Giving us a dose of groove and funk, Gehena And PRZM have joined together to bring us ‘Watcha Gon’ Do.’ A track which will turn any dance floor into a packed and lively environment! Filled with ear candy and intoxicating patterns. Gehena has been stopping at nothing from fulfilling his destiny as a musician. His swift and addicting tracks have made a huge impact on the underground. Capturing the attention of many and forming a strong bond to his art. From releases on Jadū Dala, Partica Artist Group and more, his vision only grows brighter and stronger with each release.

As for PRZM, his grimy and forward-thinking sound design has pushed crisp raw energy into his fan base. The power his style holds is something truly special and unique. Separating him from the rest. Taking over the scene with great might. And releasing on brednbutter, Presently Lifted and more has only charged him up to push harder for a greater outcome in his career. So when you put these heavy hitters together, you’ll hear nothing but nasty flows and passionate quality.

‘Watcha Gon’ Do’ is a glorious trap classic. It captures the pure essence of both of their styles combined into one. From playful percussion to impactful sound design, there’s a ton of surprises you’ll find with each listen. Making anyone become addicted to the vibe surrounding this piece of art. Everything works together in a wavy and easy going motion. Its’ whimsical characteristics and aura makes the track shine with might. Both styles intertwine perfectly and never feels one-sided. A perfect and fun experience for anyone looking for new fresh talent. No matter where you are, you’re for sure getting any party started when you throw this on. So make sure to go show your upmost support by streaming ‘Watcha Gon’ Do’ everywhere via Below The Surface and producers grab the sample pack.

Proving to be well worth the wait, ‘Hollow’ is an absolute monster. The ghostly opening is beefed up with powerful drums and stirring synths. The first drops pair snapping percussion with video game inspired sounds that set the tone. Where this one really exploded though is in the second drop. The “god damn” vocals in the build up serve as a warning for what is about to ensue. It’s an all out onslaught of brutal bass, dizzying sounds and punch you in the chest percussion. This is the type of heat that’ll cause thermometers to explode. God damn is right. The project further proves why KUREI is next up and we are excited to premiere our favourite song off the project, ‘Lounge,’ which fittingly sees him reuniting with Lua once more.

“The vibe of the track and the whole EP was more of a musical/melodic flex, something you could chill at home to but also something that would go off live, kind of a showcase of some completely different styles than anyone’s heard from me,” KUREI tells us about the release.

Soothing keys and distant vocal bends create a breezy atmosphere in the opening. As the drums kick in the mellow feel begins to ramp up. The bass hits with KUREI’s signature style, wonky and heavy, while the melody keeps things laid-back and vibey. The break feels like kicking back in a hammock overlooking the water before the final drop slides you back onto your feet. Experimental bass, trap and future bass dance under sunlight as ‘Lounge’ evolves and expands. Whether you’re looking to chill out or turn up to a knocking groove, this is definitely the move. Listen below.

There is a multitude of SoundCloud collectives that are all striving to highlight the underground and discover the undiscovered. One that stands out above the rest is Below The Surface, being they are not just a collective but also a family. The goal and intentions behind this label are on par with the FUXWITHIT brand, and that is to promote quality content and the music we love.

Going behind the curtains of the music industry containing hard work and dedication with an understanding of streaming service algorithms, Below The Surface has navigated into a position allowing them to escalate to the top of the experimental trap scene. Today they bring yet another producer worthy of being placed on your artists to watch radar, hot mess. Best known for his flips, Washington D.C. native arrives with his first label release titled ‘Wrong‘.

hot mess has a total of five tracks on his SoundCloud with over 2k followers and his tracks boasting well above 60k plays. All of these however are flips, meaning the delivery of ‘Wrong’ is a huge milestone for this rising producer. Not only is this his first original, it is also being released through one of the hottest underground trap labels. This track embodies a proper tone for the subculture of this genre.

The design is pristine and meritorious, as well as acting as a perfect test for your sub woofers. The traditional trap snares and 808s are overlaid with intrinsic wobbles creating a 3D effect. It contains elements that provide a background structure while pushing different sounds to the foreground of your attention. If this is any sign of a precursor to future original releases, hot mess will be sitting with the big dogs in no time. Grab that fresh free download here.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Today marks the annual celebration to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla. For many it’s a day of good food, dancing and drinking. For bass producer Adiidas, it’s the perfect day to embrace his Hispanic roots and do something special for his people. That something special is a wild new bass banger entitled ‘Maria Maria’. The track is named after his grandmother and sees him sampling ‘El Mariachi Loco’. If you’re expecting infectious Mariachi music clashing against dark and dirty bass, then you’re right on the money. The talented Lake Tahoe-based producer somehow manages to blend the sounds together perfectly. “My main goal was to create a famous Mexican song that people could vibe and surprise them with something nasty. The weirder the better,” Adiiidas tell us.

