In recent times, Bensley has quickly become a major player in the North American drum and bass scene. Despite being around for a few years, none have been as fruitful as 2022 for the Toronto-based artist, having made his rounds on all the hottest labels in the game. From mau5trap to UKF and beyond, to touring worldwide, Bensley’s momentum appears to keep growing with each release and every live show.

To close out this successful campaign, Bensley returns to mau5trap with a contribution to the label’s coveted We Are Friends compilation due out early next year. With ‘Never Enough,’ the talented producer beautifully showcases the skills that have allowed him to rise the ranks of the electronic scene. The introduction is minimal yet intriguing, as Bensley creates a hypnotic soundscape before suddenly changing the pace of the track. The transition is abrupt yet seamless, as a crisp drum and bass rhythm takes center stage. Edging on the darker side of Bensley’s discography, ‘Never Enough’ boasts an air of sorrow and melancholy, but is nicely contrasted by brief tones of cheerfulness.

Don’t miss Bensley’s last release of the year.

After an unexpected cameo on Mau5trap, Bensley has returned on UKF, this time with a full release on the label. I’ll be straight honest, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Canadian producer, but when Steph sent me ‘Roll The Dice’, I immediately knew I had to get behind the keyboard to write about it.

Before talking about the song itself, I’d like to take a second to reflect on how “strange” it is to see a D&B artist releasing on Mau5trap. A label that boasts a totally different background. Let’s be clear, in recent years Deadmau5’s founded imprint has made a decisive turn. It added a genre-fluid selection to the niche sound to which it had dedicated itself in the first few years, becoming a much more eclectic outlet (a la Monstercat). However, this is yet another symptom that shows that Drum&Bass is indeed conquering more and more space in America. Good times ahead folks!

Let’s get back to UKF, Bensley and ‘Roll The Dice’. This is one of those songs that I call “serotonin-boosters.” It triggers exactly the part of me that wants to feel cheerful, laidback, free from my duties for a little moment. It’s an open window on a tiny escapism world where each one of us wants to jump in at a certain point of our weeks. The vocals that encourage us to “Roll the dice, let’s see what happens, when its late at night,” are extremely catchy and are a pleasure to sing along to. Sometimes they feel a bit stifled by autotune but in the end, this slight distortion makes them integrate more organically with the synths. The melody is extremely catchy as well and is instantly likable. It’s straightforward? Yes. Is this a good reason to criticize it? Hell no. As said before, it enters your head so quickly that in an instant you find yourself thinking of nothing else but dancing, running, living your best life. I love how Bensley channeled the same electrifying mood of some Netsky and Fred V & Grafix’s classics I grew up with into ‘Roll The Dice.’ Definitely a song that will stay on rotation in my selection for a while.

Riding the momentum of ‘That Feeling‘ and the subsequent house edit released via Pilot Records, Bensley returns today with the multi-genre Cascade EP – his first collection of tracks since his Muskoka album from 2019. While most would think that a house edit of a drum and bass original seems peculiar, Bensley executed both at an elite level and continues to demonstrate this genre fluidity with his new project on Deadbeats.

Straying from his usual drum and bass inclinations, Bensley delivers a rich four-track project that displays a welcome versatility that is sure to appeal to a wide audience. Always one to use natural sounds to inspire his productions, the Toronto-based artist uses this theme to paint serene, ethereal soundscapes in the ensemble, giving listeners a sense of hope toward the societal change to normalcy. The Cascade EP is best suited for exploration in nature, with the project’s title track transporting listeners to a beautiful waterfall in the midst of a mystical forest. ‘In My Head’ further drives this journey into the wild, with a soft take on drum and bass that exudes brightness. The rest of the Cascade EP follows this motif of positivity and ambition, as Bensley delivers a feel-good project worth listening to on repeat.

In late 2018, Bensley made his debut on Pilot Records with the infectious ‘Time‘ alongside T & Sugah and C. via the debut Destinations compilation. Now, over two trips around the Sun later, the Toronto-based artist makes his grand return to the imprint with his first original of the year following a triumphant bootleg of Tame Impala’s ‘It Might Be Time.’ As a label that is steadily becoming a personal favourite for quality drum and bass, each new release offers an exciting sonic journey, with Bensley’s ‘That Feeling’ being no exception.

Bensley’s got quite the knack for creating captivating and addictive rhythms, and that theme is rampant throughout ‘That Feeling.’ The gradual introduction sets the stage for what follows, with intriguing effects, a crescendoing melody and hypnotizing vocals slowly adding layers to the beat. As the drop hits, the energy is intensified with snappy percussion and a groovy bassline. Featuring a seamless change of pace halfway through to deliver a catchy house chorus before returning to the drum and bass cadence, ‘That Feeling’ is a well-rounded piece that is sure to please a wide array of listeners. Don’t miss Bensley’s latest below.

Over the years Canadian producer Bensley has become a force to be reckoned with in the drum and bass scene. In 2015, Bensley dropped his debut album on DnB pioneer Andy C’s label and he has been steadily delivering since then. The young production wizard has consistently delivered fresh and exciting DnB records with some of the most forward-thinking sound design you’ll hear in all of bass music. With the recent rise in popularity of DnB in North America, it’s only right that Bensley is becoming a regular at one of the flagship labels of electronic music in North America, Monstercat. Earlier in the year, Bensley made his Monstercat debut with his single ‘All Night’, and this time he returns again with yet another showstopper of a track.

We begin with this eerie minor melody that seems to be endlessly cascading into a pit of darkness. The complexity of the intro is built upon with similarly creepy counter melodies combined with ghostly vocals calls lurking in the background. After a quick build, these deep growling synths continue to carry the tone of the record in the drop section, while the drums finally make their appearance known almost immediately. In addition to all this, periodically these insane saxophone-like synths peak their way through the mix in the breaks, giving this record that last cherry on top. Make sure to stream the whole thing below!
