A handful of names have become a main staple of the sounds we push at FUXWITHIT, and the Argentinian beat-slinger Dabow is on that shortlist. It seems like yesterday, but Dabow’s Guest Mix for us was four years ago, and the young legend has been at for almost a decade now and has compiled a catalog with a tremendous diversity of sound, while also maintaining a level of familiarity that keeps us all crawling back for more. So when we were given the opportunity to showcase a Dabow remix of one of our favorite up-and-coming singer-songwriters Devyn Moon, we had to do it.

If you’re not familiar with Devyn Moon, change that. Over the past few years, the young songsmith has become known for her eclectic and well-refined melodies. Devyn Moon has struck a particular balance between pop and dance that has led to broad appeal, but her sound is primed and ready for the injection of a little bit of that Dabow magic. That’s just what we’re blessed with Dabow’s remix of ‘Remedy’.

We begin with the familiar vocals of Devyn Moon, which is slowly joined by a classic arpeggiating lead from Dabow before being thrown into a four-on-the-floor drop led by a stary nostalgic lead synth. Soon after we’re led through a bridge with a pounding kick drum that slowly builds the tension before dropping back into a head-bopping halftime with brand-new micro-melodies peeping in and out of the mix. Saying this is a must-listen is a massive understatement, stream Dabow’s Remix of Devyn Moon’s ‘Remedy’ down below.

If you’re looking for the best under-the-radar talents, you’ve come to the right place. As always Focus Five highlights five of our team’s favourite finds. This month we’ve got some dark 140, garage, grime, bass, introspective burners, wave, and more. Dive in below.

Distinct Motive

Continuing to show support for the resurgence of the deep dub/140 sound, it would be criminal to not mention Ontario’s very own, Distinct Motive. The name might ring some bells if you’ve been following Deep, Dark, & Dangerous over the last half-decade, but that’s just scratching the surface of this project. His recent two-track EP on Bandcamp, Number 5, captures everything we love about 140 and Distinct Motive. From tasteful sampling, crisp sound design, and inventive songwriting, this recent release is a guaranteed welcomed addition to anyone’s library.

Beyond recent releases, Distinct Motive is someone you do NOT want to miss if he’s rolling through your corner of the world. Usually always accompanied by an equally talented lineup, Distinct Motive has recently been part of Deep, Dark, & Dangerous’s Atlanta takeover with names like Truth and Pushloop. It seems like only the beginning for the man in question, but in truth, the Distinct Motive project’s current position is a product of 10 years of sticking to your guns and pushing sounds that are important to you. Eventually, people will listen.

DJ Jackum

Tracing information about DJ Jackum was not exactly a friendly task, but in the end, it was time well spent. Given the total lack of links on his SoundCloud and Spotify profiles, I feel obliged to thank The 3000 Network’s team for putting me on the right track with this article. Based in West Yorkshire, DJ Jackum is a self-described “party garage” producer (a tag I love) whom I discovered in late 2022 through his eponymous EP Party Garage, released by the prolific GS Dubs imprint. The festive and dancing soul of the EP, a quirk it has in common with pretty much all his releases, quickly turned it into one of my favorite UKG projects in a while. Bootleg or originals makes no difference, so far there has been no room for slow dances in Jackum’s discography. Every track is a showcase of pure funk goodness, a heap of bumpy basslines, pushing grooves, and clever samples. ‘Party Garage Disco Anthem’ and ‘Proper Knees Up’ are my recommendations to get familiar with Dj Jackum, but if you’re looking to pimp your blowout playlists or DJ USBs, there’s much more to discover. Also, be sure to stop by his Instagram profile where he’s all but elusive and enigmatic.

