2022 has been yet another impressive year for So Sus. The Vancouver-based producer released the incredible single ‘Derealization’ on our label, played his Toronto debut at Deadbeats, killed it at Shambhala, and so much more. Capping off things with a bang comes his Melancholia EP on Circus Electric. The project showcases his artistic evolution, finding the perfect development of his signature sound.
Over the course of four tracks, the producer gives listeners a piece of his heart. It’s an emotionally moving epic that doesn’t lack the punch we’ve come to expect from So Sus. ‘Don’t Forget Me’ alongside Sejo sets the tone for the project opening with a hauntingly beautiful aesthetic that is carried through. It feels like memories slowly drifting from the unconscious mind into the forefront before enveloping into a tidal wave of emotion. On ‘Puppet’ TetraTara’s dark vocals create an alluring but unsettling aura that is matched by the track’s powerful backing. The vocalist returns once again on ‘Attachment Theory’ showcasing the pair’s chemistry and balancing against the more triumphant drops. Saving the best for last comes ‘Truth & Deception.’ Serving as the grande finale, it exhibits the same sonic palette as the rest of Melancholia while feeling more commanding. It’s gloomy, menacing, and draped in mystique. Yet it still embodies an air of beauty.
So Sus’ ‘Melancholia’ mixes wave, trap, and bass for an intoxicating journey that deserves repeat listens. Dive in below.
