Guest Mix + Interview – M?STIC

by Colin

Coming straight from the underground is M?STIC. The California-based artist has been making major waves in the scene with releases on Space Yacht, Phuture Collective, Quality Goods Records, dumb collective., and more. A versatile producer, his sound ranges from hard-hitting trap to experimental bass, rap, and all varieties of electronic music. His debut album HUMAN showcases his broad skills and laid the foundation for the slew of heaters he’s been unleashing over the past year. To further put his talent on display, M?STIC is connecting with us for a Guest Mix + Interview. The mix is riddled with bangers while the interview discusses his origins, the impact music has had on his life, his crew STUNNA POSSE, and much more. Peep both below.

Tell us about the mix. What was your approach when putting it together?

I took my time putting this together to show how creative and versatile I can be when it comes to bass music. Overall, it was a fun experience. Grateful is an understatement when it comes to bringing FUXWITHIT into the world I created around the M?STIC project.

What inspired you to start making music?

Where I grew up wasn’t so pretty, I’d say that pushed me to want to make music to give myself an outlet and ‘make it out the hood’. Which I’m still here, but I’m finally making a name for myself; I used to listen to Gucci Mane, Waka Flaka Flame, Lil Wayne, etc when CD’s were around so that’s my roots and I’ll never forget where I came from.

everyone wants to be on top but never helps the person next to them.

How has music changed who you are as a person over the years?

It changed who I was by letting me know if I want something I gotta go get it, nothing in the industry is just handed to you. I think that’s why I make sure I’m solid and make sure my community is solid in the trap, nobody else is going to do it; everyone wants to be on top but never helps the person next to them.

You’ve collaborated with a ton of incredible artists from capshun to 24hrs, Rockie Fresh, and more. What do you look for in a collaborator?

Well, that’s a good question, it mostly happens natural but I love when people bring something different to the table. I make records based off energy and those songs were masterpieces that were made with a very smooth process behind them.

I like to believe with music you can do anything; there’s no rules… who makes them?

You’ve produced across a variety of styles fusing hip-hop and electronic sounds, from bops like ‘WORTH’ to brutal bass like ‘Crush Em.’ Is there a particular sound you’ve been gravitating towards lately?

I think as an artist you can create anything from music to clothes. I like to believe with music you can do anything; there’s no rules… who makes them? I notice so many people putting themselves in a box and not being as creative anymore. I focus on what’s gonna be here when I’m gone. So to answer your question I’ve been gravitating towards energy and the way I feel to create these future releases that will last forever.

What’s a song or album that’s been stuck on repeat for you for the past month or longer? What keeps you coming back to it?

I’ve been listening to ‘SHAMELESS’ BY GERM & SHAKEWELL. I always come back to that song no matter where I am in life, RIP YAYGO too I’m glad I got to meet and learn off him before he passed. Opened my eyes to how big beats can be when having vocals on them.

We have nothing to lose and our goal is to put people on who deserve it and are slept on.

How did STUNNA POSSE come together? What’s your goal as a platform?

STUNNA POSSE came together in 2019, we are the outcasts of the industry. People tend to overlook talent that is slept on even if their music is dope. We don’t do that or deal with fake shit I think that’s what separates us from everyone. We have nothing to lose and our goal is to put people on who deserve it and are slept on.

What’s on your bucket list? Are there any items you’ve recently ticked off?

My bucket list is to play in front of thousands, I’ve been accomplishing a lot with my team, my girl, and my management. I can’t complain about nothing, everything I wanted is finally happening I just want more now. Which is not bad, but I’ve done a lot this year and I’m proud.

it’s ok to take a breather and collect your thoughts before going back in the game.

In a previous interview, you spoke about the importance of finding a “healthy balance between caring for yourself and caring for others.” Do you have any tips for putting this into practice?

It’s very important to move at your own pace, especially if you feel overwhelmed; it’s ok to take a breather and collect your thoughts before going back in the game. Real ones will understand this and won’t take it lightly, if you take medication don’t be ashamed if it helps and you don’t abuse it but find what helps you deal with all of this pressure. Mental health is very important to me; I feel like a lot of people are quick to talk down on it and I don’t tolerate that.

What do you have lined up for the rest of the year musically?

I have a few out of state shows; planning on turning things international soon. I might drop a project soon too now that things are moving; oh yeah follow me on TIK TOK too I’m taking over that platform at the moment, its “@SOUNDSBYMYSTIC”

Any final words?

LOOKOUT FOR STUNNA POSSE & BADMOUTH. WE DONE PLAYING WIT EVERYONE. YOU WILL SEE WHAT I’M SPEAKING INTO EXISTENCE VERY SOON.