Kinoteki first landed on my radar at the start of the year when I randomly stumbled upon his incredible Dawn of the Final Hour album, released via Tabula Rasa Records. Spanning eleven tracks and almost 55 minutes, the album was one of the most captivating start-to-finish listening experiences that I had experienced in a long time. Take ‘Third Strike’ for example, which itself runs well over six minutes, building slowly and weaving through complex soundscapes in a way that hooks your attention for its entirety. I have since explored much of Kinoteki’s discography (highly recommend Silence Kills with Kelbin) and have never been disappointed. The New York-based artist has a mere 850 followers on SoundCloud at the time of writing, but don’t let these numbers fool you – he’s the real deal. Kinoteki doesn’t only make long, introspective burners, either. You can tell the artist is having fun with his art through light-hearted bootlegs of tracks such as ‘Rumble’ and more recently, ‘U Just R.’ Kinoteki is one to watch. Don’t sleep.

RWB

With UK sounds taking over in North America (see 140 and garage) it’s only right that we highlight one of the UK’s nastiest bass producers out: RWB. The multi-genre producer embodies an array of sounds that have become synonymous with the UK ranging from grime to garage, 140, drum & bass, and beyond. His SoundCloud is a goldmine of masterful dark bass music released in just over a year. A number of killer grime flips caught my original attention with ‘Donny Don Flip,’ ‘Ice Rink,’ and ‘Man I Wear’ all ringing off. In the mood for some moody DnB? ‘Lost Intamacy’ is a sultry and shadowy romp that will have you thirsting for more. Bending Drill and 140 together his most recent release ‘Frozen Time’ is a pensive and ice-cold banger. If you want that raw, gritty UK shit, RWB is the plug.

With the wave scene continuing to grow every day, artists such as SAGE are pushing the environment forward in the best direction. Putting in major work each day to bring listeners unexplainable journeys to the future. His discography of work contains some of the most powerful and eclectic wave pieces to date. From gorgeous hardwave compositions to some wild phonk with a ton of attitude throughout, he’s truly showcasing his versatile production skills through each release.

One of his most recent singles, ‘Arcane’ is a massive collaboration with Aekae. Bringing in what makes this style truly remarkable and enticing. Time-shattering drums, euphoric melodies throughout, and a vision for the future, this is easily one of his best releases to date. Both styles intertwining with one another is simply astounding and jaw-dropping. The atmosphere will just take your breath away.

His newest release, ‘Delirious’ contains a dark and sinister force within. Perfect for those late-night drives no matter what environment you’re in. The vocal he uses works perfectly with his production. Carrying your attention every second with its chill and vibrant personality. Completely immersing the listener! And not to mention a complete switch-up in rhythm at the end. Creating a whole new emotion to add a whole other layer to the overall piece. So make sure to keep an eye on him. We’re excited to hear more from him!
This month we are highlighting a Brazilian Baile breakout, a melodic mastermind, a gritty deep dubstep standout, a funkified glitch producer, and a stellar future beat creator who we hope is back for good. Get familiar with all five below.

KARAN!

With all the buzz surrounding Baile Funk at the moment, I don’t think you’ll be surprised to learn that this month I’m taking you to Brazil. As we see more and more producers getting their hands dirty with the sound, I believe it’s important to become familiar with those who have lived and breathed this culture all of their lives. Having run into KARAN! twice in the last few weeks, I took it as a sign that he could be the ideal starting point. I came across this 17-year-old producer first through his edit of ‘Get Low‘ (while curating the latest volume of Bootleg Business) and then following the hype sprung around his ‘XENA’ flip (played by the Pangbourne Mafia at their Coachella set and by Skrillex at Red Rocks). Two perfect assists. From dunk to Favela bass, from drum & bass to hybrid heavy hitters, KARAN!’s discography is a fun-filled babel. As he says himself, he “gosta de misturar muito do Heavy Bass com a cultura brasileira em suas músicas para representar seu país,” translated, he “likes to mix heavy bass with Brazilian culture in his songs to represent his country”. If you are here for the culture and not just for the clout, get comfy because you are in for a treat.