Only Adiidas could take us from a Mexican fiesta to a dungeon rave within the same track. Additional spanish samples exclaiming “look at all our fans. We are the good looking guys in Mexico” only serve as the icing on the cake on this one.

Jerremy Laesser, better known by his producing alias THRPY, has been a consistent player in the bass music realms recently, between garnering massive support through his releases on Emengy, Phuture Collective, Sleeveless Records, and Saturate Records just to name a few, along with creating both Above & Below the Surface labels. Harnessing a unique approach to fusing traditional trap-style formations with punchy, grimy bass lines has quickly earned him far-reaching praise and recognition including playing at last year’s Lost Lands sound camps and at this year’s Saturate Records SXSW showcase. Now, he’s back with a new release on Below the Surface entitled ‘Top Shottas’, an immensely energetic and stylistic song sure to please both trap heads and fans of more experimental works.

The first thing that you’ll notice about ‘Top Shottas’ is just how hard hitting the kicks are, making a supremely satisfying thud on any decent sound system. Next, you’ll be roped in by the impressive snare work and full-bodied 808’s, before Laesser viciously slaps your ear drums with a veritable waterfall of crushing bass. Adding in little audible treats like gun shots and a satisfying “ahh” sample resembling someone sipping a lemonade on a hot summer day, creates tangible space and keeps the audience guessing. This is a fantastic menagerie of trap influences, hollow wub sections, and thunder clapping kicks that culminate in a delicious feast of sonic delicacies. 2019 is sure to be a massive year for Laesser between his own self releases and the never-ending stream of fire content from his labels.

Check out ‘Top Shottas’ for yourself below!

The Slow Roast release was one of my favorite tracks of the year and still slaps to this today. Since then, THRPY has continued to impress with stellar collabs alongside DECAP, DJ Ride, L*O*J and more. We had also had the pleasure of premiering his brain-bending bass epic ‘BrainDrops’ last year. If that wasn’t enough, the talented producer is the mind behind Below The Surface, a record label that has been helping to define the sound of the underground for the past two and a half years. A friend and fan of FUXWITHIT, it’s overdue for us to connect with THRPY for an exclusive Guest Mix and interview. The mix is a true showcase of his diverse talents. It’s 30+ minutes of all his own productions and is packed with unreleased heaters. If you’ve been wondering what to expect from THRPY in 2019, this is your answer. As for the interview, we discuss what drives him to create, his dreams, Below The Surface and more. Check it out below.

What was your goal in putting this mix together?

I absolutely love FUXWITHIT and when I was asked to do a mix I was stoked. Traditionally I would record a mix of some originals and tracks from my labels and friends. For this mix I decided on doing something I’ve never done before. I’ve included only original tracks, mostly unreleased and since my inspiration has been taking me all over the place creatively I’ve just focused on showcasing my new stuff instead of making a seamless mix.

I was a b-boy and competed professionally which eventually guided my love for music and beats.

What drives you to make music?

Well my whole life I’ve looked for creative outlets. From a young kid I was a b-boy and competed professionally which eventually guided my love for music and beats. I produced mostly hip-hop for a number of years while also going to raves and dancing. As my hobby got more serious I started to blend sounds that inspired me. Now I guess my sound is an EDM/hip-hop potpourri.

Are you able to share any production tips or secrets related to how you make your tracks so banging?

Yes, I’ve learned a lot from my peers. One thing focusing on making your drums knock. One big tip is learning to use sidechaining, compression and a soft clipper.

There’s a ton of unreleased tunes in the mix. What are your release plans for 2019?

My goal this year is mainly growing my labels Above and Below The Surface. I’d like to create an outlet for other amazing underground producers to shine and succeed. As for my music I’ve been creating so much and my goal is to drop one track per month focusing heavily on Spotify. I’d love to play more shows/festivals but I’m currently working full-time as well to afford living in the Bay area!

I dream about growing a brand that can help others. Not only musicians but also friends that I know have talent and could be amazing in business.

You recently tweeted, “Someone dreams of having the life that you consider depressing.” What do you dream about?

I dream about growing a brand that can help others. Not only musicians but also friends that I know have talent and could be amazing in business. I’d love to bring up the underground community and share forward thinking and innovative sounds. I also dream of being successful doing what I am passionate about such as producing music and playing live. Sometimes when I post or tweet things like that they are also messages for myself to remember. I have had a rough past and sometimes depression gets me down but I have to remind myself that someone out there is content with having worse. It’s all about your metric for understanding what happiness is. A great book is “The subtle art of not giving a fuck”. It’s a daily challenge and constant practice for me.

What do you do for fun outside of music?

