Following Pocket‘s meteoric rise through the electronic music scene has been nothing short of an incredible journey. At the turn of the calendar year, we covered ‘Wishing You Well‘ and listed a few of the milestones that the talented artist had achieved in the first year of his project. And, in just the last six months, that list has grown even longer. From an official remix for Charli XCX to opening for Porter Robinson and Fred again.., Pocket is riding a wave of momentum that appears to be unstoppable.

Following the release of ‘Heartbreak Engineering‘ that was first teased in his guest mix for us late last year, the creative now returns with a new single titled ‘Wax’ via Signal >> Supply, an Atlantic Records UK imprint. A common theme in Pocket’s tunes is that one can expect a certain level of groove and rhythm, and the artist always manages to add a certain flair to his tracks to keep them unique. Scoped within that signature sound yet sprinkled with his Midas touch once more, ‘Wax’ is more quintessential Pocket, with minimal garage percussion luring you in before layers of synths, vocals and effects take center-stage. Not too drastic between its highs and its lows yet never growing monotonous as a result of its gradual variability, ‘Wax’ is a tune tailored for summer listening. Don’t miss it below.

Versatile DJ/Producer ALRT has made a strong impression with ‘Poppin’, the latest release on his imprint, NRG records. The track is in fact teeming with energy, a tantalizing tribute to jersey club bounce that also hints at trap and dubstep elements throughout.

The track starts off with a calm synth and delicate woodwind sounds, which are quickly upended by a hard trap beat that pulls the listener in. The song then builds, and vocals that repeat the phrase “Poppin It” slowly edges into the forefront of the song, ushering in a drop that is tinged with 90’s nostalgia and youthful energy, a climax of rhythm that feels endless.

ALRT also cites that most of his inspiration “lies within the ’90s core culture” of the electronic dance music scene. This latest release seems evident of that, with synths that feel reminiscent of squelchy sounds of old synthesizers, and a white noise house beat at the beginning of the second drop.

The song continues to build on this energy, with sleek vocal chops atop crisp, biting snares that command attention. The energy seemingly feels endless, with even the brief repose in between drops carrying immense weight and anticipation. Finally, at the final drop and climax, the song ends on a singular, lofty, flute sound. This is an introspective and reflective end to the nostalgic rampage of the rest of the track. Listeners are sure to be left with this calm, an adventure well explored, and excitement about what’s coming next. With an already storied career, it seems that ALRT only continues to impress with his craft and inventive production, and whatever is “coming next” is sure to be more than memorable

House duo Coco & Breezy return with soulful force on their shimmering new single, ‘Liftin Me Up.’ The twins are no strangers to filling a dance floor, as evidenced by their well-loved discography and fast-growing fan base. ‘Liftin Me Up,’ however, serves as a spiritual affirmation. It’s an ambrosial track that is a testament to female power, community, and family.

The release is in conjunction with Femme House x Insomniac, an 11-track package built around some of the most prolific female-identifying producers in the current house music scene. The compilation is also the first-of-its-kind for Insomniac and house music at large.

Indeed, the skill of these two DJs is steadfast. Grooving basslines flow into one another, accompanied by well-placed vocal chops and melodic moments. Eccentric ancillary percussion is peppered in between. The production covers a wide palette of sounds, melding R&B and house music into a work that uplifts the listener while simultaneously encouraging deep reflection. In the span of a few short years, the duo has developed an enthralling signature style that has enlivened the dance scene.

Coco & Breezy also speak to a desire to foster community in their music. “Progress isn’t passive and it doesn’t happen alone.” They add, “We are constantly setting intentions, reflecting, and affirming one another to help our whole tribe grow & prosper. We need to lift each other up – through words, through actions, and through music. That’s why Femme House was a perfect partner for us with this song.”

The track closes with an intimate recording of the twin sisters with their mother, in which they reflect on “something [that] might come your way that you think is negative.” At that moment, one of them reconsiders. “[I say] hold on. Let me think about this blessing I got…Everything is carved out in our lives for a reason… it’s divine order.” In this moment, the listener, who had been surrounded by chants of “you’re lifting me up so let me hold you down”, grasps the necessity of support and perspective in the face of adversity, and the necessity of providing that support for others.