‘kyōshin’ released not too long ago shows the artist’s pure talents under a bright spotlight. His careful attention to detail really makes this tune pop from beginning to end.
We’ve seen the resurgence of 140/deep dubstep happen in front of our eyes over the past few years, and it would be criminal not to mention Leo Cap at this point. Hailing from Russia, Leo Cap has become a true culture pusher over the years. First releasing all types of drum and bass from jungle to neurofunk under his alias Black Barrel, the Russian native then unleashed his 140 sound with the Leo Cap project only four years ago. Since then his sound has become one of the most sought-after in the whole genre. Recent releases like ‘Free Your Mind’ really showcases what Leo Cap and 140 is all about, with a heavy focus on percussion groove, creative sampling, and wicked sound design all lending a hand in making Leo Cap an artist we just have to watch.

Beyond the music, if you’re reading this as a producer or a DJ, subscribing to Leo Cap on Patreon is a must. With Leo Cap’s dollar dub package, you get multiple Patreon exclusive tracks every month for only a dollar. After reading this make sure to check out his recent mix for Deep, Dark, & Dangerous.

Ooga

I don’t quite remember how I got to following Ooga on SoundCloud and on Twitter, but boy am I glad I did. Boasting a sound that, as he describes, “fuses funky rhythms and soul-satisfying instrumentation,” Ooga’s brief yet impressive discography makes him an artist that I am excited to continue following. Since his earliest works, such as his remix for Mirror Maze’s ‘Isekai,’ the Bay Area-based producer has shown a knack for groovy riffs and catchy bass, giving hints of the early works of Koan Sound and Culprate. More recently, Ooga shared his debut What Make It Work EP, where each track further displays his keen attention to detail in balancing funk and electronic music. A personal favourite from the collection is ‘Rawthentic,’ as the artist dives deep into neuro vibes without omitting a natural musicality. Be sure to keep an eye out for Ooga.

orange tales.

Illusive and relatively unknown, Los Angeles-based orange tales is one of the few artists in recent times to convert me to fandom off a single track. The melting colors in the artwork and the fact that it lives on the always impressive Destinuna made ‘like that’ an instant play. Utilizing familiar grime vocals, an effortlessly smooth bounce, and euphoric textures makes the cut feel like an elevated day party amongst the clouds. It’s beautiful, banging, and addictive. What more could you want? A deeper dive into the artist’s back catalog shows a major gap in release spanning back almost 4 years. Don’t let the time off discourage you, the Bloom Child released ‘Dream Bells’ is a summer-ready bop ripe for the picking. Melodic and fun-filled, the track plays like a summer daydream, where life is just too easy. If you’re looking to truly drift away ‘calm skies’ plays out like a melancholy lullaby. With a strong back catalog and a stellar release marking their return, we’re hoping orange tales is back for good.

You know you’re in for a journey when you hear the name M?STIC and trap uttered in the same breath. Whether it’s his recent speaker-rattling collaboration with MERCI MARINE, or his unforgettable guest mix with us, M?STIC has become a certified FUXWITHIT favorite. Keeping the ball rolling comes M?STIC’s next EP “FELONIOUS”, and we’re honored to feature the title track from the project.

M?STIC gives us a little insight into the process behind this banger, “I wanted to make some deep trap, you feel me? Something that separated my style from others and cemented what I’m bringing to the game. The way life was on my come-up and the things I saw is the reason why I go so hard with what I do. The inspiration behind this one is I’m simply tryna make it and level up. During the writing process, I first took the original synth from one of my most poppin’ songs, “MKULTRA”, geek’d it up a bit, and BOOM, made FELONIOUS. Shout to STUNNA POSSE AND BADMOUTH AS WELL AS EVERYONE GETTING IT OUT OF THE MUD. WE VIRAL.”

The ‘M?STIC Sound’ has perfectly married the percussive sounds and energy of 2000s Trap Music, with in-your-face aggressive and refined sound design. While ‘FELONIOUS’ falls within this description, this track comes into it’s own with it’s boom-bap style percussive flow. Combined with a deadly sustained lead that has more movement F1 car on track. With all these elements working in unison, you’re left with a festival-ready deep trap banger.