I love to skate, snowboard, hang with my friends and my dog. I work a million hours so I really try to enjoy my time off. Sometimes a little too much hehe.

How did Below the Surface come together? Why did you feel it needed to exist?

As I started getting more into EDM I noticed that I was really fond of some genres more than others. I found labels such as Rauthentic and Daruma and they were huge inspirations. I met a few people in the SoundCloud repost game and they sort of showed me the ropes. They gave me some of my first opportunities to grow fast and build a label.

How has it evolved over time?

At first I started a whole network with a variety of genres and channels. I kinda bit off more than I could chew. Below The Surface used to be called hella trap. After I got established a friend needed some help and I was in the position to buy a growing label off him, which later became Above The Surface which is curated by soulecist. After years of trial and error I figured out exactly what I wanted to promote and what community I want to build.

You recently launched The Surface Agency. Can you tell us a little bit about it and what you guys have in store?

I met a really great friend named Harley and at first he was helping manage my THRPY bookings. After our friendship grew and I recognized many of his talents we had the idea to merge our businesses and come together to create an agency. I like to refer to it as a family to ensure that talented artists are getting what they deserve and are not taken advantage of. Our Roster can be found at aboveandbelow.co

I really hope I can create some inspiration and happiness for some people out there in the world.

What are you most excited about in 2019?

This year we have taken the biggest leap in the brand aboveandbelow.co and we have many new things to share such as, more sound packs, contests, new merch, festival booths and of course lots of amazing music. As for THRPY, I just can’t wait to share all this music I’ve been making. I really hope I can create some inspiration and happiness for some people out there in the world.

A compilation that has no signs of slowing down returns, as Below the Surface is back with some new treasure. Having only premiered in 2017, Sounds from Below has already come out with four volumes, this newest release being Vol 5. The 10-track compilation returns with some familiar faces, as well as bringing out those hidden gems of producers. Upon first listen, I noticed myself turning up the volume as I progressed through the compilation, and I promise it will have you doing the same. Each track does a stellar job at showcasing these individual artists’ unique sound design while simultaneously constructing a seamless and cohesive listening experience. Beardthug introduces the collection with ‘delirious’ and it is a great fit for the opener. It starts out with a smooth and groovy house line, and slowly transforms into the glitch and trap madness that is presented in the rest of the album.

If I had to fuxwithfour, the first to grab my ear was LUNDN‘s ‘Impulsive’. A fitting name for a track with a balance of heavy bass paired with a laser like synth hammering over the top. My next choice would have to go to gurf‘s ‘Steppin’. The simple percussion highlights the bass and really flexes your subwoofer. Nevertheless, ‘Jungle Games’ by XTALS and Devious, must be my favorite of this collection. The long pauses between the equally divided high hats and claps resonate between deeply centered bass. The second drop comes in like a dive from the top of a roller coaster after that anxious climb to the top. It sends you speeding through to the end, which only adds to the intensity of it. Finally, ‘Pavilion’ by FLY, is one that absolutely cannot be overlooked. Having the most plays of the compilation, Pavilion utilizes a diverse range of crispy clicks and catchy samples to leave you wishing that there was more. From start to finish, Sounds from Below Vol. 5 is one of the optimum collections of forward-thinking trap. Turn your speaker volume up higher than normal to become fully immersed in this experience. Check out the full compilation below and be sure to follow Below the Surface to stay up to date!

Despite constant claims that SoundCloud is dead, the platform continues to be the lifeblood of the underground. It’s the breeding ground for innovative new sounds and THE place to find the best new artists. While the volume of quality is higher than ever, the mass of mediocrity is equally at its apex. Thankfully there are a number of underground labels out here doing it for the culture, working everyday to help develop and showcase the next wave of producers. We’ve decided to highlight 8 of our favoruites. Check the list below and let us know if we missed anyone.

Below The Surface

Below The Surface burst onto the scene last year with Sounds From Below, a stellar compilation that featured releases from founders THRPY and soulecist. alongside sfam, TVBOO and more. Since then they’ve put out 3 more compilations and a slew of singles. Each release is a true piece of the underground. They’re committed to digging to find the best under-the-radar stars in bass music and putting them on full display.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/620695131″ params=”color=#0029ff&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Dont Die At Work

Founded by HMU, Dont Die At Work is a label and clothing company based in LA. They started as “a reminder to work hard towards having the life you want, a movement founded on putting in that time and reaping the benefits in both your 9-5 and your 5-9”. The outlook speaks to creatives grinding ever day and dreaming about the future, while working to make it happen now. Their impressive Grind compilation kicked the year off with a bang and included the brain-bending single ‘Prehistoric’ from doppla & HMU. They’re constantly working to help break new sounds with single releases as well. ‘Cerepon’ and ‘Seizmo’ will give you a taste of the type of bass Dont Die at Work is slingin’. For even more DDAW be sure to check out their Day Of The Dead compilation.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/436406769″ params=”color=#0029ff&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Liquid Ritual

