Chopsoe Unveils Debut EP ‘Self Reality’

by Alessio Anesi

No longer than 4 months ago I was here, on the pages of FUXWITHIT, telling you how badly you should focus your eyes on Chopsoe. Did you listen to me? Yes? Then you should probably jump to the end of the article and listen for the hundredth time to Self Reality, If not, then you better have a read!

I’ve been following Chopsoe for nearly 4 years now, quite a long time in the current world where producers and hits come and go in a blink of an eye, and you know what? For all this time he’s been consistently and untiringly working on his sound with an uncommon dedication that, in the end, has payed off with the release of this superb debut EP via the always-on-point Sans Huile de Palme imprint. Self Reality gifts us with 4 instrumental (yes, no cheesy pop vocals) tunes built around his very characteristic sound that you’ll hardly hear somewhere else. In a lot of cases, when I listen a EP or a tune I find myself saying: “this sounds like Flume,” “this is reminds me of San Holo,” etc. While listening to Chopsoe instead, the only thing I can think about is: “this sounds like Chopsoe.” The way he re-imagines hip hop rhythms with a strong electronic influence that winks to the infamous French touch, is one of a kind. Where the sharp synths meet the urban vibes, some dark magic happens, creating a brand new perception of the motto “fuckagenre”.

Since the reality its not just a matter of sounds, but above all based on light and sight, Self Reality came with a proper music video that shows the artist’s work through the destructuring of the movement of two dancers in a metropolitan environment. Can you now understand what I meant when I wrote, “The power and the charm of Chopsoe’s art aren’t indeed in fancy announcements or trend-friendly releases, but it dwells in the details?”