Stream M?STIC’s ‘FELONIOUS’ everywhere now!

JAWN’s new single ‘Body Breaker‘ has finally hit streaming platforms and we couldn’t be more excited. Few names have consistently stayed at the top of their game throughout the years as JAWNS has. Through so many trends and shifts in the overall landscape of bass music, JAWNS has stayed true to a truly unique sound and direction with his project. The seasoned veteran has become a staple on RL Grime’s Sable Valley and has in turn carved his own lane within the bass music scene. With influences ranging from DnB, acid house, trap, and more, every JAWNS record always presents us with something fresh and exciting. This new single is out now on Deadbeats and is just a taste of new music we can expect from him.

Right out the gate, ‘Body Breaker’ sets the tone with a menacing underlying synth that carries the ghostly vocals throughout the intro. Soon after, we’re met with the addition of break-influenced percussion before the lead synth suddenly appears and immediately seizes the record. After a quick build up the lead synth is soon transformed into what only be described as a frightening melody paired with a devastating half-time percussion pattern. ‘Body Breaker’ seems to be more of the same from the artist. Do yourself a favor and stream it below.

In this fast-paced world we live in, it’s important to remember to slow down and take a quick breath, and that’s just what Maryland native Ayotemi’s ‘peon’ reminds us to do. Although hailing from Maryland, the young talent’s Nigerian roots shine through and provide the foundation for his soulful take on hip-hop with influences ranging from Afro-Beat to R&B. Beyond coming with a truly unique take on hip-hop, Ayotemi has worked with FUX favorite Foolie $urfin with their record ‘New Jam’ and we’re excited to see them collaborate again on this track as well as the upcoming Indigo Rap album. Taking all of this into account, you know we had to walk you through Ayotemi’s latest, ‘peon,’ which is out now via Good Society.

Stay Grounded, Stay Golden. Mountains and rivers will move over you.

AYOTEMI, ‘PEON’

Right out the gate, we’re met with this wavy synth that we ride throughout the intro before the voice of Ayotemi finally peaks through the mix. The opening seconds of the first verse are a perfect example of Ayotemi’s versatility. An off-kilter flow that perfectly fills the spaces between the ever-increasing percussion elements perfectly is soon interrupted by a switch-up that offers a smoother ride along with the beat as its drops. Effortlessly switching from singing to falsetto and back to rapping is something to marvel at, and ‘peon’ has plenty of that lying within. Check out the whole thing down below!

Over the past two years, one of our favorite trends in dance music is the reemergence of Drum & Bass in North America. Although if you’ve been paying attention, you definitely already know we’re massive DnB fans. One of our favorite artists we’ve supported throughout this time is the bay-are duo Slang Dogs. With a truly unique sound that perfectly walks the line between left-field bass music and Drum & Bass, with each release tending to lean one way or the other. Since the duo’s inception, they’ve released one of the biggest labels in bass music, Bassrush. If Slang Dogs’ recent release ‘Ephinany’ is any foreshadowing, you better get familiar with the name, cause they’re here to stay.

As with any Slang Dogs masterpiece, the atmosphere and tone are set right out of the gate with these eerie ambient synths joined by the calls of what sounds like distant animals. Soon after the lead is teased right before being throw into a quick build. Immediately following this we’re thrown into the beautiful chaos of the drop section, spearheaded by a lead that can truly only be described as an alien growl. The percussion elements through the record are perfectly varied, while also being accompanied by some interesting sounds that’ll pierce your ears in the breaks. Do yourself a favor, and listen to the whole thing down below.

