Recently, I’ve been in a mood where I’ve been exploring older music. Everything from 90s hip-hop to 2000s dubstep has been in my rotation as of late, and that has also led me to discovering newer artists that boast this nostalgic sound. Sherbrooke-based Detoor is a great example of such an artist. When I first heard ‘Retrocausality,’ I was hypnotized by the minimal yet rhythmic tones of the introduction, bringing me back to the older styles of dubstep, all while carrying a modern flair. As the drop hit, I was immediately sold on Detoor, and knew I had to explore more of his discography. With releases on labels such as Prime Audio and Drama Club Recordings, Detoor’s sound dives further into that deep, dark dubstep that is so reminiscent of the early days of the sound, and I simply can’t get enough of it. ‘Time Dilation’ with Vince Grave is another track that really stood out to me, largely because it’s simple in its ideas but executed so well. A track doesn’t need endless layers of complexity to be catchy, and ‘Time Dilation’ is a perfect example of that. With less than 1k followers on SoundCloud at the time of writing, it’s silly how underrated Detoor is.

Deep, dark, murky, worldly. These are a few words that come to mind when pressing play on willyb’s music. The Nashville-based bass producer has been making major waves online with his engrossing signature blend of deep dubstep. His breakout single ‘Egyptus’ is the perfect introduction to the artist, pairing room-shaking low end with crisp percussion, stirring strings, foreign samples, immersive atmospheres, and an ever-evolving arrangement. This masterful work has amassed over a million streams across platforms and has become a viral sensation on social media. The success is no fluke, since the release, willyb has been locked in crafting heater after heater, with tracks like ‘Tunisia’ and ‘GHOST’ further proving his ability to conjure sonic worlds. He’s hot off playing the iconic Infrasound festival, and his career is only going up. Look out for willyb taking over for the rest of the year and into 2027.

With just a few days left of summer, we felt it was only right to cap off the warm-weather season with an appropriately hot guest mix and interview with chriz javey. The mix is 45 minutes of his signature style blending RnB and classic dance influences with fresh house and UKG grooves. In our interview, we discuss his journey as an artist, the benefits of producing across genres, advice for artists, explore what he’s bumping on repeat, and much more.

Tell us about the mix. Where are we headed when we press play?

A High Energy Soulful House Mix. Something you can sweat, sing, cry, and dance to, all at the same time.

How’s life treating you?

I can’t complain. I moved to DC about 2-3 years ago, and I’ve been having a ball out here. I’m close to my family and friends in Ohio, I’m close to NY if I need to go up there, and I’m in the middle of everything on the East Coast. It’s great.

What inspired you to start making music? How has the journey evolved?

If it wasn’t for Heavy Metal, I don’t think I would be here. I remember when Korn collaborated with Skrillex, and I was trying so hard to emulate what was being done in that song on guitar. I then realized most of Skrillex’s part was done on a computer, and the rest was history lol.

You’ve been releasing music for over a decade now. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in this time?

Never give up and always be yourself.

You’ve released music across a wide array of genres, from house and UKG to trap, DnB, Amapiano, drill, and beyond. What draws you to creating a song in a specific genre?

I ask myself what is missing in the type of genre, where it’s house, amapiano etc. and I’ll create a vibe around that and see how it does while I’m DJing for crowds.

You can learn one genre outside of the norm, and then apply elements of that genre to another. It’s fun experimenting.

Has producing across genres impacted how you create? If so, how?

It does, it keeps me from getting bored of making music. I don’t think I could sit and strictly make the same thing over and over. But that’s how you discover new things. You can learn one genre outside of the norm, and then apply elements of that genre to another. It’s fun experimenting.

What advice would you give new producers who are trying to level up?

YouTube University and a good Reddit community are your best friends. Also, making good content is what’s gonna separate you from everyone else.

What are you most excited about for the rest of the year?

I’m excited to spend time with family and friends for the holiday season. Also hoping I can take a vacation before the new year starts.

I’ve been teasing so much unreleased music, seeing what works and what doesn’t work. I can definitely promise new music but I’m hoping to be more consistent in the upcoming years of 2027.

What have you been listening to on repeat lately?

A lot of MPH, Kettama, and TwoFaced. I think the only type of dubstep I’m listening to at the moment is beastboi. I’m really digging Leon Thomas, Odeal and Babyfxce E at the moment as well.

What do you enjoy most outside of music?

I’ve recently been loving going to the gym and running around DC, keeping my mile pace time under 10 minutes, at least!

