This week’s guest mix takes us halfway around the world and is a foray into some sounds that you (probably) haven’t heard before. Hailing from Betul, India, Baajewala is an artist whose sound design absolutely blew me away the first time I stumbled upon him. A true pioneer of electronic music in India, Baajewala has seen international success, including a debut EP release on Quality Goods Records and having his tracks being played out live on shows like Triple J Mix Up and Diplo’s Revolution. This man has impeccable taste when it comes to both dubstep and trap music, and his production style features a slew of sounds and instruments that I would wager many western-based producers couldn’t even name. Dive into his interview below to learn more about what inspires his unique take on bass music and what’s in store for the future of Baajewala!

Thank you so much for hopping on today’s guest mix! What kind of vibe are we about to hear from you?

Hey! Thank you so much for having me. Expect some groovy animal sounds blended with hard ahh beats. Just having fun with it, really.

Can you give us a little bit of background about yourself? What made you begin a career in music?

My dad got me a toy keyboard when I was around 5—I had no clue what the buttons did, but I kept pressing them and got hooked. Later, I joined the school band and picked up the guitar at 12. From there on, it just snowballed.

I’m sure most of our readers aren’t intimately familiar with the music scene in India. How would you describe it? Do you think it deserves more recognition internationally?

Absolutely. India has an incredibly diverse music landscape—each region has its own flavor. Producers here have been pushing ethnic sounds with modern beats for years. Even big names like Skrillex are incorporating Indian vocals and vibes now. I think most Western music has its roots in jazz and rhythm-based genres, but here, we’re blending centuries of tradition with new-age sounds. Look at artists like Hanumankind and Kalmi—they’re already breaking through. The underground scene here is evolving fast, and it’s only a matter of time before more Indian artists start showing up on global charts.

Everyone’s using the same synths and plugins, but it’s those real, raw, human elements that stand out to me.

There’s obviously a lot of cultural influence when it comes to the instrumentation in your tracks. What’s your favorite sound/instrument that we don’t hear American and European producers use very often?

I listen to a lot of world music—everything from African to Arabic. But I love the sound of a real sitar, the thump of a dholak, flutes from different cultures… even a distorted guitar or piano can feel so alive. Everyone’s using the same synths and plugins, but it’s those real, raw, human elements that stand out to me.

Do you play any live instruments yourself? If so, what are they?

Yeah! I’ve been playing keyboard since I was a kid. I also mess around with guitar and ukulele, and I have a whole cabinet of percussive instruments and flutes. I’ve got a melodica, a harmonica I’m still figuring out, ghungroos, and even a hang drum. I love picking up new instruments—it comes naturally after watching live musicians.

I think it’s safe to say that your Hell Raiden EP on Quality Goods Records really helped you gain some attention abroad. How did it feel being able to release on such a prominent label? Any future releases in the works with Quality Goods or anyone else?

Honestly, it was surreal. I come from a small town where most people don’t even know what dubstep is. I discovered electronic music thanks to the internet—ripping UZ, Hucci, TroyBoi tracks off EDM.com. So when I saw UZ comment on Reddit about one of my songs and then repost it? That was a full-circle moment. Working with QGR was such a learning experience, especially on the promotion and curation side. Would love to work with them again, or anyone pushing the envelope.

When we proposed this guest mix, you mentioned it had been a while since you had done a proper mix to release. Does that mean most of your time lately is spent in the studio working on new songs instead?

Definitely. I’ve been working more as a record producer than a DJ these days. There aren’t many consistent ways to make money from music here unless you blow up, so I’ve been doing freelance audio engineering and production work to pay the bills. On my off days, I’m back in my own world—making beats, finishing tracks, and sending stuff out to collaborators.

Just listening to all kinds of music and thinking: “What made the artist make this?” I love diving into new genres, studying older contemporary music, and reading about art in general. I’m pretty much immersed in music all the time.

Who or what are your biggest sources of inspiration when it comes to music?

Just listening to all kinds of music and thinking: “What made the artist make this?” I love diving into new genres, studying older contemporary music, and reading about art in general. I’m pretty much immersed in music all the time. Some of my all-time inspirations are A.R. Rahman, Skrillex, Mithoon, Amit Trivedi, Sneha Khanwalkar. Bollywood music is in my DNA—it shaped the way I hear and create music.

Are there any big plans you have for 2025, music-related or otherwise?

Yes! I’m currently working on my first album as a singer-songwriter/producer. I’ve also got a bunch of dubstep stuff ready for the good ol’ SoundCloud fam. And some collabs from last year are finally dropping soon. Exciting times!

