“I don’t know how Dabow isn’t playing in every festival around the world.” Holly tweeted this just a few weeks ago and let me say, there is no more urgent question than this one. We at FUXWITHIT have been wondering about this for quite some time, as we have been chronicling the Argentinian producer’s incredible musical adventures on this blog since 2015. A time when he was still dividing his creative efforts between the Wobad and, the now iconic, Dabow moniker. He’s trap music’s final boss, a legend among legends, your favorite producer’s favorite producer. The best way to sum up Dabow’s journey is probably the one Wiley Cable came up with: “this dude has made every festival banger you’ve heard since 2013, every single one.”

This is not the article in which we are going to analyze his omnipresence in the bass scene, but to highlight some recent news, just know that Chase & Status used one of his samples in the intro of their chart-topping new single ‘Backbone’ with Stormzy (their first UK number one song ever).

But Dabow’s influence goes also beyond his own productions. His tastemaker skills are held in the same regard as his mixes, playlists, and SoundCloud likes are an endless source of bangers of the rarest kind. For this new volume of Bootleg Business we asked him to dig into his archives and treat us with seven of his current favourite unofficial remixes and edits. Needless to say, he did not disappoint.

Bass Cannon (LYNY Flip)

THIS ONE! Bro understood the assignment. The way he just nailed it is crazy. Minimalistic, modern, and such a vibe. 10/10.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1864044945″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Skrillex, Hamdi, TAICHU & OFFAIAH – Push (MALIXE Remix)

This flip is close to perfection. Getting a dope flip from such a great original is always something to celebrate. The bass, the flow, vocals, mixdown, this got it all.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1837581240″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

G Jones & EPROM – R.A.V.E. (Rebel Scum Bootleg)

Rare DNB pick by myself, but I had to. This is too solid! And the main melody is still there from the original. The drum work is just crazy.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1827480228″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

BOOM BOOM POW (K3ONI CLUB WEAPON EDIT)

The first drop of this one got that push!!! It always makes me wanna play it out! Super fresh. I wasn’t familiar with K3ONI and this flip was a great entry point.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1744266483″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

PRINCESS SONAR (VIP edit)

I just found this Ice Spice flip by Squired and was like “wooooooooooot”. I wanna play this out so bad. Super fresh and unique. This is for the club. Followed Squired instantly.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1838726373″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

BENNETT – VOIS SUR TON CHEMIN (PIERCE & DENNETT REMIX)

Love the combination between Techno and Trap-Dubstep. They nailed that. Also, the epic vocals give it character. Mix slaps too.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1869220161″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

John Summit & Sub Focus – Go Back ft. Julia Church (Arya Remix)

This one is absolutely insane. The originality of that bass phrase is so good. And atmospheres on bridges are crazy. 10/10 from Arya.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1857272256″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Gaszia is a man of many definitions. They call him a visionary, a wizard or, more simply, a legend. I like to picture him as a musical alchemist. Over the years I’ve seen him putting his spin on dozens of different sounds, all mastered with impeccable technical skills and forward-thinking creativity. I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks his story would deserve a whole article, or even a full-length book.

If this scenario were to happen, what is certain is that a chapter would be dedicated to his bootlegs and, especially, his own Bandcamp Edit series. Launched in 2020, this “collection of edits made over the years” as he usually belittles it, is a goldmine of deep cuts of the rarest kind. With 36 edits spanning over five volumes, it features reworks of hits from the likes of Deadmau5, laxcity, Lil Uzi Vert, Ivy Lab, Jeff Mills, G Jones x Eprom, Pinkpantheress, Skrillex, T-Pain, Sinjin Hawke, Cesco and, of course, Hudson Mohawke and Nikki Nair’s ‘Set The Roof.’ That’s not all, of course. His bootleg-master status is solidified also by the priceless selection of phenomenal tracks we can find in his SoundCloud likes, on his live sets’ tracklists and on his Patreon.

At this point, I believe it’s pretty clear why I wanted him to join the panel of Bootleg Business curators. Right below you can dig into a first-class selection of bootlegs he selected exclusively for FUXWITHIT, while you can enjoy the latest Gaszia’s originals here.

frog chaser – I’m losing the eskimo pulse!!!

A recent discovery within the last year is frog chaser. Everything they do is pretty bonkers. Their most recent “magnum opus” edit consists of an incredible club reconstruction of the famous ‘pulse x’ bass.

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 track=2321617161 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 tracklist=false artwork=small]

TOKISCHA & YOMEL EL MELOSO – Calentura Vaginal (Wost Hard Drum Edit)

This one has been a staple in my sets lately and it goes off every time. Don’t sleep on Wost. Everything he does is phenomenal.

