It’s been nearly a decade since Bro Safari & UFO! dropped their iconic Animal LP. The project helped redefine the sound of electronic trap music. With Clockwork they expanded their experimentation delivering a sci-fi epic. After taking some time off, the duo are back with a new EP and collaborative project: ET FINGER. The self-titled project serves as their first body of work under the new moniker. Over the course of 4 tracks, the pair takes listeners on a wild sonic journey that spans a myriad of genres, sounds, and directions.
‘XPER’ serves as the project’s opener. The first few seconds feel like an alien transmission being carefully tuned to the right frequency for human consumption. Breakbeats clash with psychedelic riffs and strange switch-ups for a track that is fully aware of weirdness and doubles down. ‘Flop’ flirts with the idea of being a trap banger while remaining refreshingly off-kilter. It’s mean, brutish, and even mangled at times. What more could you want? Pivoting direction with a sense of finesse comes ‘Skatepark.’ It’s a work of beauty pairing a sense of nostalgia with space travel samples and evolving drum patterns that never stagnate. Just when you feel the ride can’t get any wilder, ‘Ease Up’ closes things off on another level. The first half is deceivingly laidback before entering a rave-ready back half that gets proceedingly filthier. Caution that the final drop might knock you over.
