Guest Mix + Interview – Magic Flowers

by Braden Green

In 2013, I had the pleasure of discovering Soulection. This label was and still is an absolute titan of the SoundCloud music scene, pushing forward-thinking and soulful house music for well over a decade now. I can’t count how many artists I’ve discovered thanks to their expert curation, but I’d like to introduce one of my favorites here. I heard the track ‘Magic Drum Machine‘ for the first time after six years of listening to Soulection’s weekly radio show. The sheer groove of the drums with the lyrics of Bell Biv DeVoe’s ‘Poison‘ overlaid had me thinking it must be some new artist I hadn’t heard of from LA, or Chicago, or maybe Detroit. I couldn’t have been further off (literally). Across the pond in a sunny corner of Eastern Europe, the duo Magic Flowers has entered the chat.

Since the fateful day I heard that track for the first time, Magic Flowers hasn’t skipped a beat. I’ve been a raving fan of nearly every one of their releases, ranging from eclectic house beats to ratchet trap edits and everything in between. I couldn’t be more happy to share them with you today. I hope you’re ready to catch a vibe, because these boys came proper!

We’re excited to hear this mix you’ve put together! Can you give us an idea of what our listeners should expect to hear?

With our mix, we want to immerse you in the world of house music. Here, you can hear our releases, unreleased tracks, as well as the tracks we listen to in our headphones or play at parties.

You guys are based in Moldova, correct? I think that’s a pretty unfamiliar corner of the world for a lot of our readers. Can you tell us a bit about what the music scene is like where you live?

Yes, that’s right, we are from Moldova. It’s a small, sunny country neighboring Romania and Ukraine. It’s hard to say that we have a developed music industry, as everything is in the creation stage. Therefore, we strive to introduce people to new music, create parties so that people can discover something new, and in doing so, inspire others, thereby expanding the scene in the country and beyond.

How did you two meet? What led you to making music together as a duo instead of solo projects?

The story of how we met is that the right people introduced and connected us at the right time (Alex was involved in music production, and Vasile performed as a DJ in a creative promo team). After realizing that we shared the same musical tastes, we decided to join forces and show the world Magic Flowers, our vibe, and style!

Your music really transcends a number of genres, fusing elements of trap, house, garage, etc. Could you tell us about some of your musical inspirations and what they mean to you?

You correctly noted that we can’t classify ourselves within a specific genre because we love music deeply (Both Alex and Vasile danced in early childhood). As we grew older, we explored new styles and genres, simultaneously sharing our vision with the world. When we started Magic Flowers, some of our main inspirations were Soulection. We liked and still like every artist released there, and all the music played on their radio show and in their community. We always dreamed that our track would someday be played there. So, when it happened, we realized we were on the right track and that all our ideas were not just fantasies but achievable goals – the main thing is to believe and do what you love.

What is your music-making process like? Do you tend to just experiment in the studio, or do you have concrete ideas that you like to build on when you’re writing a new track?

We don’t think we have a specific process for creating music. Most often, we share different music and samples, then develop an idea around 1-2 samples, turning it into a loop and then into a full track. It can be a remix or an original track; the most important thing is its mood.

Would you say you make music more for yourselves, or for your listeners? Do you ever feel pressured to change a track you’ve written because it might not be what listeners expect?

Honestly, we don’t feel strong pressure from listeners. Of course, we have some mild concerns about our various releases, as today we might release a House track, tomorrow a Jungle track, and the day after, UK Garage. But in each of these tracks, you can hear our signature, our vision, so in each of them, you can hear Magic Flowers. We have developed and continue to develop our sound and style so that people can recognize us. You could say that we want to surprise our listeners and show them something new without just following their lead.

Do you have any big plans in store for the rest of 2024?

Regarding our plans for 2024, we would like to travel more and perform outside our country, sharing our vibe worldwide. Right now, we are focused on working so that by autumn we can travel more. This summer, we will perform at the cool and large Electric Castle festival in Romania, which is also very important for us as we will be playing for an audience that knows little about us. Therefore, we want to give them a pleasant surprise so they continue this journey with us. Of course, we plan to release many tracks and strive to release music regularly.

Two-part question! What’s your biggest accomplishment in your eyes, and conversely, what’s a goal you’ve always wanted to achieve but haven’t yet?

As we mentioned earlier, some of our inspirations were and remain artists from the Soulection community. For us, the most gratifying thing was that our tracks started appearing there, which was a major boost for us as artists, giving us the strength and motivation to keep working. Another goal for us is to perform at Boiler Room, to showcase our taste and vibe, and introduce people to new music!

Who are some artists on your radar right now that our readers might not know about?

We definitely recommend you listen to such up-and-coming producers and DJs as GEE LEE (we played our new unreleased track with him in this mix), Jack Marlow, and Tui.

Do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring producers?

The most important thing is to do what you love, whether it’s dancing, music, graffiti, skateboarding, or anything else. The main thing is to enjoy it, as any activity you love will always grow. Especially to musicians, DJs, producers, and artists, we want to say to always follow the path you have chosen and believe in it because everything will work out if you believe in what you do and love your craft. It may sound cliché, but we believe in and love what we do and want to pass on this vibe.
