WAKAAN Music Festival returns to Mulberry Mountain in Arkansas from September 25th to 29th of this year, rocking a superb lineup that is rife with takeovers and back-to-backs galore. Now in its fourth year, WAKAAN as both a festival and label has helped to platform some of the biggest names in bass music today, many of whom are back once again.

Highlights of this year’s lineup include the likes of Subtronics, who is returning for the first time since 2019. Zeds Dead is making their WAKAAN Festival debut this year for a solo set as well as the first-ever Zeds Dead b2b Liquid Stranger set. Freddy Todd and Of The Trees will be performing as their collaborative BLAAP project. An official 1985 Music takeover will feature label head Alix Perez, along with Torcha, Hyroglifics, and Monty. Barclay Crenshaw is returning after electrifying performances the last two years that helped cement his resurgence as a bass music icon. The duo of jordnmoody and Ujuu will be on stage together as FLORA. As founder of WAKAAN, Liquid Stranger himself is also performing three exclusive sets, including a throwback set with a list of not-yet-announced friends.

There is more to WAKAAN than just the music. The festival features a diverse array of workshops, ranging from such topics as health and wellness to music production. The grounds of Mulberry Mountain are scattered with art installations, merch vendors, games, and more. In particular, this year features the return of Soul Spin Art Gallery, where fans can create their very own custom vinyl records that will be kept on the mountain for years to come.

In the past years that I’ve attended WAKAAN, the crowd energy has been unreal. There is a real, concerted effort on the part of these festival-goers to make friends and inspire each other. I’ve told my life story to a stranger on the way to a Port-a-Potty. I’ve always left with more trinkets than I arrived with. I’ve been handed hors d’oeuvres from people passing by mid-headliner. I’ve played Super Smash Brothers and watched Adventure Time on a screen in the middle of the forest. The sense of community that this festival has is something to behold, and I hope everyone gets to at least once.

If you’d like to purchase a ticket to the festival, you can do so on WAKAAN’s website. Be sure to follow them on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook for more information. In the meantime, you can peep the full festival lineup below!

Visage is the French word for face, with visages being its plural form. Following Visages over the last couple of years has shown that this is the perfect name for the quartet. Multifaceted productions run through the veins of the French artists, with each new single, remix or project showcasing a new skill under the broad umbrella of bass music. Whether it’s a deep dubstep cut laced with grime-leaning vocals, or a soothing liquid drum and bass groove, Visages consistently create crisp and catchy tunes.

Last year, I had the extreme pleasure of catching a Visages live set, where they played grimy deep dubstep cuts (think ‘Hardware’ and their ‘Greengate Adhesive’ remix) for the first half before closing the second half of their set with their usual luscious drum and bass sound. It’s uncommon to find artists who can execute on such different styles at such a high level, yet Visages have shown that their productions know no barriers. Staying true to the essence of their live sets, Visages have recently released the Dol Guldur EP via Alix Perez’s 1985.

The four-track journey through bass music begins with the project’s title track, as the quartet conjure a sinister soundscape before unleashing a meticulous display of Toulousian drum and bass that embodies their sound and pushes it further. ‘Evidently’ follows, with Visages tapping Snowy for an absolutely filthy combination of grungy bass and snappy vocals. The swagger and flow in this second track is among the dirtiest we’ve heard this year, with Visages letting Snowy shine above an earth-rattling beat before taking over the show in the latter half. Switching tempos in ‘Panacea,’ Visages hone in further on their signature with a smooth liquid cut that will have you floating among the clouds with its groovy melody and hypnotizing riffs. For the final track, Visages team up with Monty and Killa P in ‘The Most’ as the producers return to the grimy dungeons of 140 BPM bass to once again demonstrate just how dominant they are with this genre. I still think a Visages and Monty supergroup called Montages would take over North America, but I digress.

The Dol Guldur EP is Visages at their best. Don’t miss it below.

Monty and Visages are among the elite collaborators in the bass music scene. The rate at which they collaborate and the consistent quality of their tracks makes it difficult to understand why they have yet to form a supergroup called Montages. Jokes aside, the Toulouse-based artists have come together numerous times over the last few years, and have recently gained a ton of momentum with tracks such as ‘Hardware‘ and their remix for Boombox Cartel’s ‘Reaper.’ As regulars on Alix Perez’s 1985, Monty and Visages frequently push the boundaries of bass music, both separately and jointly.

Now, the collaborators kick off their 2023 campaign with a monstrous new single on the aforementioned label. The title, ‘Ange,’ which is French for angel, sets the stage for the ethereal and otherworldly experience that the track delivers.

The track opens with a clean and minimal introduction, with raw textures setting the tone for the rest of the track. While it takes over a minute for the drums to arrive, they are crisp and punchy, providing a strong foundation for the other elements of the track. As the piece progresses, it introduces more and more layers, building to a climax that isn’t overpowering, but dreamy and hypnotizing. Difficult to contain within a certain genre, ‘Ange’ displays Monty and Visages’ undeniable chemistry and production prowess, as they deliver another incredible cut. Don’t miss it below.
