The Catching Z’s (Remixes) is a pleasant fever dream come to life. A calm ocean flowing with bright and brilliant tones and rhythms. But what can fans expect through this soothing journey of sound? First up, Zeds Dead included an acoustic version of their notable track, ‘i think you’re cool’ featuring Jenna Pemkowski. Her light and airy vocals can fill any empty garden with pure flora. Letting off pure peace all around.

Then next up, we receive a truly unexpected collaboration remix. IMANU and Quiet Bison take the stage with their own bonded creation. If you love deep atmospheres and playful sound design, this one is right up your alley. Flipping the original into a glitchy house wonderland was nothing but genius and such a smart route to take. Finally, to end things on a very high note, A-BO jumps into the mix to bless our ears with his remix of ‘lost birds’ featuring Elliot Moss! With the original being relaxed and laid back, you won’t know what the artist will surprise you with. But hearing just the first second, you already know it’s going to be a good time. Transporting the audience onto an open rooftop looking over a glistening city in the night, the producer hits us with a funky house arrangement, blissful chord creations, and a wavy bass line. Working together to commemorate Zeds Dead’s impact on electronic music as well as his journey through time. It’s a remix you’ll no doubt have on repeat for years to come. Bringing nothing but positive and healing energy to anyone who comes in contact. A perfect way to conclude this EP.

The instrumental works on the project are equally powerful. ‘phucket sunrise’ presents a mean yet psychedelic trip-hop feel driven by strong percussion. Just as you think it’s about to drift away it comes back with a deep dubstep drop that pushes it to the darkest and dirtiest depths.

Zeds Dead started their first label, Deadbeats, and brought so many interesting artists and creatives in electronic music to the forefront. Now, fives years later, the duo are launching their new brand Altered States label which will explore electronic, chill and downtempo sounds. The first project on this new trajectory, Catching Z’s will be a 13-track mixtape of completely original music from the duo and ‘late night drive’ is the lead single off this exciting new enterprise.

Zeds Dead spin out ‘late night drive’ by letting it sprawl out and up to the four minute mark at a leisurely pace- there’s nothing that is rushed on this track. Out of the gate, with a clip of an old-timey vocal that asks “Say, don’t you think it’s strange…” the nostalgia hits hard. As the vocal fades out, the piano fades in with an eerie tension in its melody. The track builds in complexity, adding in the pulse of a kick drum and snares, and wisps of synths and vocals curve together in the background.  As the layers languidly bleed together, a plume of bass rises among them. With each build up and deliberate drop, the bass throbs brightly against the shimmering synths; it’s almost like the sound was made for a reinterpretation of a classic ballet as its easy to see the sway and bow of dancers to the theatrical rhythms.

What this all adds up to is a dramatic, electronic soundscape that expresses the emotion of driving down a familiar road, on your way home, through a crisp night; it glides and simmers, but always feels steady. It feels impressionistic and sharp, like smell that ignites a memory you did not know you had.