“No one has lifted us up more than our parents, so when our Mom needed some support recently, we had to make sure we held her down like she’s always done for us,” the duo later added. This bubbling track thus ends in a reflective repose. Work that is both a party and at peace. Listen to ‘Liftin Me Up’ now and find it on your preferred streaming service here.

Gaszia‘s power is unlike any other. His creations have not only shaped a beautiful road to success but have also pushed electronic music in the right direction. Molding god-tier melodies together with futuristic arrangements while paying homage to genres that have paved the way for dance music shines a bright light on his contribution to the industry and impresses listeners and peers everywhere. His workflow compliments every aspect of his own being: Passion, determination, and adoration for the arts.

As for Sooski, her everlasting vocals mixed with soothing production skills completely heighten her overall vision to the next level. From a deep love for synthesizers to creating timeless lyrics, her talents and striving for riches are truly inspiring. And you can easily hear the passion run through your own hearts from her personal work. She’s also worked with artists such as ASTRØWILK and Voyager, giving their tracks the gifts of elegance and priceless tones. And the fact Gaszia and her teamed up is nothing but exhilarating, resulting in a special and spine-chilling creation.

This song celebrates women’s power in relationships. The words are merely having fun with the concept of a woman’s ability to exert influence, reminding men that although she can be the “dream girl” or the “good wife”, she will not change herself for any man as she is real and untamed, nor will she dim her light in order for men to feel better about themselves. This character oozes confidence and grace. She warns men in a sassy way, not to feel irreplaceable, as she believes that it’s her bliss, brains and elegance which makes her relationships special. And she can recreate something just as special with the next man, because she’s the one holding the key to desire, passion and romance! She is everything a man can dream of, but do not test her!Sooski

‘Bite’ is a cyber-infused masterpiece that makes you fall into a vast space of dreams and gentle frequencies and showcases how powerful their teamwork is. Right in the beginning, we hear both of their styles take the spotlight. Gaszia’s cinematic environment compliments Sooski’s vocals incredibly, immediately hitting your brainwaves in a nurturing fashion, preparing you for what’s to come.

Not to mention how powerful the lyrics are. They wrap around you like a silk scarf of protection. And as the track builds and builds, you’re preparing for greatness to unfold in a way you’ve never experienced. The first chorus is a fast-paced and hard-hitting blast of energy. The airy lead working with well-crafted drums grips your attention to the fullest. And chopping up her vocals was a genius way to add even more flavor to this endless dish.

After, they introduce a breakdown carrying a similar state of airiness and hypnotic emotions throughout. As if you were falling deeper and deeper into their spell. The garage-style beat pattern really helps the track flow in an organic way, carrying us to the grand finale. And once the final drop introduces itself, you’ll be swept off your feet with grace. The impactful drums working hand in hand with a stunning melodic lead completely take you off guard, making you become fully in line with their creative abilities. Creating an overall journey you’ll remember for a lifetime. Bravo to both of them.

I think when you collab it’s really hard to mesh with the other artist sometimes in terms of meshing sounds/ideas. With Sooski we’ve been chatting for some time now and really getting in sync with each other and I think being on that same page can really help the process come together well. This is the first of our collaborations and I’m excited to see how the process develops in future ones Gaszia

I’ve been working with Gaszia on some tracks here and there for some time, since the beginning of the pandemic actually. I wrote and produced the original version of “Bite” and Gaszia kindly agreed to do a remix. When I heard it I was blown away, it sounded so different to the original and definitely more aligned with our upcoming projects. So it made sense to drop it as a single, as it’s a hint of what’s to come! Sooski

Make sure to go support by streaming ‘Bite’ via KUMO Collective!

At the top of the year, WHIPPED CREAM added to her already explosive career trajectory by announcing she would be performing at Coachella this coming April. The first time I caught her live was in 2018 in Philadelphia’s NYE festival, Hijinx, and since then she’s seriously blown up, securing slots at some of the biggest festival stages including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and EDC.

She says, “I went into making music for the love of music and the hopes to bring a new sound/energy/movement to earth that will inspire the world and change. I wanted to SHARE a body of work to the world that was so out there, showcasing as a politely written love letter XOXO to anyone who has chosen to misunderstand, devalue, or not hear me.” And not only does she inspire women all over the world, but she also utilizes her platform to bring on diverse talent with their own stores to tell. In ‘Hold Up,’ WHIPPED CREAM teams up with Jersey Club queen UNIIQU3, trans icon Big Freedia, and one of the scene’s brightest stars, Moore Kismet.

