With over 25 years in the drum and bass scene, Swedish producer Seba has undeniably earned himself the title of “legend.” Fitting, then, as his latest album with BCee‘s Spearhead Records borrows its titular title Oni from the mythical beasts of Japanese folk legends. Known for bringing about calamities such as war, plague, and natural disasters, the Oni in many ways personify humanity’s existential fears. They are powerful, evil creatures whose appearance signals a great transformation that is rarely a positive one.

Seba captures the essence of this folklore with the dark, gritty ambiance of Oni. The eponymous track is perhaps the best example of this with its sinister and foreboding bassline accentuated by crisp jungle breaks. ‘Smoke,’ ‘Slam,’ and ‘Fake’ also fit the bill with a certain grunginess that sounds inspired by deep 140 dub. Oni isn’t entirely a foray into darkness, however. Amidst the dark vibes of these tracks, the basslines are occasionally juxtaposed with beautifully melodic chords reminiscent of the kinds of songs you’d hear in Playstation 1 video game menus (if you’ve ever played Ridge Racer or Ape Escape, you know exactly what I’m talking about). Songs like ‘Easy,’ ‘Three,’ and ‘Flow’ take a lighter, more graceful tone, resulting in some very heavenly-sounding liquid drum and bass tracks between the dark heavy-hitters of the album. Seba’s versatility really comes to light with ‘Three,’ a soothing and melodic deep house gem that fills the sonic gap between the ominously dark ‘Slam’ and brightly uplifting ‘Solace’ tracks. Oni really deserves to be listened to in order. The arrangement of these songs is a masterclass in curation.

I’ve been doing one off releases for Spearhead since 2011. Steve (BCee) and I talked a long time about doing an album for Spearhead, and after my 2022 album ‘Ingaro’ on my own label Secret Operations, it was about time to put another album together. Since my musical direction is quite diverse with releases ranging from Hospital records to Function records, I thought it would be good to do an album that reflects that diversity. This album has a bit of jungle, drum & bass, liquid, some darkness, some smoothness. All blended together with my signature sounds.

As a whole, Oni feels like a ride through the iconic styles of liquid and jungle drum and bass, with a bit of deep house as a treat. While not particularly full of dancefloor-movers, these are some superbly written tracks that would befit an introspective listen from start to finish. Be sure to check out Oni below.

John Hislop, better known as Culprate, is among electronic music’s most influential yet underrated artists. For years, the Bristol-based creative has been delivering cutting-edge material that broadly falls under the umbrella of bass music, but contains, and is often driven by, soul-stirring musicality that few in the scene can mimic. From the legendary Nightmares in Reality EP, to his foray into story-telling experimental albums, Culprate refuses to conform to mainstream expectations and constantly strives for innovation.

After six years away from Inspected, a label that the artist has called home on multiple occasions, Culprate recently announced his return to the imprint with the Normal EP, an eight-track journey that promises to resonate deeply with fans both old and new. Due for release on October 31st, the project showcases the artist’s signature technical mastery while delivering a fresh blend of stylistically diverse tracks, finding a perfect home on Inspected where innovation strives. Ahead of the release, we have the extreme pleasure of premiering ‘Area 51’ today.

‘Area 51’ plunges listeners into a sonic enigma, embodying the secrecy and speculation surrounding its namesake. True to his signature style, Culprate crafts a relentless neurofunk soundscape that feels both sinister and otherworldly, mirroring the myths of hidden technologies tied to Area 51. The track unfolds with an eerie atmosphere, as echoing synths and futuristic, metallic clinks build tension as if drawing closer to an unknown threshold. When the drums finally kick in, they do so with surgical precision, driving the track forward with a mechanical rhythm. Culprate uses sharp, punchy, and unpredictable drops and breaks, keeping listeners guessing just as Area 51 mysteries have done so for decades. The relentless bassline twists and mutates throughout, inducing controlled confusion through its intricate, sinister sound design.

‘Area 51’ is a drum and bass experience for the curious and the brave. Don’t miss it below and be sure to check out the rest of the Normal EP tomorrow.

With the release of his 8th studio record, drum and bass icon BCee is back on our radar! This year has been a busy one for BCee. In addition to leading his label, Spearhead Records, he has made appearances on SoundCloud’s Voice Notes series, BBC Radio 1, and Insomniac’s Sunday Sessions. Much to our surprise, he even found the time to chat with us here at FUXWITHIT. I dare say after listening that These Are The Days might just go down as BCee’s magnum opus, his pièce de résistance.