Started as a radio show in 2016 and established as a label less than a year ago, Liquid Ritual has climbed its way to the top in an incredibly quick way. In this extremely short span of time, Kareful, LTHL and Stohou have not only brought their creation to the forefront of the recording industry with iconic releases and a fabulous debut compilation, but also have expanded their action into shows, hosting a series of branded events in their hometown London and all over Poland. It’s not a secret that Wave is slowly infiltrating in the mainstream (pushed by names the likes of Virtual Self and Stooki Sound) and thanks to its marked identity, proved maturity and endless dynamism, it seems Liquid Ritual is ready to take the lead of the Wave movement. I don’t know if, as Stohou said, “Skrillex is going to be making Wave in a year or two,” but this UK label will be there for sure.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/540443109″ params=”color=#0029ff&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Lost Dogz

“We’re not a Label. We’re not a collective. We are a cult of best friends.” That’s how Lost Dogz recently described themselves. While they may not technically consider themselves a collective or label, leaving them off this list would be near criminal. Leaders in the minimal yet heavy bass space, they’ve helped to change the direction of trap and bass music across the industry. Their “cult” features a who’s who of innovators including Abelation, Milano, Untitld, Sktchy Ppl, Chrome Republic, Eazybaked, Chrome, Snuggles, Cambot, Player Dave & Vide. We’ve already featured 2 of the Dogz in our Focus Five segments and could easily run through the whole list. Lost Dogz’s sound is dark, dirty, distinctive, and dank but always fresh. If you’re sick of bright and cheery future bass, Lost Dogz are the perfect antithesis. Hit their SoundCloud and tell me it doesn’t get your tail wagging.

Misc.

Miscellaneous: home to everything you’ve never heard before. Just good music. Ambitious? Yes. Excessive? Hell no. The good folks behind Misc. are definitely not some random guys, since they’re responsible for one of my favourite bass compilations of the year. ‘Guest Vol. 2’ is a collection that should be on the top of every experimental bass junkie’s library and it’s a mirror that reflects the soul of the whole project. Freedom of expression is the only rule that is seen reflected in more than one hundred releases, among which you can find plenty of illustrious names. Capshun, episcool, Sofasound, Rohaan, Rome in Silver, and Great Dane are just some of the brilliant minds appeared under Misc.’s emblem with intriguing and unexpected creative works. This is a label I never forget to mention as an example when I find myself talking and defending the real underground movement.

Night Owl Collective

Night Owl Collective is a giant, a pillar of the SoundCloud community, an example and a model to admire and to take inspiration from. If you really have no idea what I’m talking about and you’ve never come across one of its monumental compilations, you better get out of your cave and listen up. With its 50k followers, the Owl is playing a pivotal role in the scene, ensuring a non-stop flow of new music from both well-known acts and newcomers. Its well deserved reputation suggests and encourages a positive and open-minded approach to every release that goes beyond the popularity of the artists’ names. Night Owl Collective isn’t just a label anymore, it’s a world apart, an all-out experience.

Phuture Collective

A lot of platforms claim to be the future, very few truly embody it. Phuture Collective however proves time and time again just how ahead of the curve they truly are. Their thematic compilations are some of the best out. Not only do they feature a cross-section of the most talented artists around, they actually sound cohesive and carefully curated. Each track is different shade or colour on the same canvas and Phuture is crafting works of art. While their releases speak for themselves, it’s really their knack for finding and helping to foster underground talent. Few people stay ahead of us but when it comes to the future of music, but with Phuture, I often feel like I’m catching up. If you’re trying to stay ahead of the game, Phuture is one of your most reliable sources.

Wormhole Music Group

One of Soundcloud’s strongholds has always been its ability to allow you to go through the next song you didn’t know you needed. Its dashboard is like a surprise package that you can unwrap again and again, day after day, always finding a new gift. Too often, however, it’s so overloaded with reposts that it’s quite a mission to bring out something good from that jungle, for this reason I guess everyone has their aces up their sleeve. Mine has always been WMG. Trying to forecast the nature of the new releases is always a shot in the dark, a mission impossible. “Forward-thinking, next-level bass music sounds that defy genre and push boundaries” is the label’s mantra, something that I know you’ve heard tons of times, but trust me, here you’re in good hands. From dark, mental, post-apocalyptic Trap to melodic Jazztronic inspired-vibes, passing by glitched, funky, weird and wonky cartoonstep bangers, Wormhole Music Group is the eldorado for any hardcore and open-minded bass music lover.