Armaggethur

The Spotify and SoundCloud algorithms have blessed me with tons of incredible, unknown talents over the years. But now, for the first time in almost ten years of doing this, this month’s pick actually comes from Instagram. Armaggethur landed on my radar when his collaborator gallego‘s Instagram post randomly popped up on my feed the other day. The swagger of ‘machinery’ immediately had me in a trance as I looped through the reel countless times. It’s a track that embodies the music we love at FUXWITHIT, from its rhythmic bounce to its snappy percussion.  As I checked the comments, it seems many established artists had the same reaction, as producers such as Nitepunk, Eazybaked, and samsin had all left comments. It turns out we featured gallego back in 2024, but I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to highlight Armaggethur, an artist whose signature trends more towards dubstep but who is undeniably versatile. ‘LUNATIC,’ for example, obviously carries a heavier undertone, but its minimalist execution is truly enthralling – and that’s what Armaggethur represents. I guess what they say is true about social media. Promote your shit, you never know who might land on it.

Jon Cass

No algorithm can beat the power of word-of-mouth — especially when it lands face to face, right in the middle of the dancefloor. So after SVDKO screamed “I have a name for you” into my ear while Sam Gellaitry was delivering an absolute masterclass of a set in the background, I did the only thing there was to do: pulled out my phone and muttered “hey google, search Jon Cass” (unlike me, the search engine instantly clocked that we weren’t talking about Jon Casey). The moment I saw that the top result was a Reddit post titled “Who is this Jon Cass guy I keep seeing all over my socials” I knew I was in for a wild ride. Hilarious thread aside, the Jon Cass iceberg runs deep, even though he only stepped into the bass scene in 2024. The social-media persona hides a multi-genre producer with a past also as a touring artist for rock bands (Enter Shikari among them) who decided to consecrate the last couple of years to the 140 religion. A serial collaborator with a kink for brooding basslines since his very first release, he’s just dropped an EP in joint venture with the aforementioned SVDKO and Mary Droppinz, eponymously titled 140 MAFIA. The three-track project makes for a solid entry point into Jon’s catalogue, which should be followed by his debut EP on Monstercat, STUTTER / STEP OUT, and his Jon Cass vs Froidy or UKF b5b set to get a taste of his swing behind the booth. From there, it’s up to you to work your way in the Cass-verse.

KAZU

It’s not often that we feature a producer in Focus Five who has already been featured on our site, but KAZU is a bit of a unique one. The producer first made his debut on our site in 2021 with the Trap Party release ‘FAYA’ alongside Pirana. The track is a heater, but since then he completely fell off our radar. That is, until we recently came upon ‘SIP‘. His most recent single is a masterclass in bouncy trap, combining booming drums, addictive leads, bubbly FX, and some seriously undeniable grooves. It’s a reminder that trap can be as fun as it is hard. The release builds on the momentum of his recent releases ‘JACK’ and ‘CHOPPY,’ both of which are certified bangers. If you’re a fan of bouncy trap, KAZU might be your new favourite find.

S.Murk

What happens when you combine early Drum and Bass/Jungle vibes, with modern glitch, effect rigs and basses? Well, if you’re not fully sure, S.Murk has got you covered. The two styles are seamlessly woven together to create music that has a nostalgic feel, as if it should only be dropped on Vinyl – yet the Bristol-based duo also keeps an effortlessly clean mix on all his productions.

S.Murk has already gained respect from the likes of Billain, Frequent and many other top names from the DnB scene, whilst still remaining fairly unknown. This feels like a crime, given the talent on display in his latest drop The Yellow One! The contrast between tracks ’03 S.P.A.T.E’ and ‘01 Palaver’ shows how diverse S.Murk’s range of ability really is, whilst still creating the same ‘bob’ across the tracks. Track 3 is a dark, underground cut you’d expect to hear in the basement of a record store somewhere across Shoreditch, London. Whereas Track 1 has a catchy vocal sample that chops and changes to carry the bounce across the track. Both, however, contain that old-school style of regurgitating delays, fast breaks and cheeky melodic basslines that you’d be used to if you grew up on Jungle in the early 90’s. It’s an unbelievable project, it really is.

tinyforest

Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, tinyforest is slowly building a monumental name for himself. This artist’s flow and unrelenting sound design will make any dance floor shake. His way of complementing the electronic genre with such bliss and character is truly wonderful and refreshing. His newest release on Below The Surface, ‘takeastep’ is a groovy monster that includes some nasty bass leads, addictive drum patterns, and vocal samples to tie it all together in a dynamic, lush bow. Then you have tracks on his SoundCloud such as ‘soulja boy raises his hand in class’ which will completely have you in a trance. Making you purely addicted to his works. Pushing the electronic trap genre in a beautiful direction. Plus, besides his heavy sound design and drums, the atmospheres swirling throughout his tracks are breathtaking within themselves. Capturing the beauty of his sound and really setting the stage for what he wants to portray! We’re stoked to hear what he has planned for his listeners next!
