Although a large portion of my writing tends to focus on electronic music, hip-hop and rap have always been my first love. I fell in love with the genre 20 years ago and it’s one of the few things that’s remained constant over the greater part of my life. One of the elements that always made rap so special is the storytelling aspect. A good writer can bring you into their world and take you on an epic adventure. To celebrate this dimension of the art form, I’ve put together a playlist that showcases some of the greatest storytelling rap songs of all time. The list ranges from raw street tales, to emotional and personal. We’ve got songs that personify the genre as a women, take you into the mind of a terrorist, and follow a dollar bill. There’s classic cuts from the likes of Warren G and Nate Dogg, Ice Cube, Slick Rick, Nas, Common and Biggie. Underground favourites like Apathy, Louis Logic and Cunninnlynguists. And of course, we’ve got tracks from some of the best new artists like J. Cole, Kendrick, Vic Mensa, Logic and Your Old Droog. Noticeably absent from the list in Jay Z. This is due to the fact that his music isn’t available on Spotify or he’d have a ton of entries on this.

Apathy Links Up With Twista & Bun B For ‘Moses’

It’s been over a decade since Apathy dropped his debut album Eastern Philosophy. If you haven’t heard the project go listen to it right now. It still stands as one of the best underground rap albums of the past ten years. Back in 06′ Apathy was one of my favourite rappers; his disdain for the mainstream, intelligent lyricism and storytelling skills made him undeniably ill to any underground hip-hop head. As time progressed and I became more entrenched in electronic music, I began to lose sight of the underground rap scene including Apathy and his Demigodz crew. This week my inner hip-hop head was awaken when I heard Apathy had connected with rap legends Twista and Bun B. On ‘Moses’ each rapper takes turns going in over a raw beat produced by Apathy himself. The track serves as reminder of Ap’s intense lyrical prowess, Twista’s next level flow and Bun’s mic presence. Seeing Apathy alongside artists of this stature only helps to illustrate the fact that he is an underground legend. His new album Handshakes with Snakes is set to drop June 10th and we can’t wait to see what else he’s got in store. Listen to ‘Moses’ below and checkout the tracklist for the album.
