BCee Reveals New Single ‘Lies’ with Lauren Archer

by Braden Green

If you happened to catch our recent interview with the UK drum and bass pioneer, BCee, you’d know that he has an album dropping this October. Following the release of last month’s single ‘Gamble‘ on his label, Spearhead Records, this soulful producer has once again struck gold with ‘Lies,’ featuring songwriter and vocalist Lauren Archer. As of now, three of the thirteen total vocalists off the new album have been revealed and it’s shaping up to be quite the emotional rollercoaster.

When my world was flooding, you were burning bridges. There’s no smoke without a fire.

‘Lies’ is a heavy and heartfelt track exploring the duality of trust and deceit, love and betrayal. Melancholic piano riffs underscore Lauren’s gossamer voice to create an absolutely dreamy track here. There is an unmistakable warmth to Lauren’s tone that rings of heartache, disillusionment, regret, and most importantly, love. This is the kind of song that forces a moment of introspection when you hear it. Some might call it a vibe-killer, I call it a vibe-setter. It’s strange that when I listen to this song, I’m instantly transported back to the 2000s and early 2010s when this kind of liquid drum and bass was really making waves in the States. It’s emotional, it’s saddening, it’s straight-up pretty… and still the drum breaks have me bouncing my leg like an excited puppy. The nuance in the production does not go unnoticed.

In our interview, BCee expressed a real desire to make timeless sounds, and the kind of song that throws your mental fifteen years into the past like this is exactly what I like to think he was referencing. Picking Lauren’s voice for ‘Lies’ was an immaculate choice. She really nails what made the 2000s era of liquid drum and bass so special: emotion. As much as we all love a good track with crazy sound design, sometimes you just need to feel something, you know?

Hopefully, we can look forward to a few more single releases before the entirety of These Are the Days drops this October. That said, BCee has also been quite busy in his spare time. Another relevant tidbit from our earlier interview involves the Green & Glory Garden, a community garden started by him and his wife which aims to provide horticultural therapy to special needs students, underprivileged youth, refugees, and anyone else who needs support to improve confidence and self-esteem. You can learn more about the project and donate here. While you’re at it, you can pre-save his upcoming album here.

Much love to BCee. You’re a real one, keep the gems coming.