Who are some underground artists you’d like to shine a light on for our readers? Bonus points for more Indian artists that deserve some attention!

Haha, love that! Shoutout to Kriday, Brijplease/Three Oscillators, UKato, and Kalmi—some truly innovative sounds coming from them. Also, my favorite collaborators: Nanku, Karun, GHILDIYAL, and Frappe Ash. They’re all pushing boundaries and bringing something new to the table.

Do you have time for any hobbies outside of music? How do you spend your free time?

I’ve recently gotten into reading and have been trying to learn how to cook—planning to move out on my own soon. I spend a lot of time chatting with my parents and friends, and I try to go out now and then just to clear my head.

AI can make you melodies but pressing keys and putting out the vibrations of the heart is only a living Human’s ability!

What words of inspiration would you like to give to anyone aspiring to learn how to produce?

I would say focus on being a good musician, AI can make you melodies but pressing keys and putting out the vibrations of the heart is only a living Human’s ability! Also, use your DAW and technology as your toy.

Any last words for our readers? Anything at all!

It’s been so nice talking about dubstep again after ages. As the (not-so-new) Skrillex album says, “Skrillex is dead”… but I’m excited to see what’s next.

The great city of Detroit has once again blessed us all with another musical gem. KiLO is an artist I was wholly unfamiliar with until I had the pleasure of seeing him play live earlier this year. It’s always exciting to see a new name in your city, so I went in blind. Lordy, I was unprepared. During a night filled with the sounds of house music and ambient techno, KiLO’s set hit me like a ton of bricks. The dials on the crowd’s swag meter turned all the way up, and suddenly the room was bursting with hype for KiLO’s heart-pounding 808s and cathartic dubs. “What a superb display of crowd play… and from a complete stranger,” I thought. Later that night, digging through his SoundCloud page, I fell in love with his collection of sultry flips like this MF DOOM tribute. Needless to say, I was impressed.

Fast-forward to today and KiLO has hit a milestone with the release of his first EP titled Intro. Given the set I heard that fateful night, I can honestly say that I expected something completely different from this release. The thuggin’ 808s and trap blends are out, but blissful, dreamy sine waves are back on the menu. I don’t mean that in a bad way, either. KiLO’s adaptability shines on this EP from the moment the first track, ‘Ourobourous’, begins. A whole two-plus minutes of downtempo, cinematic synths build up as if they were the beginning of a symphony movement, culminating in a fleeting moment of silence that gives way to the rest of the EP. Call it the intro to Intro, if you will. ‘Breathe’ and ‘Aether’ follow in a very natural-sounding progression. Nothing is rushed here and every instrument is meticulously mixed and mastered. Another Detroit-based musician, LowKey, snags a feature on ‘Soda’ and hits listeners with some killer lyrical work. The crux of the album, for me, is the final track, ‘Music.’ I’ve always been a sucker for breakbeats, drum and bass, and things that generally go fast, so it was a nice surprise to hear the end of the album pick up the pace a bit. Despite the tempo change, the transition feels seamless. Well done, mate.

This EP certainly isn’t the last we’ll hear of KiLO. Be sure to check him out if you happen to be around the Great Lakes and see his name pop up. For those readers further away, you can still listen to Intro below. Remember to go support those names you might’ve never seen on flyers before, folks, because sometimes you might just find yourself floored like I did.

Our man Hydraulix is back again this week for our next guest mix installment! After dropping his NERVES EP on Wakaan earlier this year, the versatile Australian producer has been riding a wave of successful self-releases, including our previously-featured ‘duCk huNT‘ and the speaker-wrecking banger ‘HAWT‘ with Oski. Most recently, his track ‘I Spit Da Fire‘ was released on We Are Deadbeats Vol. 6.

Given his output since the year began, I’m not sure when the man sleeps, but whatever beauty sleep he manages is clearly paying off. We can’t wait to hear what the rest of year brings from this wicked talented producer, so until then, let’s get into the guest mix and hear what he has to say!

First off, it’s good to have you in the spotlight here at FUXWITHIT again! How has your year been going thus far?

Thanks for having me back. Always love catching up with you guys. So far so good. I’ve been doing a lot of self-releases which I’ve been loving very freeing the whole process.

What should our listeners expect to hear in this guest mix?

Lots of unreleased. I’ve got it stacked with unreleased from myself and a bunch of friends. And defs expect to hear a lot of deeper type tunes. I feel like the mix is a good indication of the direction I’m trying to head moving forward.

