Stereofox is not merely seeking to overstate its own virtues by featuring women. With this compilation, Stereofox has reduced its label cut to 20%, with 80% going straight to the producers, and any profits from the vinyl campaign will be donated to charity (collectively chosen by the producers), supporting an organization that helps female creators grow and thrive.

In addition to the strong intent of advocacy with the release itself, the project makes for a vibrant listen, a scintillating escapade into waves of gentle percussion and ebbing instrumentation. The tracks, while all thematically serene, all delve into distinctive cultural and idiosyncratic identities. Elements like the Taiko and Shamisen (on a standout track from Miyuki Kuzuoka) take center stage, replaced with harps, saxophones, guitars, and tranquilizing keys. 

With its global scope and ambitious altruism, the compilation satisfies all facets of the listener experience, providing both a meaningful message and a weightless,  pleasureful listen. One can only hope for more compilations such as these, and perhaps even louder voices for the incredible producers who brought this music to the forefront.

It kicks off with ‘ib2up’ featuring Tennessee emcee’s Tim Gent quick-witted wordplay and merry choppins’ ominous production style. The song is instantly captivating, first grabbing our attention with high-pitched vocal chops and reverberant synths that lead into Tim Gent’s grandiose bars. The beatmaker says, “‘b2up’ started as a hook idea from Tim. I just kept coming back to it after the initial session and tried producing different versions behind it. It went from a hype anthem, to a chill trap beat, and many versions in between. I finally landed on this production on the 6th version of the song when I threw Tim’s acapella over a rap beat I was making, and it finally felt like the song had a home.” The hook’s eerie harmonies bring the track to the next level, representing the people who are just doing “too much.”

Then, merry choppins takes back the mic with ‘to one beat funk.’ Going off of the prior song’s spine-chilling beat, this tune also boasts a darker melody that contrasts the soulful rhythms and vocal samples that choppins intertwines. Reminiscent of Late Night Radio’s Vinyl Restoration and Daily Bread’s Cloud Conductor series, this blend of electro-soul, funk, and hip-hop is incredibly delightful.

Last month, Louis Futon blessed us with the masterpiece that is Couchsurfing. The way the LA-based producer is able to find the perfect balance of modern and vintage sounds, there’s no doubt this album will stand the test of time. It’s the ideal medley of electro-soul, funk, and hip-hop and the artist managed to bring together artists from all over the music scene to collaborate. Whether he’s teaming up with incredible rappers like Armani White, iconic producers like Bad Snacks, or doing it all himself—as per standout track ‘Ms. Intentions’—Couchsurfing is a one-of-a-kind album that the musician holds close to his heart.

Noting that this project was personal to Louis Futon, we wanted to take some time to dive deeper into the album by speaking to the man himself. Re-listen to Couchsurfing while you check out the interview below.

Been doing great! Turns out it was just stomach acid that was causing chest pains. It was crazy to see all these messages coming in from people who had similar health scares. Health is wealth.

Relief. I feel this physical release in my body and my mind whenever I release new music, it keeps me moving forward. It’s been great seeing the positive reception towards it as well.

At a certain point in time, I was just sitting with 20 or so tracks that I felt like couldn’t go together at all. But I thought “What if I could actually tie these all together and make it flow like a journey”. So that’s when I started all the transitions between tracks and actualized the project itself.

Yes. My friends didn’t make me pay rent, so in return, I would buy an ice cream cake for them every Sunday with a different funny message drizzled on it each time. Kinda became a tradition.

You gotta trust your gut and go with the flow. There are going to be uncomfortable and confusing moments, but if you let yourself go through it your future self will thank you.

I caught one of the featured artists on the record, Armani White, performing as a secret special guest at a Good Society show in LA. And I know you’ve actually worked with both of those names before. I notice when you work with someone, you usually continue to find other capacities to continue a collaborative relationship with them. Is there any reason for that?

When I find someone who I love to work with in the studio AND hit it off on a personal level, we stay in each other’s lives and create a lasting relationship. This usually results in new musical collaborations, but it doesn’t have to. Armani and I really get each other because we know our relationship goes beyond music.

There’s nothing like LA. Access to the most amazing musicians/studios in the world, jams happening almost every night, and of course the weather. No plans to move back as of now, LA definitely feels like home.

