Cool, calming tones. Elegant and passionate compositions. These qualities and more are what make 92elm a true warrior throughout the industry. Tackling challenges and overcoming obstacles with might, while serenading his audience with pure bliss. One release at a time, he’s managed to create a formidable energy through his raw and organic skills. From sensational future bass tunes to soothing future beat wonderlands, the aura surrounding his works of art truly touches the hearts of many. Creating a safe haven for all to reside in. Feeling at peace with your mind and spirit.

Lending a hand to many artists such as QUIET BISON, mark veins, and more, his audio engineering power has helped their projects blossom into full bloom. Creating an even more impactful stasis for not only his skills, but their visions as well. He’s even created his own original sample packs for big-time names such as iZotope, Splice, and Origin Sound & Renraku. All while creating his own angelic journeys throughout time.

It’s with our great pleasure, to introduce his very own guest mix and interview. Diving into his background and overall interests, you’ll be blown away by this adventure he’s set his listeners on through this stellar mix of gems.

First off, thank you for taking the time for this interview. How have you been?

I’ve been doing well, thanks! I appreciate you having me.

Tell us about the mix you put together. What can listeners expect?

This mix is meant to be an evolving listening experience -my production is influenced by a wide range of sounds & I wanted this mix to reflect that. I’d say each song I’ve included has a strong melodic pull to it.

Is there a set of goals you’ve created for yourself for the rest of this year?

Loosely, I suppose – I’m co-producing my girlfriend’s album (it’ll be done by the time this interview is out) which we’ve been working on for nearly two years. There’s an entire audiovisual experience to accompany it. Immensely excited to share that! As a general goal for this year, I want to get more involved in producing/engineering for artists in different countries.

How did the 92elm project begin? What’s the significance behind the name?

The first house I grew up in was 92 Elm Street. It’s a tiny, old house in a sleepy Massachusetts suburb that was built in the 1700’s, and in my mind it represents a safe place of unrestricted creativity & exploration. A lot of my creative instincts were formed there as a kid, and it felt like a fitting name for my project. It’s a reminder to myself that I can access that place when I need to.

I think my ignorance of the underlying music theory was actually to my benefit, because I developed a good feel for vibe & groove

Your sense of arrangement and storytelling within your compositions are so smooth and natural. Were you classically trained or self taught?

I’m self-taught! I didn’t know a lick of music theory or how to play an instrument when I first started. I was ripping vinyl onto an MPC-2000 and making raw hip hop beats, emulating producers like DJ Premier & The Alchemist. I think my ignorance of the underlying music theory was actually to my benefit, because I developed a good feel for vibe & groove. But music theory has become a valuable tool in my tool kit.

Being based in Philly, how has the music scene evolved throughout your time living there? And where can you see the scene in the next few years?

Philly has a really rich musical history – there’s always been a diversity of sounds, but the connective tissue is that they all have authenticity & soul. My intro to the scene here was through DIY basement shows, mostly punk, hip-hop & EDM. Honestly, I don’t go to many shows/parties these days, so it’s difficult for me to say where the scene will be in the next few years, but I hope that DIY tradition & eclectic mix of sounds will continue to grow.

I had to practice a lot of restraint & detachment to get the project done before I started to get sick of listening to it.

Your newest EP, Gradients features some of the most cohesive and highly skilled pieces to date for your project. What were some major challenges while creating this? Can we expect more of this style in the future?

Thanks for the kind words! The main challenge was sticking to the original intention of the project. I wanted a break from making full songs & wanted more playfulness from my creative process. As I grew more attached to the tracks, perfectionism started kicking in, so I had to practice a lot of restraint & detachment to get the project done before I started to get sick of listening to it. You can definitely expect more from me in the style of Gradients!

Outside of music, are there hobbies or other interests you’ve been passionate about or want to get into?

I love a good hike in nature, I find being outdoors to be a nice mental & physical reset. I enjoy simple things like cooking & spending time with loved ones. Creatively I want to explore visual arts more, like painting & photography.

Are there any major obstacles you’ve had to overcome throughout your time as 92elm?

Probably similar obstacles that a lot of other creatives have – comparison to my peers, imposter syndrome, etc. I’m getting a better handle on those as time goes on, but I’m not sure if they ever fully disappear.

I get to see how other people are constructing/approaching their music & have gotten a lot of inspiration & knowledge through that.