I’d say you’re one of many artists we touch on here who really can’t be pigeon-holed into a single genre given the variety of your discography. That said, who are your biggest musical influences?

I’m really so all over the place with where I get my inspiration from. Few people who always get me excited and eager to hear new music are Flume, Labrinth, Skrillex, TroyBoi, and Billie Eilish funnily enough.

Your most recent single with Oski, ‘HAWT,’ seems to have been a big hit now that it’s been played out by the likes of Four Tet, Excision, Zeds Dead, Liquid Stranger, etc. How does it feel to have such a stellar response to your track?

Thanks so much for the kind words. We are both stoked with the response to ‘HAWT.’ It’s obviously super rewarding to have people you look up to appreciate your music. I fully self-released ‘HAWT’ and to get arguably a bigger response than most tunes is super fulfilling.

Is it safe to say a full Hydroski EP is indeed happening?

It’s happening. We’ve got all the tracks there it’s just getting it all finished up. We’ve both been pretty busy recently, I just moved state and Oski has been working his ass off and hasn’t really had time to sit down. But it’s all there and well underway. The first track in the mix is actually one of the new tunes.

At the moment I’m just trying to write the best music I can and make it all cohesive together. I feel like I’m finally setting up and bringing people into the Hydraulix world and I’m super excited about what that will bring.

What’s next for you as a producer? Any big dreams you can share with us?

Man honestly at the moment I’m just trying to write the best music I can and make it all cohesive together. I feel like I’m finally setting up and bringing people into the Hydraulix world and I’m super excited about what that will bring.

If you had the opportunity to perform anywhere in the world for one night, where would it be?

I’ve got so many bucket list venues I’d love to play. Red Rocks is one for sure. But some other spots include Brooklyn Mirage, Palladium, and would die if I ever played EDC Vegas.

Anything particular remaining in 2024 that you’re super excited for?

I’ve actually just been wrapping a track with Tempa T that I’m super excited for and have a whole bunch of collabs with people I really I look up to. I don’t know if it’ll all come out in 2024 but some of the new music is gonna do some damage!

When you’re not making music, where does your free time go?

I’m such a homebody. I really don’t do much that exciting. I spend a lot of my free time watching NRL (Rugby league) and playing fantasy NRL with friends and usually taking my dog for walks and to the beach. I also love sewing and making clothes. I haven’t been doing that enough recently but now that I’m set up in my new spot I’m definitely gonna get back into it.

I think the biggest thing is consistency and perseverance. Sometimes it feels like your music falls on deaf ears but it’s important to just keep going. You never know what will hit and what won’t. But don’t get discouraged when stuff doesn’t.

Do you have any words of encouragement for aspiring producers out there?

I’m a big supporter of up-and-comers. It feels like some of the new people coming through are crazy talented. I think the biggest thing is consistency and perseverance. Sometimes it feels like your music falls on deaf ears but it’s important to just keep going. You never know what will hit and what won’t. But don’t get discouraged when stuff doesn’t. Also… Don’t compare yourself to others. It’s a slippery slope.

Bonus question: How does Australia put out so much good music? Seriously.

Hahaha, I wish I had the answer for this. We really do pump them out over here. I’m just grateful to be part of the community here in Aus. I find it’s a very supportive and nurturing group of producers from Aus.

Hydraulix is showing no signs of slowing down when it comes to his 2024 releases. Hot on the heels of his NERVES EP released in February on Wakaan (which you can read about here), he’s back at it again, this time with a wild left-field single in ‘duCk huNT.’ Against the backdrop of NERVES, ‘duCk huNT’ almost sounds like it’s from a different producer entirely. This track would feel right at home in a space bass playlist as opposed to the heavier, clashier style of NERVES, which should give you an idea of this producer’s incredible versatility.

From the undulating sub-bass to the wonky, wobbly duck-themed drop, everything about this track screams “stank face.” I can’t tell if the drop is a morphed sample from the original Duck Hunt video game… but I sure hope it is, as it would fit right in with the “Hey, listen!” vocal sample from The Legend of Zelda that also accompanies it. Despite how off-puttingly weird this track might be to some listeners, I think this is a perfect example what can come of a producer in the studio making something silly. I can only imagine that the crowd reactions from ‘duCk huNT’ when Hydraulix plays this out live are sure to be a gold mine for his social media pages.

