Sydney, Australia seems to be a swiftly rising home for some of the brightest up-and-coming producers in the bass music scene as of late. Giving birth to some of the hottest trap and dubstep in the entire game right now, it’s no wonder we had to tap one of their burgeoning stars for the latest edition of our guest mix + interview series. Rebranding from his adored William. project just a few short years ago, Tek Genesis made an abrupt pivot to much more experimental and aggressive sounds. His debut album Temp offered up a diverse, complex array of sounds and styles that felt reminiscent of both tackling deep-rooted emotions and taking a flying saucer for a swagger-laden joyride throughout the Milkyway Galaxy. Lately, he’s been serving up spicy dub-centered arrangements like his latest ‘Contact‘ with major emphasis on squeaky clean sound design that massages the eardrums and spikes blood pressure levels. Now, he’s come onto our platform to truly flex what he’s capable of with a 30-minute guest mix chock-full of hellacious unreleased music from himself and his friends. If you need something HEAVY to get yourself through the day, look no further! Check out the full interview and guest mix for yourself below!
For long-term fans of your project, you originally made a name for yourself under your William. moniker. What made you make the transition into Tek Genesis, and make a stark divergence from your trap roots?
I began to just lose a connection to the type of music associated with the ‘William.’ project. towards the end, it felt like I was just making music for the sake of making it for others as opposed to doing it for myself.
It seems as of late that you’re diving into more dubstep sounds in both your productions and tracks you work into sets! Do you feel like that’s the main direction you’re going to go from here on out, or would you consider your style more fluid?
It definitely will be the main course of my direction going forward but I like to think that my production style is fairly fluid. I’ll be drawing influences from all genres but my main focus and structure will be fairly riddim heavy!
I just really enjoy making the music I like to listen to and it’s an added bonus that there are cool people out there that enjoy listening to it too!
You just released ‘Contact’ off of your upcoming EP! Can you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind the track and the project as a whole?
The overarching project is kind of like another step in refining my music sound as a whole. ‘Contact’ is a showcase of exactly that, my next step forward with everything that I’ve learned and been inspired by so far.
What are you trying to convey to listeners through your music and project as a whole?
I don’t really think I’m trying to convey anything in particular. If I’m being honest I just really enjoy making the music I like to listen to and it’s an added bonus that there are cool people out there that enjoy listening to it too!
Do you have any daily rituals that you believe lead you to success?
For me personally; shower, clean my workstation, bottle of water.
I usually try to totally disconnect from directly listening to music and focus my attention on doing other things I enjoy
When you hit a creative rut, what are some things you do to reset and find inspiration again?
I usually try to totally disconnect from directly listening to music and focus my attention on doing other things I enjoy. helps clear my mind when I take a week or two from thinking about anything music-related!
What hobbies outside of music did you have as a child that helped mold you into the person you are today?
I enjoyed playing video games, that’s about it lmao. That being said, I love drawing influence from video game OST so maybe that’s indirectly influenced my music.
With as lauded as your debut album Temp was, when can fans expect another full album from you?
Couldn’t guarantee it anytime soon but I definitely want to do another!
What are you looking forward to most in the next 12 months?
Playing shows! A lot of venues are reopening here in AUS so I’m keen to play all this new music out to crowds.
You prepared the 151st installment of our guest mix series for us today! What should fans expect to hear from this particular mix?
Loads of unreleased music that will hopefully be out soon, and music I’ve been listening to lately!
