Guest Mix + Interview – WHOM?

by Colin

Coming straight out of Atlanta, WHOM?‘s brand of “Bass music for your hips,” is exactly what we’ve needed. With too many artists going maximal and trying to craft the wildest sound design, it’s often the more minimal and groove-filled sounds that stand out. WHOM? has this dialed, delivering deep and wubby bass, with knocking drums, and an underlying hip-hop and RnB influence. His standout track ‘Like A Drum’ first caught my ear, but it was his Shibari EP that fully converted me to fandom. Providing a deeper looking into his sound and unique personality, we are pleased to have WHOM? join us for our latest guest mix + interview.

The mix is a wild array of bass-forward sounds, ranging from stellar flips and edits, to killer originals and a few unreleased gems from WHOM? and his friends. The interview covers his secret for hip-shaking tunes, playing events for DEF, passions outside of music, his confusion with wave, and much more. Dive into both below.

Who is WHOM?

WHOM? Is Jeffo? Haha I mean, god I couldn’t have picked a more difficult name to try to use in a sentence. But…yeah I’m 27, flirty, engaged to the most beautiful, clever, mentally ill woman in the universe, and I specialize in making straight men question their sexuality. The WHOM? project however, is my sort of ‘fuck you’ to the loudness wars in music right now. It’s never about thrashing, it’s about dancing. I want the music to be approachable so you could show it to someone who isn’t in the electronic scene and get a response like “I fuxwithit”

Paint us a picture. Where are we headed when we press play on this mix?

Ok so picture this, you’re in 8th grade and you’re at a lit ass party in the homie’s basement/garage…the soda pop is flowing and the Black Eyed Peas just dropped their smash hit ‘My Humps’…needless to say. There was a grind train and someone’s mom is going to be upset about the lack of room for jesus when they come to check on you. In all seriousness this mix is essentially a greatest hits collection of all my favorite things I’ve been playing this year- starting slow and taking you on a journey from Ying Yang Twins to tasteful Dubstep – nothing is really off the table…as long as it’s sexy.

What’s the secret to making hip-shaking tunes?

Ooooooooo ok this is a tricky question…I guess I just try to focus on groove and lean into minimalism instead of making really full music. I notice whenever I try to make a super complex track it just sounds like some acid music (which is cool or whatever) but not really what I’m going for. I think the drums have a lot to do with it too, drums need to be KNOCKIN like an overloaded washing machine.

You had the chance to play a DEF’s THE OFFLINE PROJECT earlier this year. What was your favorite part of that night?

Fun fact, I actually played two sets at that funktion. I was originally booked for Friday but got moved to Saturday last minute – so to appease everyone that bought tix to see me on Friday I did a guilty pleasure set, put on this ratchet ass wig, and played all these headass tracks I would never normally play. I’m talking Make It Bun Dem -> Jah No Partial. Real EDM hot girl shit. But my favorite part of the evening was probably Saturday night when Jon Casey, Chee, & Nitepunk were all gogo dancing on the subs acting a goddamn fool during Chris Lorenzo… iconic behavior.

What’s the last song that truly wowed you?

So there’s two that really stand out to me:
This new ID from Black Carl! I believe the working title is ‘MOVE!’ (It makes me feel like a slut & is in this mix)
This Nitepunk remix of My Destiny by Imanu, it’s not even done yet but it’s such a damn vibe and makes me feel like the prettiest girl at the ball. (THANK YOU CARL & LASHA FOR LETTING ME INCLUDE THESE I LOVE U BOTH SO MUCH)

When you’re not working on music what do you enjoy doing most?

I love to cook, which is not only sexy but necessary for survival. My dad owned this seedy pizza shop in Chapel Hill, NC when I was younger and worked in restaurants the majority of my childhood so cooking has always been a passion of mine. I also love smoking some jazz cabbage and watching horror movies or playing video games with my fianceé. I’ve also been loving going to the gym recently, I somehow gained like 50lbs over the last 2 years so I’m trying to get my fake body back before Okeechobee.

What have you been working on lately? Can fans expect some new music soon?

Working on way too much haha…fuck. I have three many collabs I need to put in work on…specifically have this one collab with VEIL that I HAVE to work on this week. I really want to release a single this month but the holidays are such a weird time to drop…honestly fuck it ima do it…but if this turns out to be a lie..I’ll drop in January I swear. Trying to figure out the next era of sound for the project.

How’s your puppy doing? How has your life changed since you got her?

So we have Opal (2yr old psychopath) and now we have Pearl (5 months Dec 7th, mark your calendar). But it’s honestly been so nice having another dog for Opal to play with. The first couple of months were a bit of a pain in the ass but that’s showbiz baby, love my girls.

Do you understand wave yet?

Girl…I TRIED to make it to understand it and ended up making ‘Tired of U’ which I have been told is NOT wave…so…whatever. Can’t win ’em all haha. I think that Yung Lean track ‘Kyoto’ is a wave beat?

Any news year’s resolutions for 2023?

Cook new things, write new things, get a fake body.

Do you have any final words for fans?

Don’t ask for guest list unless the show is already sold out, support the underground, if you want your local scene to prosper…buy a ticket <3

Also – Come see me in Miami Dec 8th and Okeechobee March 4th…maybe some other dates in between, we’ll see what happens.

Also also – stay sexy.