I wanted to explore songwriting and drum & bass in a way I hadn’t done before. Something new compared to my previous albums is that every single one of the tracks is a full vocal song collaborating with different vocalists throughout. The title ‘These Are The Days’ reflects a duality: celebrating the good times while recognizing that these are the only days we get. Whether you’re enjoying life or facing tough times, it’s about seizing the moment and making the most of it.

I never got to ask BCee what inspired the title of this album, but I’d like to think it’s a pang of nostalgia for the early roots of drum and bass. These Are The Days is lavishly adorned with a throng of different vocalists that each bring an uplifting vibe to their respective songs; the feature list is stacked with the likes of Zara Kershaw on the eponymous track, Liam Bailey (who you might recognize from collaborations with Halogenix, among others) on ‘Hurt Each Other,’ and Abi Flynn on ‘Colours.’ There are far too many names to list individually here, but it’s worth saying that despite having a whopping 14 featured collaborations on this album, the mood is remarkably consistent. I imagine it’s not easy to keep a project sounding this cohesive with so many fingers in the cookie jar, but BCee’s managed it just fine.

One of the salient points that stood out to me from our interview with BCee earlier this year is that the kind of soulful, emotionally-charged tracks featured on These Are The Days have a difficult time topping charts in 2024 (e.g. the Beatport Top 100). It really seems that the raunchiness of jump-up style drum and bass has garnered more attention in recent years, especially on the dancefloor. But there’s something to be said about the timelessness of BCee’s heartfelt and sincere style. Tracks like ‘These Are The Days’ and ‘Hurt Each Other’ are deeply profound and that emotional paradigm isn’t something that fades over time; the lyrics on this album are an ode to the human experience, to love and loss and everything that comes with them. A song you relate to today in 2024 might just be a song that transports you back in time when you listen again in 2034. There’s an authenticity here that, as BCee said, you likely won’t find much of in the Beatport Top 100.

If you’re a fan of drum and bass in the slightest, you owe it to yourself to listen to this album. Stream below… and get lost in it.

If you happened to catch our recent interview with the UK drum and bass pioneer, BCee, you’d know that he has an album dropping this October. Following the release of last month’s single ‘Gamble‘ on his label, Spearhead Records, this soulful producer has once again struck gold with ‘Lies,’ featuring songwriter and vocalist Lauren Archer. As of now, three of the thirteen total vocalists off the new album have been revealed and it’s shaping up to be quite the emotional rollercoaster.

When my world was flooding, you were burning bridges. There’s no smoke without a fire.

‘Lies’ is a heavy and heartfelt track exploring the duality of trust and deceit, love and betrayal. Melancholic piano riffs underscore Lauren’s gossamer voice to create an absolutely dreamy track here. There is an unmistakable warmth to Lauren’s tone that rings of heartache, disillusionment, regret, and most importantly, love. This is the kind of song that forces a moment of introspection when you hear it. Some might call it a vibe-killer, I call it a vibe-setter. It’s strange that when I listen to this song, I’m instantly transported back to the 2000s and early 2010s when this kind of liquid drum and bass was really making waves in the States. It’s emotional, it’s saddening, it’s straight-up pretty… and still the drum breaks have me bouncing my leg like an excited puppy. The nuance in the production does not go unnoticed.

In our interview, BCee expressed a real desire to make timeless sounds, and the kind of song that throws your mental fifteen years into the past like this is exactly what I like to think he was referencing. Picking Lauren’s voice for ‘Lies’ was an immaculate choice. She really nails what made the 2000s era of liquid drum and bass so special: emotion. As much as we all love a good track with crazy sound design, sometimes you just need to feel something, you know?

Hopefully, we can look forward to a few more single releases before the entirety of These Are the Days drops this October. That said, BCee has also been quite busy in his spare time. Another relevant tidbit from our earlier interview involves the Green & Glory Garden, a community garden started by him and his wife which aims to provide horticultural therapy to special needs students, underprivileged youth, refugees, and anyone else who needs support to improve confidence and self-esteem. You can learn more about the project and donate here.

Writing about music can be a befuddling task sometimes. Every once in a while, an album comes along for which it’s unimaginably difficult to find the right words to adequately treat it with the reverence it deserves. For me, Halogenix’s Passions is one of those albums.

As a longtime fan of Halogenix, I was ecstatic when he announced Passions to be released on his label Gemini Gemini earlier in February of this year, along with the first single ‘I Told Ya.’ This one song, with its beautifully atmospheric synths and R&B-inspired vocals, captures the essence of what Passions is all about. Track titles like ‘Reverie,’ lyrics like “You satisfy my soul,” and even cover art drawn by his two-year-old son all hint to the meaning of Passions being quite literal in its name. This is not a high-octane, jump-up kind of experience. The album flows modestly from track to track with no real sense of urgency, as if each song is a singular movement in one unified orchestral piece.

