actually moved to Israel in the late 2011 and used to study and live in a boarding school in Jerusalem. At the same time Leon used to study and live in Tel Aviv. It just happened that my cousin used to study with Leon in the same class. So, in 2013 on one of the holidays I stayed at my cousin’s place and met Leon. We both realized that we make music and can help each other become better musicians. You know how they say family brings people together (Laughing).
If we compare today’s trap and bass scene and 2014-2015’s, than yes, it is on the rise. Back in 2014 there was no scene at all, and the reason for that is the political situation in Israel.
Would you say the trap and bass scene is currently on the rise in Israel? If there is one thing you would change about the scene, what would it be?
Israel is a very interesting place regarding music scene. If we compare today’s trap and bass scene and 2014-2015’s, than yes, it is on the rise. Back in 2014 there was no scene at all, and the reason for that is the political situation in Israel. Big artists like Skrillex canceled their shows due to the political situation. As the bass scene grew, it started to diversify and incorporate loads of hip hop elements. So we try to mix trap and bass with hip hop here in Israel.
One thing we would change is the way Israeli promoters organize the shows. We try and leverage the shows by diversifying an event with different styles of music in order to bring more awareness to people regarding the trap and bass scene.
Our goal in Asia is to get busy with Stereotype and to be independent.
You’ve mentioned that you are both moving to Bangkok next year to pursue your career as full-time producers. Can you share any goals you have while being in Asia?
Our goal in Asia is to get busy with Stereotype and to be independent. As we have mentioned before, the scene in Israel is tiny in comparison to Asia. That is why it is very important for us to move because we want to be local.
With a series of innovative originals and trap-infused madness, what do you want listeners to take away from the Guest Mix?
When we were working on the Guest Mix, one of the most important things for us was the attention and overall experience. We created it in a way for the listener to enjoy every second of it. We also included lots of unreleased music and self-made edits to be unique for the listener.
Over the span of 2019, you have been surprising us with constant drops featuring talented artists such as Perk Pietrek and room583. Can we expect any future collaborations for 2020? Are you able to share any potential names with us today?
Of course we will collaborate. This is one of the main principles of Stereotype. If we talk about potential names, you can probably expect Perk Pietrek, room583, DUCKWORTHSOUND, ROUND2, ELEX, Savage Kids, ONZ, ill-esha, Jacob Gibson, CUT_, Bad Luck Boy and many more.
You recently released ‘Tokyo’ which takes listeners on a euphoric journey through the world’s most populated city. Can you break down what it was like creating this unique single?
Right before we created ‘Tokyo’, we had a guitar recording session. After that, we recorded a couple of guitars, sampled and processed it until it started to remind us a sound of Koto. Once we heard it we instantly realised that we were onto something and then we chose the direction for this song’s production.
If we asked you in one year about what Stereotype has accomplished in 2020. What do you hope the answer will be?
We are an independent duo with crazy shows, conceptual music and a unique sound that stands out.
