Last year, Aminé delivered one of our favorite records of 2020, Limbo. Since then, the Portland rapper has remained pretty quiet, only releasing the deluxe version of the album and appearing on the soundtrack for Space Jam: A New Legacy since then. But now, Aminé is back with an energetic new track, ‘Charmander,’ where he plays with new sounds and shows us a completely different side to him.

He tells Apple Music, “After the release of Limbo I took some time to experiment and challenge myself to create in ways I hadn’t before—exploring different textures and tempos without any expectations, ‘Charmander’ was the first product of that period that felt natural while still being at a completely different BPM than any of my previous work.” To help out with his sonic expedition into new territories, Aminé enlists the help of dance music legend Lido. The Norwegian producer brings his magical touch, injecting drum n bass to the beat, matching Aminé’s playful energy exquisitely.

While we’re obsessed with Aminé’s signature sound, hearing something utterly unexpected with ‘Charmander’ was a nice surprise. We’re hyped to see that Aminé is one of the artists pushing for innovation and experimentation in rap music. And if the new wave is bringing genres like DnB and Garage into the mainstream, we’re down to hop on the bandwagon.

Aminé even comes equipped with a music video, broadcasting the track’s childlike enthusiasm in visual form. He even calls back to ONEPOINTFIVE, inviting social media star Ricky Thompson for a cameo.

The Portland-proud rapper uses the album to pay tribute to his hometown and his come-up. Today, Aminé drops a new music video for ‘Woodlawn’ that shows everyone exactly what he loves about his city.

Woodlawn is a park in Northeast Portland and also happens to be the main location for the music video. In the video, Aminé and his crew pull up decked out in Limbo merch, down to the COVID-friendly masks. (His merch is all available on his website and I have a pair of Limbo sweatpants, myself!) The squad brings high energy and enthusiasm, which sets the tone for what we’re about to see next. The rapper spends the next few minutes showing us his favorite local spots in style. He’s shown cruising around the city in sports cars, ATVs, and snowmobiles. But he always references his roots and can be seen sporting Portland Trailblazers gear and a Woodland Park t-shirt throughout the video.

Portland natives are sure to relish in this visual tribute to their city. You can watch Aminé’s ‘Woodlawn’ music video now below.

This may be a bold statement, but Aminé‘s Limbo is immaculate. Some of us can remember the first time ‘Caroline’ hit the SoundCloud popular page 4 years ago, and the rapper hasn’t slowed down since. Limbo is just another elite addition to his discography of albums, joining 2017 Good For You and 2018 ONEPOINTFIVE. With all the headassery that is 2020, Limbo is the light…

With all the headassery that is 2020, Limbo is the light at the end of the tunnel.

Adam Aminé Daniel, famously known as Aminé, knows how to be playful. But this record definitely shows a serious side to the Portland native. Time and time again, hip-hop proves to be a poignant commentary on current events, and Limbo is no different. In an interview with Highsnobiety, Aminé spoke about what the album means to him:

The title came from where I’m at in my life. There are two meanings behind it. I feel like I grew up thinking that once I achieved one level, the next level would be easier to achieve. But as I’ve grown, I’ve come to realize that with every level that I achieve, every level gets harder, just like the game of limbo. It just doesn’t seem to change for me, and it’s honestly made me feel like I’m completely in limbo. I thought the older I get, the wiser I’d get. But I’m figuring it out.

aminé

Limbo doesn’t go without incredible collaborations. It features Young Thug, Vince Staples, Summer Walker, and more. He even pays tribute to Rihanna, and Kobe Bryant, who’s death hugely affected him. The album itself is narrated by his friend, Jak Knight, who is known for his work on Black-ish.

Now is usually the part where we list some standout tracks, but as stated before, the album is perfect. If you want insight into Aminé’s journey, it’s best to listen to it in its entirety. You won’t regret it.

The state of rap’s self-awareness is at an all-time high. Over the past week alone, we’ve seen Drake drop two tracks calling back both Eminem’s ‘Superman’ and Jay-Z’s ‘Song Cry.’ Shortly after, Lil Uzi Vert’s ‘That Way’ channeled turn-of-the-millennia boy group Backstreet Boys’ ‘I Want It That Way.’ Aminé’s ‘Shimmy’ is yet another throwback inspired cut that decidedly looks to mash pieces of ODB’s classic into a raw track fitted for wear in the 2020’s.

It doesn’t feel too long ago that Aminé casually drawled, “Gimme OPB for my ODB, these APC, do your ABC’s, I’m a young dread-head with anxiety” on ‘Reel It In.’ But after a year’s absence, Aminé’s ‘Shimmy’ hits with an amplified sharpness that shows the Portland lyricist leaning into a more aggressive sound helmed by Boi1da, Vinylz, and Pasqué.

Still, the humorous spirit of Ol’ Dirty Bastard is alive in Amine’s commitment to lines like “I got a whip that’s blacker than the nigga from Allstate.” Lines like this sit in the spontaneous headspace of the eternal freestyle, where nothing is overthought and breezily delivered. This is the area where both ODB and Aminé really shine, and like ‘Reel It In,’ this track as a single hooks the ear through its ODB love – even going so far as sampling ODB’s vocals and drawing inspiration from Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version for the song’s artwork.

Compared to Amine’s prior pop rap hits like ‘Reel It In’ or ‘Caroline,’ this track may not have a shared universality – time will tell. As a track paying homage to one of the greats in hip hop, this one knocks with a familiar brashness that Amine is well suited for.