You’ve taken the time to master some major projects for other incredible artists throughout the years. As well as create your own sample packs for big-time companies. Would you say you’ve learned brand new skills from those experiences to take into your own style?

Absolutely, working on other people’s music has made me a better producer/engineer/human. I get to see how other people are constructing/approaching their music & have gotten a lot of inspiration & knowledge through that. Making sample packs has also helped me – I always end up exploring new sound design techniques with each pack I create. Learning how to make each loop interesting enough for someone to want to sample it is a useful skill.

If you could see yourself in the distant future, what would you like to be doing?

Musically, producing for the Ariana’s & Dua Lipa’s of the world, and the new exciting artists we don’t know about yet. Personally, I’d like to have real stability & fulfillment in my relationships. I’m a simple man.

Any last words or exciting news you’d like to share for the readers and listeners out there?

Co-producing foryu’s album which will be out later this year, it’s an incredible project & a really strong first statement from a new artist, stoked for people to hear it!

There are times when words are sensory overload that complicates emotions rather than evokes them. While they can paint a picture of our experiences, words could be daunting to take in. With Gradients, 92elm sought to alleviate that pressure to examine by permitting us to feel. It’s palliative and airy, aiming to use its breezy Lo-Fi aesthetic to lift your mood the same way pilots use the wind for takeoff.

Known for his future bass sound backed by lush vocals, the Philadelphia producer often layers his vocals an octave lower when paired with the main vocalist. The result is a texture that is ethereal alongside dazzling instrumentation. Despite his song’s cheery nature, there are themes tied into the final product to feel for ourselves. On his last project, Patience, 92elm unwound from a slow, organic sound of fear to utilize both his voice and electronic elements more as he overcame them. It’s a reminder that time heals all but only when the effort is there.

His latest project, Gradients, departs from his usual sound, experimenting more with chill hip-hop elements to create a minimalist aesthetic. Composed of instrumentals, Gradients symbolizes the alluring glimmers of the sun to the dazzling sight of the moon with shades of orange and blue.

From start to finish, the sequencing of the album is intentional. A quick examination of the album cover hints at a day and night cycle. ‘Opal’ is misty and damped, with sharp sensory piercing synths role-playing mother nature. The percussion softly pelts the surface like a leaf falling off a branch: slow, meandering its way around the vast to reach the inevitable. It’s a consistent characteristic of the project. It is littered with percussion instruments from snares, high hats, maracas, glockenspiel, and more fusing to provide energy.

‘Radiate’ is a vaporous highlight of the EP that veers into the late morning. Its uplifting chords support the rest of the instrumentation to sail in the environment as if they are clouds. I especially admire how 92elm tucked the saxophone behind the softness of the drums. Its brightness pokes out ever so slightly to remind you of its presence. ‘Suncatcher”s foundation is slippery keys and drums looped together with synths popping in randomly to create an illusion of movement. True to its name, its slower tempo illustrates the joy of basking in the daylight.

The subtle transition from day to night makes the project feel evasive. By the time the outro track ‘Ripples’ comes on, you wonder where did all the time go as it’s already morning. It feels a tad cinematic and natural, birds acting as background singers as they chirp alongside pristine chords and staccato of the violins. Yet, the track does something I wish was more prevalent throughout Gradients. Halfway into the record, a robotic vocal mutters a melody, but its words are difficult to discern. What is being said is not significant compared to what it supplies. Its inclusion allows the elements around it to slyly relapse to the beginning, where the birds chirp again.

Is it a sign? Informing us how quickly the days go by as the next spears on ahead. A reminder to live in the moment and enjoy what’s around you. Perhaps this is 92elm continuing his attempt to comprehend the concept of time. In a world where BPM, bar counts, and patterns govern, producers are mathematicians who are able to turn numbers into notes. There could be many meanings or none at all, but what Gradients is anything but lingering.

While I closed the past year with some new faces, I’m more than happy to begin this 2021 with a very familiar one. I’ve been following 92elm here on the pages of FUXWITHIT for several years now and collecting this third premiere with him makes me foresee that there will be many more to come. I’m not saying this for personal vanity but because in recent years I have witnessed a constant, inexorable growth of the quality of the project that doesn’t show signs of stopping. Music producer first, then also audio engineer, vocalist, and now even songwriter, 92elm has continued to update and evolve. What’s next? A one-man band?

