Now the two artists have joined forces for ‘Shut Shit Down’ and it’s exactly what you’d hope for. Off the first few notes, you can already tell it’s going to be a smash. The melody is off kilter and addictive, the bounce is beyond booming, and the percussion is peak. The pitched-down hook and exotic vocal samples cement TroyBoi’s signature while leaving room for Armani White room to shine. While Louis Futon first garnered recognition for his nostalgia-inducing remixes of popular songs (just look at his most popular tracks on Soundcloud), the producer has proven that his original tracks stand on their own. And he also shows his versatility by being a great hip-hop beatmaker, constantly working with rappers in a way that most electronic music producers don’t get right.

‘Re-Up’ can show you exactly what I’m saying. Although Louis Futon is great at bringing the 70s to the modern age through his soulful melodies, he instead teams up with Armani White, staying true to the rapper’s sound and showcases his craft. I don’t think that it detracts from who Louis Futon is as an artist, but instead shows what magic can be made when there’s authentic synergy between two musicians.

Louis Futon says, “Re-Up is a song we wrote together in my mom’s basement a couple years ago. Contrary to living in my mom’s basement however, this song has swag. It has a pocket that makes you want to bounce and bob your head throughout the entire track. It has a dark tone to it that we had a lot of fun exploring.”

But if you’re looking for something that’s more true to the Louis Futon signature sound, side B of the single, ‘Amoeba’ has you covered. It works with ‘Re-Up’ due to its hip-hop beat integration, incorporating rhythms reminiscent of Elaquent, and adding funky horns and strings throughout.

The song started off with me sampling my guitar strings as a percussive instrument leading into an intricate drum pocket paired with a plucky bass. I wanted to make something that takes you through an epic journey.

It took me years to try and rid myself of the guilt of the house fire of 2006. As a preteen, it was hard conceptualizing that a problem couldn’t be fixed or lives lost couldn’t be found again. In 2020, I battled that same depression in person, on the roof fighting my problems until I couldn’t anymore. The cover represents the person I wish I was during both fires.

The EP gets deep quickly, starting with a moving melody called ‘Too Many Angels’: a tribute to the four family members he lost in the first fire. ‘Watch Yourself’ is more of an upbeat track that features jazzy horns and a hard-hitting beat. But it stays true to the project’s theme through the music video, where he dresses up as a firefighter, embodying the person he has always wanted to be.

‘Danny Mac’ is a fun ode to his brother that looks on the bright side of a dark situation. When they were charged for arson, Dan was arrested and detained for 2 months although not at fault. Armani tells AllHipHop, “In a year, Dan went from an ex-convict trying to get his feet on the ground to wearing Dior sneakers like their gym shoes to go get lunch at Ruth’s Chris.”

He continues with family homages with heartfelt tune ‘Melinda’—named after his cousin—before closing out the EP with the uplifting ‘Grateful.’ By the end of Things We Lost In The Fire, you’ll learn so much about Armani White and how important family means to him. His sonic streams of consciousness are so raw and emotive, giving life to his past experiences so that every listener can feel it.

We can tell this project must have been a healing journey, and we’re so thankful he shared his story with us.

The beat is jazzy hip-hop perfection, BXRBER’s vocals are as stunning and addictive as always and Armani White adds just the right sauce to swag it out.