WHIPPED CREAM continues, “I feel super humbled and honored to have been able to bring such inspiring energetic creative beings onto the record. Big Freedia, Moore Kismet and Uniiqu3. Each message they left on the record, truly made the record the anthem I feel it is. In a world we are told to be ourselves constantly we sure have to fight to do just that.”

‘Hold Up’ is unapologetically in-your-face, which you could also say about each of the artists. Boasting their “black sheep” standing in the world, each artist displays a level of grandiose confidence that exudes through the track. I just couldn’t help but feel good about myself while listening to it! Packed with laser-like synths, dynamic drums, and poignant words about being unabashedly yourself, ‘Hold Up’ is the kick-in-the-ass anthem we needed for those times we could use a boost.

When there’s a win for diversity and inclusion, we all win. And QRTR definitely wins with her sophomore album, infina ad nausea. The producer, née Meagan Rodriguez, is a Latina woman in the LGBTQ+ community and when you listen to this project, you’ll soon find out that her diversified perspective gives her the experience to relate to everyone who gets their ears on this.

The concept of this album feels a little larger than life to me and difficult to describe and that is exactly what I was trying to encompass sonically. I arranged the track order in a way that felt like the act of spiraling internally (mentally and emotionally). It starts off bright and playful and becomes more frenzied until suddenly you’ve reached “the point” – which is ever moving and evolving and thus unreachable.”

QRTR

infina ad nausea investigates different parts of QRTR. It starts with ‘The Outer Edge,’ an otherworldly melodic foreshadowing of what’s to come in the album, that even features her viral producer cat, ambientkitty. Rodriguez then explores her romantic side in the next two songs, ‘With You’ and ‘Want Me 2.’ While the rest of the album is void of too many lyrics, emotion seeps through each track while still managing to stay completely dancefloor-ready.

‘Like That’ is a standout, showing QRTR’s New York City roots in the form of east coast club melodies that blend beautifully with techno rhythms. The album is mostly on the darker side, but it gets a dreamy break in deep house tune, ‘Blame Me.’ The energy picks back up with ‘Ritual’, a dynamic DnB collaboration with another NYC beatsmith, CSLTY, before ending with IDM-influenced ‘Lucid.’

QRTR may be young, but the depth and range she exhibits in infina ad nausea is breathtaking. Not only does the record showcase who she is as a person, but it also shows who she is as a producer, a tastemaker, and a well-rounded artist. With this album, she proves again she’s a force to be reckoned with. Her ability to command a room with her music is inspiring, and I’m so glad she gives more women in music somebody to look up to.

Now that I think about it, I believe this is actually the first time I mention the word techno here on FUXWITHIT. I’m afraid something weird might happen if this article gets published. Will my writer’s account collapse? Will the editor put a bounty on my head? Will the bass gods get angry? Of the three, the last one is actually the one I’m less afraid of because I know I have Voliik and FERA on my side. I’m convinced there are a few bass tracks (here and here some examples) that can withstand the mighty force of ‘Destroy’. A pretty bold title I agree, that however describes with conciseness what the track its all about. Obliteration. Demolition. Wreckage. This article could continue with just a list of synonyms, but I’ll try to do better.

As Voliik himself stated, ‘Destroy’ is the direct sequel of his and FERA’s previous collaboration ‘Omen’ which, in case you missed, I highly suggest you check out as well. “Making music together is so much fun. Once we finished Omen, we immediately started working on ideas for a follow-up. That became DESTROY. We’re so proud of this song”. While ‘Omen’ has a powerful haunting aura that makes it sound like a soundtrack of a big-budget sci-fi horror videogame, with ‘Destroy’ the two producers have taken a more dancefloor-oriented approach. The eighty-second intro is definitely not for the impatient pits, but as my grandma used to say, patience is a virtue and the ravers who can faithfully wait for the drop will be rewarded. In addition, there’re actually many interesting elements to appreciate in this section, including some old-school Deadmau5-style chords that really lit up the atmosphere. The drop is clearly when the magic happens, if by magic you mean a carpet bombing of on-steroids kicks and boisterous synths. It is raw, minimalist, but it has everything it needs to make your inner raver scream with joy. The very best way to describe it was found by a SoundCloud user who perfectly summarized ‘Destroy’ in this comment: “There’s a point where a tune isn’t dirty anymore but just straight filth. Smashed it guys. Love it!”.