Jokes aside, ‘Hesitation’ indeed marks a new chapter in the career of 92elm where he fully embraces the role of songwriter and vocalist and shifts away from a pure electronic paradigm encompassing new influences. As the lead single of his forthcoming EP (due to be released at the end of the month), it gives us a first taste of the fusion of styles and sounds we’ll find across the 5-tracks which, as stated by the artist himself, “draws equally from the chord progressions of R&B and the groovy rhythms of hip hop and dance music”. 92elm’s own voice is what welcomes us in the intro of ‘Hesitation’ and takes us through the whole first minute of the song surrounded by a very cozy and dreamlike atmosphere. After this kick-off, I was ready to expect some lush downtempo vibes enriched by an abundant dose of echoes and reverbs, but the surprise I found made my jaw drop. In no way would I ever have expected such a fantastic bouncy, infectious beat followed by an ensemble of soulful synths and vocal melodies. The difference between the two “faces” of the song, one more laidback and one more flashy, is considerable but the alchemy between them is just perfect. 92elm expertly takes us up and down in a rollercoaster of emotions that, even if it’s just a little taste of what we can expect from the EP, definitely raises our expectations.

Stream ‘Hesitation’ below and be sure to keep an eye on 92elm’s socials so you don’t miss any updates about the EP.

I love coincidences and I love perfect timinig even more. That’s why I’m amazed to present this new premiere almost exactly a year after I wrote another one for 92elm. Time has passed since then, we’re all older, but 92elm’s talent hasn’t aged at all. Rather, like wine, it seems that it’s getting better and better with time. Not that his previous works weren’t good. Not at all. The series of singles that he has carefully released in the past 12 months are super classy stuff. But with Would You I think he has made another jump forward. It has taken the best from his best releases and mixed together in a stellar cocktail.

Take 8 parts of cinematic vibes, 5 parts of lush, pulsating synths, 2 parts of vibrant vocals (shout out to Yosie for the superb performance), add some ice, a generous topping of excellent sound design et voilà: magic happens. The result is a classic 92elm fashioned song but with a sweet pop twist that brings a new, very appreciated, flavour.

Maybe I’m exaggerating, but I’m convinced that, with the right placements, Would You has the potential to round up an insane amount of plays on streaming platforms and YouTube streams, and skyrocket 92elm’s name to the places he deserves.

Lately there’s an exciting flourish of producers who have made their first appearances behind the microphone. First chromonicci, then Chuck Sutton, soon to come Laxcity and, right here, right now, 92elm. If you’re not familiar with this East Coast producer, you certainly are not a SoundCloud regular and for now, just know that this name is a first-rated one at the FUXWITHIT office.

‘No Love’ is the worthy follow-up to his two previous brilliant releases ‘Charm’ and ‘Honest’, and is the exact kind of stuff I like to call a post-future-pop-ballad: in other words, cool, smooth, touching, electronic music. 92elm’s trademark lush synths delivers once again creating an idyllic atmosphere, an antidote against the deleterious frenzy that stresses us everyday. Like the sunrise puts an end to the nocturnal agitation of the sea, ‘No Love’ is a piece of music that wipes out useless fears and brings serenity just from the first notes, surrounding and cuddling the listener with its golden light and silky smooth vibe. In addition, the unexpected mournful vocal section adds a slight touch of summertime sadness, which donates the final tasty bittersweet flavour to the whole composition.

Download ‘No Love’ here and don’t forget to check out 92elm’s latest sound pack too.

Beyond genres or styles, a wider parameter of distinction I use to sort music is the the impact it has on my inner-self. I mean, there are songs that fit exactly in the mood I’m in at a specific moment, that connects with the flow of my emotions, amplyfing them in a more complete experience. And then there are songs that instead bring a radical swing to the situation, building from zero their own world. 92elm and Max Fry’s latest joint-venture is precisely a great and clear example of the last kind.

When it kicks in, ‘Charm’ makes a clean sweep of every other noise around you, it freezes any idea, thought, anything. It’s like the life and the world are paused and everything all around you falls into a stasis, covered by a golden light. A sense of peace and harmony spread in every direction bringing, for 3 brief minutes, a slice of paradise on our anguished planet.

Shoutout to 92elm and max fry for this totally unexpected treasure. You can grab it for free here.