Louis Futon begins the record with hip-hop and r&b-influenced beats from intro track ‘Crashing’ to ‘Something Strange Is Happening.’ Things pick up with psychedelic ‘Miami’ and ‘Funk Off’ which are reminiscent of beatmakers like Daily Bread and Pretty Lights. We hear our first feature from gospel vocalist Lavance Colley on ‘Turn It Up,’ which ends up being a sexy soul tune that’ll get your heartbeat racing. He continues the tone throughout the record, with instrumental-led production, bringing in horns and woodwinds to elevate the album to a level of artistry we can only appreciate to the highest degree.

I’ve always felt like a creative nomad. It’s hard for me to commit to one style because i’m naturally enced by so many different genres. I wanted to lean into my creative spontaneity and create a project that not only covers the whole spectrum of sounds I like to make, but also feels connected.

The collaborations on the album were definitely standouts for us. We previously reported on ‘Re-Up’ with Armani White, which he dropped earlier as a single from the album. Louis Futon also brings on Bad Snacks and Rob Araujo for the dreamy ‘Sunday Morning,’ which will eradicate Sunday scaries solely by listening to it. quickly, quickly comes on for the majestically cinematic ‘Northeast’ before Louis Futon ends the project with a hopeful ‘This Beautiful World.’

We can’t forget to shine a light on the composer himself. Louis Futon showcases his all-encompassing talent on ‘Ms. Intentions.’ Not only did he produce the song, but he’s also the singer-songwriter on the catchy tune. Alive is a reflection of the need for gratitude of the current moment, enjoyment of what is, and the realization of the actions and steps needed to move through troubling times.

SODOWN

Despite collaborating with various artists, his solo tracks ‘Turn The Lights Out’ and ‘Alive’ were some of my favorite on the project. Both full of raw emotion, seductive vocals, and the producer’s own instrumentality playing saxophone, these two tracks definitely stole the show and prove to have replay power that is off the charts in my own personal playlist.

SoDown also enlists two of my favorite artists in the funk realm, Meghan Hamilton and Manic Focus for the album. Meghan Hamilton’s soulful voice breathes life into SoDown’s psychedelic rhythms in ‘Right On Time.’ Manic Focus collaboration ‘Cliffs’ features more buttery female vocals with Bailey Flores. Focusing more on the bass side, SoDown slows things down with a sax solo that’s to die for.

This track is by far the most forward thinking song I’ve put out. The root of all my music stems from groove and no genre of music does that better than funk. I released a teaser and was astonished by how much support it got. It makes me really happy to see that there is an audience for trap music that is focused on groove rather than aggression. XAVAGE

He’s not wrong. After hearing the teaser, I immediately asked XAVAGE to send it over and I was not disappointed. ‘FUNK’ teases us with a quintessential trap build only to funk us up at the drop. The producer effortlessly blends elements of the two genres to make an innovative and hypnotic tune. Utilizing horns and electric guitar to really put emphasis on its funk influence, XAVAGE invites us to a psychedelic party that you just can’t miss.

A few months before Covid hit we got to see Big Gigantic play this tune live at Red Rocks during their set at the last Rowdytown. We had played it in a few DJ sets ourselves earlier that year while we were still finishing the production on it, but experiencing it alongside 10,000 other people when Big G dropped it was pretty surreal and this song has been a special one for us ever since. I feel like we’ve been waiting to release it forever! So I’m super excited to have this finally come out and with Defunk & Akylla on the track too it actually makes this release 100% Canadian which is something we’re also really proud of.

The Funk Hunters and Defunk add their flavor with bombastic basslines and dynamic drops that stop you in your tracks. This release is so important, not just to me, but to the whole industry. It really sets precedence for everyone in the community to actually practice what you preach. And I’m proud to say Keys N Krates aren’t just loud on social media about what they believe in—they’re also using their art to make the world a better place.

Flips Vol 2 is full of funky fire. The trio produced groovy bootlegs of 3 iconic songs: Zhané’s ‘Hey Mr. DJ,’ Frank Ocean’s ‘Solo,’ and H.E.R.’s ‘As I Am.’ The last time they dropped a flip pack was in June of 2020, at the height of the Black Lives Matter protests. At that time, they also donated all of the proceeds to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. In both of the flip packs, they’ve given to a good cause and they’ve highlighted some of the greatest Black artists in our lifetime.