Per Hydraulix himself, ‘duCk huNT’ is only the first from a string of self-releases to be expected in the near future. If they all manage to capture the energy of this track, I think we’re in for a good time. Until then, be sure to stream ‘duCk huNT’ below.

msft. has been a persistent favorite of ours here at FUXWITHIT. This Italian-based producer has consistently released some of the cleanest and most forward-thinking breakbeat-inspired tracks over the last few years. The UK influence runs deep on lowercasE as well with delightful two-step drum patterns and garage-friendly tempos. He self-describes the EP as a “collection of 4 tracks you can vibe to pretty much anywhere you want,” and damn did he hit the nail on the head.

There is a pleasant homogeneity to the four tracks on lowercasE, but it would be shortsighted to say that any of them sound exactly the same. While clearly sharing the same UK-based influences, each track is unique with differing energy levels and moods. ‘dontwaiT’ and ‘inthedarK,’ for example, both share sultry vocals and rolling basslines that could get any crowd to break out their best moves. ‘aaaH’ and ‘elevateD (feat. Rakjay)’ feel more like transitional tracks that a DJ could throw in their repertoire to keep crowds moving without sacrificing the vivacity of the set. This back-and-forth on the EP makes for an easy listening session, with the caveat that if used tastefully, any of these four tracks have the potential to make a dance floor explode.

I’m all for the continued resurgence of garage- and breakbeat-inspired tunes we’re seeing across the music landscape at the moment. To that end, msft. here is 100% doing his part. Check out lowercasE below and get those knees up high while you two-step the night away.

Hailing from the land down under, Sydney-based Hydraulix has had an extraordinary past year. As a well-established member of the Wakaan roster, with additional releases featured on Quality Goods Records, Disciple, and TWONK, the producer has been grinding away in the studio with plenty to show for it. On top of studio time, Hydraulix has had the opportunity to tour across the United States, Canada, China, Japan, Australia, and elsewhere over the last 12 months, garnering an abundance of new fans along the way.

The three-track NERVES EP is the latest addition to Hydraulix’s discography. A brilliant foray into dubstep, grime, and drum and bass, the EP makes a point of switching up genres with each track, never pigeonholing itself into any single one. ‘ANXIOUS,’ featuring the gritty vocals of Maksim MC, is a true dubstep banger with UK grime elements as the cherry on top. ‘Click Clack’ with Nika D carries much the same vibe at first before erupting into a tribal trap-esque drop that may remind listeners of producers along the lines of MEMBA or XAVAGE. ‘All Eyes’ wraps up the EP with a sudden but not unwelcome tempo change to drum and bass. With its suspenseful build-up to an electrifying first drop, this track cements itself as an absolute roller that is sure to have jump-up fans losing it on the dance floor.

“So excited to be dropping the Nerves EP with Wakaan. I called the EP Nerves because it’s something I constantly feel when releasing music. Always nervous about how it will be received, will it get playlisting, have I pushed myself enough, have I pushed it too far. Writing music is the most rewarding and disheartening thing at the same time. Constant nerves on the edge. But at the end of the day you just gotta write what’s true to you. I’ve always loved all forms of bass music and this EP I wanted to show a bit of that with Dubstep, DnB and even some trap to cap it off.” – Hydraulix

Hydraulix’s well-deserved career continues to prosper with the release of the NERVES EP. Stream it in full below and be sure to check out the Bandcamp version for a bonus instrumental of ‘Click Clack.’

Philadelphia-based Charles Nimbus has had a wildly successful year in 2023. Playing direct support for such heavy-hitters as Tipper, LTJ Bukem, Resonant Language, and EAZYBAKED, the Six Star Records wonder kid has dipped his toes in a wide swath of sonic palettes recently, coming a long way from his origin days as a lone SoundCloud producer. UKG, jungle, halftime, or dubstep… you’re likely to hear them all in any of his live sets. His latest release, ‘Ghost Dance,’ is the premier embodiment of the diverse soundscapes he has spent the last year cultivating.

We love a good two-step beat here at FUXWITHIT and ‘Ghost Dance’ fully delivers on that premise. Rhythmic sub-bass meanders through the track like a mountain road while impeccably clean hi-hats keep the two-step structure consistent. A brief pause in the percussion lasts just long enough to give the impression that the track might be ending before the drums circle entrancingly back in for another round. A faintly dark-sounding but not quite melancholy track, ‘Ghost Dance’ captures the aura of a pitch-black basement dancefloor mover.

The year is not yet over for Charles Nimbus. With an end-of-the-year support slot still lined up for Jade Cicada in Brooklyn, his 2023 success story is poised to continue unabated well into 2024. While you await your chance to hear his exhilarating sets live in the flesh, check out ‘Ghost Dance’ below.

