There’s not a more compelling story than when Tinaturnup, the supposed 17-year old club prodigy from Denmark was revealed to be the brainchild of DJ Sliink and Nadus, two of the pioneers of Jersey Club. Nadus even expressed that using the Tinaturnup moniker was when he received the most recognition and outreach. This was 7 years ago. We have to do better.

While the story came to the forefront again in the peak of the Black Lives Matter movement back in June 2020, the secret had already been out since at least 2016. The two things we can learn from this? 1) Anonymity does work as marketing. And 2) Racism is still rampant in the music industry.

While we’re always working towards a more progressive and inclusive community, we have to acknowledge this as proof: If you’re white in EDM, it’s easier for you to succeed. Honestly, it feels weird that the first time we’re posting about either DJ Sliink and Nadus in years is because of Tinaturnup. But we thought this story was worthwhile sharing.

On a lighter note, the music “Tinaturnup” made banged. It was hard for me to choose a bootleg for #tbt‘s first edition of the year, but I couldn’t pass on babygirl Aaliyah. This ‘Rock The Boat’ remix flaunts Jersey Club’s signature bed squeaks, bouncey drums, and syncopated claps to make this R&B classic even sexier. We didn’t even know that was possible.

Massachusetts-native Jackson Stell fully embodies the unbridled creative spirit and diverse collaborative nature of an electronic music artist. Dutch-born producer, performer, and guitarist San Holo maintains one of the most extensively spanning creative arcs of any artist in the modern era. Prior to founding the eclectic label bitbird, which furnishes a platform for the softer delicacies of indie and electronic music, San Holo worked considerably with iconic Paris production trio Point Point. Working congruously with one another, in what one might consider the earliest infancy of both artist’s future trajectory, created a variety of opportunities for both direct and indirect collaboration. Of such items, ‘Hiding,’ selected from the second volume of Point Point’s coveted Filet Mignon compilation released in the spring of 2014 provides a primitive glance into the foundation of future bass, while also presenting an opportunity to derive some of the preliminary inspirations of both San Holo and fellow bitbird artist The Nicholas.

Prior to transitioning into current freeform bass-enthused project Champagne Drip, Los Angeles-based Sam Poole produced and performed a variety of dub and intensive drumstep under the alias SPL. While bits and pieces of the former moniker shine through in his current works, there is a perceptible line of distinction between works past and present. Selected from the Balearic Bass EP released via SMOG Records in 2013, ‘Hypnotizing’ presents a unique mutuality between Poole’s past alias and his current sonic efforts, composing a thrilling melody and mesmerizing folds of bass, which looking back, subtly foreshadow the contemporary transition into Champagne Drip.
