Philadelphia’s Tiedye Ky dazzled fans this past September with the release of his iconic debut album Baby Blue and the Super Moon, which was highly regarded by the entirety of our team and a vast majority of the community-at-large, along with cementing the #43 spot on our Top 50 Tracks of 2020 list with ‘Never Cage a Butterfly.’ This emotional sonic thoroughfare tugged on the heartstrings with tear-jerking vocals and sensational guitar sampling, while simultaneously satiating a robust appetite for bass-heavy productions. Now, he’s returned with a fresh music video for another one of the standout tracks from the album with ‘Living Right Now’, and coupled it with a charity mission to honor his immensely talented friend Pipus that was taken from the world much too soon.
The ‘Livin’ Right Now’ music video is a tribute to my late homie Pipus. When I heard of his passing, I didn’t believe it at first. I almost laughed and thought “man he really got us this time, this will be his ultimate skit. It’s his way of putting on his greatest show.” He was always smiling, always laughing so hard. His presence in a room outshined and broke down the very walls he stood within.
When I got home from his funeral, I wallowed in front of my computer for a bit before writing easily one of my favorite songs ever in a single session. From start to finish, I spilled my emotions in one swift motion. Matt and Kenny, I love you. Thank you for everything. – Tiedye Ky
For those unfamiliar with his work and overall personality, Pipus was a care-free light amidst a world that consistently cast opaque shadows. Renowned locally for his hysterical comedy videos posted on his Public Cinema Club website that he made with his partner, he was named one of Philly’s best comedians in 2017. He was also featured on numerous insanely popular tracks with his friends that highlighted his exceedingly unique rap persona. His distinct personality, seemingly limitless creativity, and unparalleled humor seemed like they would propel him to levels of success most people would only dream of. The world is truly a darker place without his warm embrace.
To honor his fallen friend, Tiedye Ky has started the Pipus Forever Mural Project which aims to raise $5,000 to have a mural created in Philadelphia to permanently affix his presence in the city that he called home and made such great contributions to.
Forward thinking, soul searching, boundary pushing and influential artist Pipus.
I haven’t met many other people who shined a light like Pipus did. Always making everyone around him laugh and laughing himself.
I believe his artistry, his music, his comedy and his vision has influenced so many people. The community of young people in Philadelphia, the music community we are a part of, and all the people I met through Pipus loved him and miss him dearly.
My goal is to have a Mural of Pipus put up in Philly. My efforts are all completely non-profit. Any donation will go towards the application process and preparation as well as hiring an artist to paint the mural. –Tiedye Ky
If you can spare any monetary compensation to support cementing the legacy of a beloved creator in the music community and Philadelphia specifically, it would mean the world to him, his fans, friends, and family. You can find links to a petition, merchandise, and a GoFundMe for the cause below.