With a new label to his name, Memory Palace Records, and a nationwide tour that has nearly wrapped up, Of the Trees has enjoyed massive success within the bass music circuit in 2023. Crenshaw, likewise, has recently opened himself up to a wider audience than his usual Dirtybird Campout crossover fans with his performances at Wakaan Festival in both 2022 and 2023 (the former of which is available on SoundCloud here), as well as an opening slot for Of the Trees at his recent Red Rocks headline performance. ‘Blue Mile’ is the cherry on top this year for these two producers. Featuring the majestic lyricism of UK grime legend Strategy – one who has notably had just as successful a year – this is a do-not-miss track from three heavyweight dons of the bass music scene.

A single repeating note opens the track before erupting into fast-paced drum beats that mirror the speed with which Strategy spits out bars. The rolling drumline gives way to an angelic empty space halfway through the track, reminiscent of deep 140 bpm classics from the likes of Coki, Benga, and Caspa. The moment Strategy goes silent is the best kind of sonic whiplash, the kind of moment that makes one audibly gasp “Whoa…” There’s hardly enough time to piece together the first verse of the track before he comes roaring back in for the second between the hypnotizing bassline and sharp hi-hats. It’s a simultaneously filthy and poetic end to this composition.

Everybody knows I’m a UK don / But I’m back on my Transatlantic shit
– Strategy

Strategy does not miss a beat on ‘Blue Mile.’ Amidst the murky low-end rumblings of Of the Trees and Crenshaw, syllable after syllable fires through like a machine gun. It’s clear that the grime wave has finally cemented itself stateside, with Strategy himself remarking that he’s “Got a decent amount of American followers.” In this case, they’re well-deserved.

‘Blue Mile’ is a standout track for Memory Palace. Along with the likes of LYNY, Esseks, DMVU, and Of the Trees himself, Crenshaw is a perfect fit for the vibe of the label. Having recently announced a hiatus next year from his usual Claude VonStroke alias, we can only wonder what label we’ll see him collaborating with next. Longtime fans are still awaiting a second Crenshaw album, given that the first came out nearly seven years ago. Whoever it is, they’re in for a treat. If 2023 has given us any indication of the trajectory of these two producers, it’s safe to say they’re only going up.

On the latest treat from CloZee‘s label, Odyzey Music, jordnmoody‘s FØRSAKEN EP brings listeners a taste of sultry basslines and rolling drumbeats that are perfect for October’s Halloween aesthetic. A familiar face to FUXWITHIT who’s made waves in the freeform bass scene with releases on Wakaan, Cyclops Recordings, Bassrush, Jadū Dala, and others, jordnmoody has once again hit the jackpot with this malevolent masterpiece.

“It’s a madness, I been trappin’, I seen action,” Pete English’s voice echoes on the first track. A devilish tune rooted in UK dubstep, ‘ACT!ØN’ fills the room with a sinister air. A slight synth wobble, pervasive underneath Pete English’s voice throughout, is at once both sensual and spine-chilling. The slow swing of the percussion in ‘DREAMSCAPE’ is like a wade through sonic murk, interspersed with an angelic vocal gently resonating through the background haze. The namesake track of the EP then comes out swinging with a wave of phantasmagorical sub-bass. The absolute frisson of ‘FØRSAKEN’ will leave your ears quivering with pleasure. As an extra-special treat, jordnmoody has graced the EP with a downtempo VIP of his bass-house banger ‘VOICES.’ An eerie, nightmarish, haze veils the slowed-down final track. This is proper Halloween music.

October isn’t over yet, which means there’s still time to get spooky. Keep the skeleton decorations out and grab a fistful of your favorite candy. Don’t forsake the opportunity and go give this EP the attention it deserves.

If you have ever had the pleasure of catching any members of the bass/deep dubstep trio Ternion Sound doing a live set, you know that they bring outrageous levels of energy and fun. They have a lot of heart and give a lot of love – including in our latest installment of Do You FUXWITHIT?.

I got to go in-depth on a few key topics at Department of Civilian Dance‘s annual Dark Matter party, where 2/3s of the group Jack Denney and Aric Okerman headlined.

The guys had me laughing all the way through chats about the staple Minneapolis hamburger the Jucy Lucy (alt: Juicy), whether requests are a good thing or not, how Patreon has been a major boon and way to connect with their fans + some textbook examples of ‘bass face.’ Check out the interview in all its glory.

I also highly recommend a listen to their latest release, Digital Artifice (2023), out now. It’s an artistic journey and especially great to listen to front to back.