In a more literal sense, it seems that Halogenix himself was not in an urgent rush to put his debut album out to the world. In a KoolFM broadcast of all original tracks last Summer, he gives listeners a sense of his selection process, saying “Sometimes the vibe is right, but the overall sound is not.” I’m not sure if “perfectionist” is the most apt word to describe this approach, but goddamn is the man meticulously precise when it comes to setting a consistent mood. That we ended up with 13 tracks that made the cut, so to speak, is quite frankly a miracle.

The instrumentation of Passions as a whole doesn’t deviate far from the jazzy, soulful aura that fans have come to expect from Halogenix, but nor does it at any point begin to sound banal or repetitive. From the slowed-down, reverberant intro of ‘Keeping You Close’ to the playfully upbeat melodies of ‘No More’ and ‘Soldout,’ Passions is riddled with some of the most harmonious and intricate production we’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing from Halogenix. This album is absolutely one to listen through start to finish. My words may not do this project justice, but I promise you that those 13 tracks will.

Tiesto has released his first drum&bass song in over a decade, Brownies&Lemonade’s DNBNL project has partnered with Deadbeats and is going to Tomorrowland, Deadmau5 has played a D&B set at EDC Mexico, Chase & Status are once again one of hottest acts around, a new North American WORSHIP tour is about to kick off and Rohaan has just wrapped up another multi-week series of show in the States.

Now. I won’t say the phrase. Nor will I dust off the infamous hashtag (you know the one). I’m just being objective. The ball is rolling (pun intended) and this gives me a chance to throw myself into the fray with something that flirts with both culture and SEO. This month I bring back Bootleg Business with a massive drum&bass pack of 30 (unofficial) remixes that showcase pretty much everything the genre has to offer. Forget obscure cuts or hyper-sophisticated intellectual material though, this collection is strictly party-friendly. We have jump-up bangers, mainstage classic reworks, liquid rollers, ten-year-old remixes, ten-day-old remixes, weird bootlegs, and cheesy edits of pop songs. This Bootleg Business volume has it all. Rumble remix included.

Friendly reminder that this list doesn’t pretend to showcase the finest bootlegs around, nor the rarest. Music can be (just) fun, remember? This is an opportunity to have fun celebrating the art of unofficial remixes and, why not, a chance to find some new goodies to spice up your tracklists ahead of the festival season. As in the case of my summer special, the playlist is loosely divided into two parts. It starts with the heaviest cuts and it progresses into the more melodic tracks.

Have fun!

In August of 2022, we featured NUEQ in our Focus Five segment, not knowing much about the artist, but surprised by the combination of his sheer talent and minimal SoundCloud following. Since then, the artist has shared a handful of impressive tracks, while simultaneously growing a more substantial audience, earning performances and praise in Israel, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

The next phase of NUEQ’s musical odyssey promises to be thrilling, as he makes his inaugural appearance on Inspected with the Zahara EP, coinciding with their 13-year anniversary as trendsetters in music, fashion, and beyond. What better way to celebrate this milestone than by embracing such a formidable talent into the Inspected fold? NUEQ has long admired Inspected, and the journey to the release of this project was surely rewarding.

In the words of NUEQ, “This past year and a half was challenging. I decided to leave everything behind and move to Bristol to try and advance NUEQ. After three months, I realized it wasn’t the ideal place for me so I decided to fly to Mexico to get closer to the US. I spent two months in Mexico, relaxed and traveled, and continued working on this EP. The next destination was Denver, Colorado, and it didn’t take me long to realize that I belong here. And here, out of all places, I finished ‘Zahara’, my EP dedicated to THE label – Inspected. Working on this project taught me that you don’t need anything but desire. It pushed me beyond what I thought I was capable of, and showed me that through hard work dreams come true.”

The Zahara EP signifies a remarkable evolution in NUEQ’s artistry, encompassing four diverse yet cohesive tracks. ‘Viernes’ opens with a serene sonic landscape, before seamlessly transitioning to a hard-hitting bass section without ever losing the musical essence from the introduction. ‘Neo’ maintains the energy but diverges stylistically as NUEQ explores the technicalities of drum and bass with this cut. ‘Ammonites Wall’ follows suit with a mystical tone reminiscent of ‘Viernes,’ maintaining a light and airy feel in the introduction before shifting to a heavier drop around the ninety-second mark. ‘Astarte’ brings the project to a close with NUEQ further demonstrating his ability to navigate between different styles, layering otherworldly soundscapes over mesmerizing drums to draw listeners into his sonic realm.

