So, I’m over a week late with this write-up, not because I committed to having it done on release day, but because I wish I shared my thoughts on this project as soon as it came out. Mea culpa. However, after listening to ALEPH‘s debut album EGO DEATH on repeat for the greater part of the last week, the true genius behind the project continued to manifest itself with every listen.

From getting a taste of EGO DEATH with the first single, ‘POLYMER,’ to the subsequent release of the title track that spans a whopping ten-minutes, listeners were certain that EGO DEATH was going to be an exquisite expedition through bass music. Even with this early knowledge, though, ALEPH has exceeded expectations in his twelve-track journey. With song titles depicting the various stages of life and death, to the multitude of soundscapes painted throughout the fifty-minute narrative, ALEPH flawlessly evokes conflicting sensations of hope and despair, and joy and sorrow.

EGO DEATH reminds listeners to get back up after failing. It’s about the rebirth of a soul after difficult times. Interestingly, ALEPH opts to not use vocals to conjure these feelings, but instead to focus on his incredible ability to manipulate sounds and create soul-stirring textures. EGO DEATH is impossible to categorize within a single genre as it draws influence from everything from future bass to house and beyond, all seamlessly tied together into one transcendental listening experience.

The following words from ALEPH about the project really stand out. “I think a final point I’d like to offer up is that regardless of where the story ends, there is always a place beyond it. I’ve always loved to think about the unwritten narratives that follow a story’s conclusion, about what happens with the characters and places after everything is said and done. I hope that those who take the time to listen to this record will consider that side of things now that this part of my story has ended.”

Dive into EGO DEATH from start to finish below.

The first single from ALEPH‘s long-awaited debut album is finally here. Released via Renraku, ‘POLYMER’ erases all notions of song structure, genres and boundaries, and instead explores unfamiliar arrangements to mold an otherworldly journey. In ALEPH’s words, “I’ve abandoned genre and template long ago and will always strive to write music not bound by tradition, culture, or structure. I have an infinite canvas of sound to paint with, I just want to see how far I can take it.”

Doing just that, the talented artist draws influence from a plethora of musical outlets to create a vivid, electrifying piece that only builds further anticipation for what’s to come. Peculiar strings in the introduction create immediate intrigue, as listeners are left wondering where ‘POLYMER’ is headed sonically. Soon after, ALEPH pummels one with bass and metallic percussion to add intensity to the piece without omitting musicality. Continuing to add layers of meticulous effects and building upon the hyper-futuristic textures, the artist keeps the energy alive for the duration of the track, closing it out as beautifully as it opened.

“The start of a story that I’ve been wanting to tell for a very long time is finally beginning to unfold. See you on the other side,” says ALEPH. We’re itching in anticipation. Don’t miss ‘POLYMER’ below.

Together, though, they are a totally different unit, organically meshing their distinct sounds to deliver true masterpieces. The former have recently impressed with their incredible dual single ‘Serpent Grail / Sosen Yahn,’ while the latter has done so with his mind-melting BREAKING AND ENTERING EP. Now, they have joined forces on two genre-defying singles, the first, ‘Inbetween.’ having been released on August 7th and the second, ‘Semblance,’ out today, both via the boundary-pushing MAD ZOO.

As a whole, ‘Inbetween’ and ‘Semblance’ defy genres and encapsulate a plethora of them all in one. ‘Inbetween’ represents “a juxtaposition of shimmering melody, experimental bass, and jazz-inspired rhythmic elements,” in the words of ALEPH. From its serene soundscapes, to its high-energy sections, to its goosebump-inducing future garage bridge, ‘Inbetween’ is as elegant and inventive as it gets, demonstrating Ekcle and ALEPH’s unparalleled musical prowess. ‘Semblance’ is a further exemplification of this statement, with the artists packing a tantalizing amount of sounds, styles and textures into the intricate piece. Playing on everything from future bass to drum and bass, the trio of creatives deliver glistening melodies, groovy basslines, and jaw-dropping percussion to hook listeners from start to finish.

If you’re looking for novel electronic music, look no further than ‘Inbetween’ and ‘Semblance.’
