Guest Mix + Interview – Sundog

by Colin

British Columbia-based Sundog is the next bass artist you need on your radar. After landing in our latest edition of Focus Five just a few weeks ago, I was so impressed with his sound that I had to invite him on FUXWITHIT for a Guest Mix + Interview. For those unfamiliar, Sundog blurs the boundaries between minimal trap beats and more experimental organic grooves, occupying a sonic space that’s born out of OG trap but has evolved with an otherworldly aesthetic. His two-track EP Whirlwind/Thunder amazed me, he’s hot off a performance at the iconic Shambhala music festival, and is gearing up to drop an EP next month. If you’ve been sleeping on Sundog, this is your sign to wake up.

Spanning 50 tracks and nearly an hour and a half, this mix is an absolute must-listen. Jam-packed with a ton of Sundog’s originals (including several IDs), plus music from FUXWITHIT favorites like Mr. Carmack, Jon Casey, dope, thook, dope, Oakk, TroyBoi, UZ, episcool, Goldenchild, Lasse, and more. If you’ve never heard of Sundog, I promise you’ll be a fan after listening, if you’re already a fan then you know what it is. Press play and vibe out.

Tell us about the mix. Where are you taking us with this one?

With this mix I wanted to showcase my versatility as an artist, sharing the heavier, grittier side of my taste in music. It includes some of my favourite tracks from a few years back as well as some brand new and unreleased beats from myself and friends. Honestly, a lot of time was spent crafting this mix and it’s one of my favourites I’ve recorded. Expect lots of large 808’s.

How’s BC treating you? What do enjoy most about it?

I love it here, I’ve only lived on the coast for 3 years but I feel like it’s the best place in Canada to be. It’s hard to pick what my favourite part about it is, but living next to the ocean is pretty hard to beat.

What makes the Island special?

The island is just straight-up magic, the nature is immaculate and the music scene here is alive and abundant.

The feeling I get from making beats and just creating is like nothing else I’ve experienced. I’m obsessed with it.

What drives you to make music?

The feeling I get from making beats and just creating is like nothing else I’ve experienced. I’m obsessed with it. I spend a lot of my free time in my little bedroom studio working on tunes. I really think the books “The War of Art” and “Turning Pro” by Steven Pressfield instilled this drive in me to create like my life depended on it. That the world is a better place because of great art.

Your music possesses a rich organic feel. How do you deliver that feeling sonically?

I’ve been really inspired from music I experienced at Envision Festival in Costa Rica, and especially The Grove stage at Shambhala here in Canada. The Grove changed my entire outlook on what is possible with music. I take in a lot of inspiration from my environment and do my best to distill it down to its own unique flavour.

Less live instruments, more sample-heavy, big 808’s a few dog bark sounds, kinda like you’re walking around a janky junkyard ya know?

You’ve got an EP dropping soon. What can you tell us about it?

Yeah! I’m really stoked to drop this, I’m calling it the Junkyard EP and it’s got a wonky, janky feel to it. With this EP I’m doing something a little different than my past releases. Less live instruments, more sample-heavy, big 808’s a few dog bark sounds, kinda like you’re walking around a janky junkyard ya know? Gunna be out in October!

What made your recent performance at Shambhala so memorable?

Definitely my favourite set to date. I was surrounded by so many friends. All the homies in the booth behind me, it really felt like a Boiler Room/Keep Hush vibe. The place was packed and the crowd was so receptive. It was a real dream come true.

What are your top 5 favorite trap songs of all time?

Top 5 is hard to pick but I’ll go with some classics:
1: Keys n Krates – Hypnotik
2: Sam Gallantry- Long Distance
3: Mr. Carmack – Move like lions do
4: Krane – Propane
5: Losco – Charge

How do enjoy spending your time when you’re not working on music?

I hermit pretty hard when I’m not at work, most of my free time is spent just making beats honestly lol. But I do really enjoy spending time with people I love. Skateboarding is forever my go-to for fun. I really want to surf more this winter too.

I can’t put it into words all I can say is it’s a masterpiece and everyone should read it.

What’s the last piece of art that really amazed you?

Rick Rubins’s book ‘The Creative Act.’ I can’t put it into words all I can say is it’s a masterpiece and everyone should read it.

Any final words for fans?

Just want to say thank you for the continued support. I’m in this for the long haul and all the love and support means the world to me. A huge thanks to FUXWITHIT for the platform to share on!
