About two weeks ago my homie mentioned the name G-Eazy and called that he would be next up. After tearing through his online catalog and debut album, I’m convinced.

It’s not an eazy (see what I did there?) task to come up, create a grassroots fan-base and turn that into a commercially profitable rap career these days. Especially without a deal. I mean, everyone may think it is. All it ever takes is one song right? Wrong. It takes a lot more than that. When everyone can easily dig through the url’s (rather than crates) and find all of your joints, they can easily make the call that you’re just a one-hit wonder likely to fade and never to be heard of again until Dr. Drew’s Celebrity Rehab 10 or some shit (too harsh?). It’s true though.

What I’m trying to say is that, G-Eazy is next up because of how he’s perfected his brand and even more importantly, the kid from the Bay Area makes some dope ass music. I mean, this is good hip hop shit. He’s got everything for you to play. G can be great lyrically and his approach and delivery on records really shines through. His widespread influence from music makes him incredibly versatile. This kid reminds me a lot of Drake and his So Far Gone days. G-Eazy is right at the cusp of cracking into the mainstream and taking it for hostage. I mean, obviously this is mostly opinion but it’s hard to tell me otherwise. G-Eazy has amassed more than 140,000 SoundCloud followers and an average of 1 million plays on each song. Plus with the recent release of These Things Happen that’s currently sitting pretty at #3 on the Hip-Hop/Rap iTunes charts, which happens to feature Bay Area God, E-40, and joining Wayne and Drake on tour, G-Eazy is making all the right moves to propel himself into mainstream success.

Below I’ve added a mini-mix that includes a few tracks off of the album which is now available for download on iTunes. See what I’m super hype about and listen for yourself. Calling it now, I Mean It, Been On and Lotta That; though they’ve been out for a while, are going to become summer staples. G-Eazy does it – and does it well.

“you rappers just talk a bunch/ stress me out, I chop a dutch/

weak rappers try to bite the sound, but my style is hard to munch…”

LISTEN: These Things Happen (Mini-Mix)

Early last spring unknown Twerk/Trap duo TWRK set the internet on fire, dropping 3 huge tracks out of nowhere within the span of week. They first posted their remix to Diplo & Lazerdisk Party Sex – Set It Off, followed by their bootleg of Koreless – MTI, and then released their own track Living Room (feat. Dan Gerous). The latter features a chopped vocal sample from Snoop Dogg’s 90’s classic Gin & Juice and samples from Eve’s – Let Me Blow Your Mind. The way they combined the two samples with their signature bouncy (100 bpm) sound is upbeat, infectious and refreshing. Three back-to-back impressive releases had everyone wondering who the hell TWRK was? It was later revealed that TWRK is the collaborative effort of Benzi & Dj Esentrik.

Building on their success they did a remix for UZ and CRNKN and collaborated with 4KORNERS. TWRK soon became well known for their ability to sample rap tracks and flip them into booty shaking bangers. One of the best examples (and my favourite tracks from them) is when they flipped Juvenile’s – Nolia Clap to create NOLIA (see below). Another huge stand out track for TWRK is their smash BaDINGA! Where they flipped K7’s – Come Baby Come (the original video is a must watch. It feature choreographed dance numbers by a rap group).

TWRK closed the year off strong doing a Diplo and Friends mix, a remix for Diplo’s revolution EP, a Wiz Khalifa Remix, and remix of Kanye West’s classic hit ‘Flashing Lights’. The Kanye remix is beautifully done keeping it just true enough to the original while adding heavy bass and their signature bouncy sound. 2013 was massive year for TWRK and we look forward to having our minds blown by their upcoming efforts. If you like what you heard follow them on Twitter, Facebook and Soundcloud or just be sure to check back here.

Personally, I don’t dabble too much out of the Hip Hop/Rap realm but when Trap exploded onto the mainstream music scene it was extremely hard to ignore. Now, I’m constantly looking for fresh Trap music. A perfect combination of Hip Hop buzz lyrics, heavy bass, synths and snares that will slap you silly. There are a slew of producers out there professional and amateur alike and as a result there is a massive amount of Trap available for consumption. That being said, its become difficult to stand out from the crowd and differentiate oneself as an artist. Through some research I was doing for another one of my posts I found a producer whose music I automatically gravitated towards.

Sinjin Hawke. Young blood hailing from Barcelona, Spain with a handful of tracks that bump hard in your car. I immediately looked up his SoundCloud and started going through his tracks. This up-and-coming producer has a few gems on his hands which are sure to set the clubs on fire. One of my favourite tracks is the one that I first heard, “Three Fine Hoes”. The pick up, slow down and drop had me hooked. Peep the track below.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/107373595″ params=”color=166ced&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Upon further investigation, I found that Hawke has a decent following in the 20 thousands that has been supporting his music for more than a year, but also that he’s been touring throughout Europe. Sinjin Hawke also has a pretty great ear for music. One of his tracks that I find to be bananas with regard to production is “Prom Night”. Listen for yourself.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/79818916″ params=”color=166ced&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Now this track is almost a year old but if this is any indication of what we can expect from Sinjin Hawke, then we can definitely expect some great beats to bump to. In more recent Hawke news, Just Blaze and the Barcelona native collaborated on a track together for the Red Bull Music Academy. Check our post on that here and peep the track.

I’m putting Sinjin Hawke on our Watch List as an artist to watch for this year. He’s got some heat and if you don’t believe me check out one of his latest tracks and the honorable mentions list.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/124017185″ params=”color=166ced&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Honorable Mentions
The Dream – Fancy (Sinjin Hawke Bootleg)
DJ Khaled – I’m On One (Sinjin Hawke Bootleg)
Ian Isiah – Private Party (Prod. by Sinjin Hawke)

I stumbled onto Sydney, Australia’s Wave Racer at the end of last year and was instantly impressed. His music is upbeat, bouncy and has just the right amount of heavy bass. It’s so upbeat that it’s hard to listen to one of his tracks without a smile your face. The way he combines beautiful synths with distorted vocal samples and heavy bass creates a soundscape matched by few. The first track that put me on Wave Racer was his remix of Cosmo’s Midnight – The Dofflin. The song samples Aaliyah’s – Are You That Somebody. Wave Race bends the vocals perfectly to fit the upbeat track so that they are just within recognition. Were it not for Timbaland’s “Uh-huh” I may not have even been able to recognize the sample.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/108768473″ params=”color=166ced&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

His Remix of Panama’s – Always is quite possibly his best work. He takes the song in a completely new direction. As soon you hear the “d-d-down” you know you in for a treat, but with Wave Racer his sounds are never anything you can predict.

Rock U Tonight is another huge track. It starts with a beautiful melody then builds into a glitch synth heavy drop with distorted sped up vocals reminiscent of Daft Punk. The song is sure to have “Let Me Rock You Tonight” playing through your head all day.

If you like what you’ve heard, check out his Soundcloud page for even more dope sounds. 2013 was break out year for Wave Racer and I don’t expect him to slowdown any time soon. So be on the lookout for more serotonin inducing tracks in 2014.