Stream ‘Destroy’ below and download it for free here.

There’s not a more compelling story than when Tinaturnup, the supposed 17-year old club prodigy from Denmark was revealed to be the brainchild of DJ Sliink and Nadus, two of the pioneers of Jersey Club. Nadus even expressed that using the Tinaturnup moniker was when he received the most recognition and outreach. This was 7 years ago. We have to do better.

I still never got more music work offers than that two weeks of emails. Everyone wanted to toss us coin and work when they thought two niggas from Newark were a white chick from Denmark. https://t.co/hHapSNNId2

— Nadus (@Nadus) June 3, 2020

While the story came to the forefront again in the peak of the Black Lives Matter movement back in June 2020, the secret had already been out since at least 2016. The two things we can learn from this? 1) Anonymity does work as marketing. And 2) Racism is still rampant in the music industry.

While we’re always working towards a more progressive and inclusive community, we have to acknowledge this as proof: If you’re white in EDM, it’s easier for you to succeed. Honestly, it feels weird that the first time we’re posting about either DJ Sliink and Nadus in years is because of Tinaturnup. But we thought this story was worthwhile sharing.

If i ghost produced for some random dude in EU… yall would flock… we proved it once with Tina Turntup..

On a lighter note, the music “Tinaturnup” made banged. It was hard for me to choose a bootleg for #tbt‘s first edition of the year, but I couldn’t pass on babygirl Aaliyah. This ‘Rock The Boat’ remix flaunts Jersey Club’s signature bed squeaks, bouncey drums, and syncopated claps to make this R&B classic even sexier. We didn’t even know that was possible.

NLV, three simple letters that in the past year have become synonymous with quality, originality and innovation. If you add just five more to the equation, the result will be beyond your wildest predictions. Not random letters of course, but the ones that compose Laces.

While the latest signee of Nina Las Vegas impri’nt was not a completely new face to me (I first spotted him in 2018 in a Trekkie Trax compilation) it was with his previous release, ‘Sunvocus,’ that caught my attention again. To be honest, I was supposed to wait till the release of his forthcoming EP (set to be released on March 12) but when Oggie shared ‘The Ridge’ in the FUXWITHIT team chat, I knew I couldn’t hold back anymore. Just a single listen is enough to make you fall in love with this song, the next dozen are to appreciate all it has to offer. That gritty bassline for example, the syncopated percussions, that marvelous flute, the muscular drumline, and the list could go on! ‘The Ridge’ is a club beast that is not afraid to take unexplored roads and unexpected spins, and it will hit you with the power of an avalanche.

I’ve already said several times that, when they’re not plagued by sex or promo bots, SoundCloud comments are the best place to find the most genuine and pertinent track’s descriptions. “Tribalism 2.0” is the one who takes the crown this time, as it perfectly embodies the nature of Laces’ creation.

Stream and buy ‘The Ridge’ below or on your favorite platform and be sure to check the glorious visuals by the courtesy of beor.land & oli.svg.

TNGHT’s ‘Dollaz’ was easily one of the biggest and best songs of the year. I don’t say that lightly, it was actually #10 on our list. The simple but addictive vocals combined with the pristine trap production made it the perfect track to embody TNGHT’s long-awaited return. Remixing a release of this magnitude is no easy feat, but if anyone can pull it off, its innovative producer Rome In Silver.

Opening with the simple vocal loop that provides its namesake, Rome in Silver adds in upbeat claps and trippy melodic layers. The first drop is aggressive and trappy, underscored by the car alarm samples and overall smattering of unique sounds. Breaking it down with some gorgeous flute work, the vocals continue to drive things ahead. Where Rome takes us next is completely outside expectations. The pulsing drop is stripped down drawing heavy club influence with the kick drum playing the starring role. Never to stagnate the track flips upside down again as a myriad of sounds enter the song to completely revamp the energy.
