Even if my role as a writer should mean that I know things, many things, Electric Hawk remained hidden from my eyes and ears until their debut compilation showed up in our team’s chat and Colin took over an episode of their radio show. Let me say, what a surprise they have been since then! Interviews, spotlights, write-ups: their passion and dedication for the underground is definitely inspiring! Of all these things, however, their latest effort is what intrigued me the most. After scrolling through their multifaceted website, a compelling question popped up in my mind: what the hell will I find inside their second compilation?
The answer? Everything. Or better, anything dope enough!
Rebirth is, in fact, an amusing ride through the funfair that is the bass scene. There’s no time to rest, no time to waste, during this 50 minute album you’ll keep jumping from a attraction to attraction: from dubstep rollercoasters to midtempo haunted houses and drum&bass Ferris wheels, there’s something for every taste! Whether you approach the album with seasoned or virgin ears, Rebirth manages to entertain and offer plenty of interesting clues about bass music subgenres. You should have seen my face when I’ve noticed Juche and Fyoomz’s names on the tracklist! I don’t consider myself a messiah, but I have to say I’m not used to seeing wave acts featured on blogs except on my episodic articles. Therefore, seeing not one but even three wave tracks on a single album not released by a label specialized in the genre totally blew me away. Besides these ones, the other tune that took the crown for me is, with no contest, Voliik‘s ‘Outer Edged’. This 6 minutes cinematic and world-building opus, definitely deserves more than a binge listen, while its fierce and apocalyptic drops are perfect for shatter festival crowds.
Shout out to the Electric Hawk team for this second compilation and for the daily commitment to the whole scene. Good hunt!