Inspected and NUEQ; a match made in heaven. Don’t miss Zahara below.

2023 has blessed listeners with a plethora of new Ivy Lab singles and EPs. From the abstract, bass-heavy single ‘Profit’ to the symphonic, breakbeat-inspired Demon Dust EP, the UK duo have taken their pan-genre experimentation to new heights since the release of their critically acclaimed album Infinite Falling Ground last year. Idols Fall / Snap 101 now enters their discography as an overdue return to Ivy Lab’s drum and bass roots.

Despite managing their own label, Twenty Twenty Global, Ivy Lab have recently been releasing via other outlets due to the “club-oriented” nature of these new tracks. Demon Dust was released on Future Classic and the trend continues with Idols Fall / Snap 101 dropping on Critical Music, notably one of the great bastions of drum and bass music today. Taking a break from the derivations of instrumental hip-hop and American influences that the duo has become known for lately, Idols Fall / Snap 101 is uniquely European in its origins. Drawing from the emotional and technically sophisticated releases from labels like Metalheadz along with the resurgence of classic European club music, this two-track 170 bpm tour de force is meant to get you on your feet.

‘Idols Fall’ sounds like a track straight out of Ivy Lab’s early catalog, back when the duo was a trio (with Halogenix filling the third slot of the roster). The faint echo of Seyaa’s voice in the intro gives way to the most beautifully-mastered percussion one could ask for on a liquid drum and bass track, adorned with impeccably clean snares and grungy basslines. The instrumentation is redolent of other masters of the genre like Netsky, Logistics, and Nu:Tone. The transition into ‘Snap 101’ is a seamless one. The second track is pensive yet uplifting, orchestral yet dance-inspiring. Equally appropriate both in the club or in your headphones, ‘Snap 101’ is a testament to the way Ivy Lab is able to effortlessly evoke a broad range of emotions with a single song. Context indeed plays an integral part of the experience of this EP.

Idols Fall / Snap 101 is quintessential Ivy Lab, and is simply a must-listen for drum and bass fans. Stream the release below and be sure to check out the visual accompaniment for ‘Idols Fall’ on YouTube here. Here’s to hoping the drum and bass train keeps rolling into 2024.

London duo Chase & Status define iconic in the arena of bass music. The veteran artists have been trailblazing their unique path for two decades, constantly evolving while pushing new boundaries. Their latest offering 2 Ruff, Vol. 1 sees them continuing that path over 10 exceptional tracks that fuse DnB, grime, UK Rap, bass, and beyond.

Billed as a mixtape, the new album is all hits no misses, taking listeners into a sweaty basement rave in the heart of the UK. It’s dark, gritty, relentless, and exceptional. It features anthemic cuts like ‘Baddadan’ (feat. IRAH, Flowdan, Trigga & Takura), the Stefflon Don-assisted ‘Selecta,’ and ‘Liquor & Cigarettes’ with Hedex & Ardee.

The world capshun created from his journey is filled with many qualities, emotions, and shining tones. His way of implementing vast storytelling throughout his works is simply breathtaking. Creating senses of hope, peace, and true strive with every release. Never backing down for a second, this artist has inspired many while showcasing major upgrades to his own techniques and songwriting. And with his newest EP, Ethos, finally out in the world, he’s yet again pushed his boundaries over the limit! Creating another unique collection of priceless artifacts of sound. that are fit for a museum.

For me ‘Ethos’ is my creative exploration in the sounds of the culture that I like listening to and making right now. The word ethos is defined as ‘the distinguishing character, sentiment, moral nature, or guiding beliefs of a person, group, or institution.’ So I took time to listen and have my ear down to the music and culture of the electronic scene and implement those into my own sound. – capshun

What makes this EP special and exciting is how easily you can hear his true form taking flight above the clouds and dazzling his audience with intricate arrangements, gorgeous sound design, and magnificent textures. Making up five individual realms to explore and get lost in for all eternity. All connected together like well-nurtured roots from a tree. Working together in harmony. Resulting in an everlasting vision taking the spotlight. Leaving you with a euphoric and empowering feeling. From electronic trap to drum n bass, this work of art is nothing but outstanding. He’s honored the capshun name and what it stands for with pure might and passion from beginning to end. Easily his best work to date! So make sure to show your support by streaming Ethos everywhere!
