In my own scale of values, ‘art of art sake’ is an untouchable principle that can’t be turned down, but at the same time I can’t deny that, when music crosses the path with social themes and activism, wonderful and mighty things happen. With the annual International Women’s Day upon us, Brooklyn queen Jeanie has seized the opportunity to raise the voice of the female bass community by packing her formidable GRL GANG into a celebrative compilation that speaks loud and proud.
GRL GANG’s debut album RIOT! includes exclusive music from acts the like of Lizzy Jane, Jinx, Space.Wolf in addition to the, already iconic, monstrous collaboration between JEANIE, LEVEL UP!, MADGRRL and SIPPY. From the insanely heavy basses of ‘High Again’ and UMBRA to the electro infused ‘QUEEN BITCH’ and ‘Purity’ (my favourite track of the compilation) passing through some drum & bass and all things bass, RIOT! perfectly reflects the pluralistic nature of GRL GANG, where all kind of sensibilities are not only allowed, but encouraged to shine.
100% of the proceeds from the release will be donated to Girls, Inc, a network of nonprofit organizations that empowers girls ages 6-18 in the United States and Canada to be strong, smart and bold through healthy living, academic enrichment and support and life skills instruction.