When we take a look back at the last few years of trap music, we honestly couldn’t be happier. We’ve seen the creation of flagship labels for the genre like Sable Valley and Quality Goods. Beyond this, we’ve seen a new generation of young talent begin to push the genre into new grounds. We can’t talk about this group without including the young Long Beach legend RemK in the same sentence. Over the past few years, we’ve seen RemK finally garner the support he deserves, and more recently we got to see him crush it on Boombox Cartel’s Cinco Mode Livestream. This seems to be only the beginning for this young legend, as we have the pleasure of presenting to you one of his most anticipated records, ‘High Tide’.

We begin our journey as the melody creeps in before being joined by these hypnotic lead vocals and some sick jungle-flows on percussion. Soon after, we’re hit with a quick build-up before being launched into an 808-heavy and horn ladened drop section, with a snare that seems to jump out of the mix and flick you in the ear. After another quick build, we’re met with a more industrial sound in the second drop, with these bouncy metallic synths taking the lead. It goes without saying ‘High Tide’ will surely be tearing up some festival stages sooner than later.

We caught up with the rising star for a brief interview to learn more about the track, inspiration from friends, and his evolution.

First off, tell us a little about the track. How did ‘High Tide’ come to be?

I made the first version of this song back in October 2020. It actually started with the 2nd drop as the main drop and had a way different intro. When trying to make another drop for the demo, I ended up writing the brass horn lead line and instantly knew I wanted to base the whole song around that. After that, I ended up writing a new intro with the goal of creating something nostalgic and upbeat while still being able to transition into the brass-driven drop. The vocal chops were a last-minute addition during the writing process and it definitely glued the whole track together for me.

As soon as I heard this track on your detour mix (which was phenomenal) I knew this was gonna be a weapon. We saw some familiar faces in that car with you. How much do these people inspire you when making music?

Those guys are all my best friends and we all share the same passion for being creative and making music. I feel like we all just inspire each other and push each other to make the best music and content that we can. I’ve definitely learned a lot from each and every one of my friends and I’m really lucky to have those guys around!

When I think of your sound, it never fails to give me that nostalgic golden era feeling while at the same time never feeling dated. Tell us a little bit about how your sound has evolved throughout time and what direction you see it heading.

The past two years were definitely the turning point for my sound. I’ve been producing ever since I was like 10 but I definitely made the most progress over these past few years. I spent a lot of time experimenting trying to make a sound that’s unique to myself while still taking influences from artists that I look up to. I’ve always loved EDM and trap since the golden era and grew up listening to all of those artists which definitely helped shape my sound. My main goal when writing music is to create something that provokes emotion while still being catchy and danceable. I really want to keep pushing myself to make something new every time I write a song and hope to keep doing that with every release. It’s hard to say where I see my sound heading right now as I’m really trying to experiment with everything while still keeping my own touch on things so people know they are listening to a RemK song. I have a ton of songs that I can’t wait to release and I’m really looking forward to what the future has in store!

Listen to ‘High Tide’ below and grab the free download.

When we think of brands that have become pivotal within the culture of dance music, we have to mention Space Yacht. Originally beginning as an event company out of LA, Space Yacht has become so much more than that. In recent years we’ve seen one of the most recognized brands in dance music launch their brand new record label, Space Yacht Records, and were one of the first to get involved in the ever-growing NFT space. Beginning with CLB & Formula’s ‘Moving Forward’ nearly a year ago, the label’s momentum has shown no sign of slowing. Boasting a discography from experimental bass to tech house, it’s been a pleasure seeing an event company this big stay true to their event lineups with their label and deliver releases in many different areas of dance music. With this in mind, it’s time we take a deep dive into Space Yacht’s brand new compilation Big Bass Ting Vol.1.

Meant to showcase the heavier side of Space Yacht, Big Bass Ting Vol.1 has a tracklist stacked full of names we’re already familiar with like NAZAAR, Blurrd Vzn, and Blankface. Along with these familiar names we’re introduced to plenty of up-and-coming talent from the underground. From hybrid trap to dubstep, to experimental, Big Bass Ting Vol. 1 truly has something that every basshead can enjoy. This compilation already has us looking forward to Big Bass Ting Vol. 2.