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=1650265189 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 tracklist=false artwork=small track=1046616910]

Gwen Stefani – WIND IT UP CITYTRONX REFIX

Citytronix is probably one of the most diverse artists I’ve come across recently. I had the pleasure of meeting them and seeing them perform an unbelievable set in London last year. This ‘wind it up’ refix wastes no time getting to the point and is just a crazy live tool to play out.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1512957361″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Scratcha DVA & Sinjin Hawke – JME Dafuq

I could gush about Sinjin Hawke loads but this reinterpretation of his track with Scratcha DVA is phenomenal. What he did to the JME acapella is also just so creative. Every Sinjin Hawke track/edit is always a weapon.

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=3914406761 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 tracklist=false artwork=small track=3992869438]

DJ G2G – MY HUMPS JUST WANNA VROOM VROOM

I always play a DJ G2G edit in my sets, but this one in particular is just a dancefloor weapon. Incredible front-to-back.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1582015023″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

DJBBOY X ML BUCH – HIGH SPEED [SALT_SERVER OUTRO BLEND]

A great closer (or opener) for a set, this mashup is a great pairing of two songs from opposite ends of the musical spectrum. Really well executed.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1424328955″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Tiesto has released his first drum&bass song in over a decade, Brownies&Lemonade’s DNBNL project has partnered with Deadbeats and is going to Tomorrowland, Deadmau5 has played a D&B set at EDC Mexico, Chase & Status are once again one of hottest acts around, a new North American WORSHIP tour is about to kick off and Rohaan has just wrapped up another multi-week series of show in the States.

Now. I won’t say the phrase. Nor will I dust off the infamous hashtag (you know the one). I’m just being objective. The ball is rolling (pun intended) and this gives me a chance to throw myself into the fray with something that flirts with both culture and SEO. This month I bring back Bootleg Business with a massive drum&bass pack of 30 (unofficial) remixes that showcase pretty much everything the genre has to offer. Forget obscure cuts or hyper-sophisticated intellectual material though, this collection is strictly party-friendly. We have jump-up bangers, mainstage classic reworks, liquid rollers, ten-year-old remixes, ten-day-old remixes, weird bootlegs, and cheesy edits of pop songs. This Bootleg Business volume has it all. Rumble remix included.

Friendly reminder that this list doesn’t pretend to showcase the finest bootlegs around, nor the rarest. Music can be (just) fun, remember? This is an opportunity to have fun celebrating the art of unofficial remixes and, why not, a chance to find some new goodies to spice up your tracklists ahead of the festival season. As in the case of my summer special, the playlist is loosely divided into two parts. It starts with the heaviest cuts and it progresses into the more melodic tracks.

Have fun!

There is no doubt that, along with UKG, Baile Funk was the other trending topic this year within the electronic scene. Unlike the former, however, due to geographical and cultural reasons, the general attention towards the Brazilian bass music universe has been largely superficial, almost always only scratching the surface of what this decades-old and extensive scene has to offer. Even leaving aside the controversial ‘Baile Phonk’ situation, especially in the first six months of the year there was a general hype-induced rush by non-Brazilian artists to draw on rhythms and sounds typical of genres and sub-genres such as Favela Bass and Baile Funk. In most cases, the results were often limited to a pale imitation of the original sound and a bland repetition of the most common stereotypes. Don’t get me wrong, I joined in the general enthusiasm too and enjoyed the stream of Baile remixes popping up in my SoundCloud feed.

When I started thinking about this edition of Bootleg Business, I quickly realized that I didn’t have enough knowledge to be able to guarantee a result that had a cultural as well as entertainment value. That is why I decided to take a step back and rely on two real insiders: Chediak and KARAN! You might remember the latter from my review of his MOVADÃO EP while you might be familiar with the former if you follow his label SPEEDTEST RAVE or more probably thanks to his collaboration with camoufly, ‘only1‘. Enough of my chatter, get ready for some serious Brazilian bootleg business, and be sure to not miss Chediak’s extra suggestions you can find at the end of the article!

DJ RaMeMeS – Sexo 3 Completo (Syú Flip)
We released this song as part of the first “ILLEGAL MUSIC” compilation on SPEEDTEST RAVE. It’s a remix of DJ RaMeMes’s “Sexo 3 Completo” that brings it to the D&B world. At the same time, I think the sound design of this one is reeeally techno-y, and the second drop makes sure that we have a great time with it. Every single time this one gets played at any underground rave over here things get a little crazy.

Skrillex, Fred again.. & Flowdan – Rumble (yandrel bootleg)
This bootleg is just MADNESS! Yandrel got the original track and literally made it sound way more nasty and aggressive, really showing the best things of his Favela Bass style and showing how aggressive our Brazilian funk can be!

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1423652296″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

DJ CARLOZS – A FAMA…
I honestly think I heard the original version of ROSALÍA and The Weeknd’s “LA FAMA” just once and it does not sound the same after this DJ CARLOZS flip. I don’t even know what to say about this one, it blends all of the elements I love the most about Baile Funk…the sound design, crazy percussion, and unpredictable slices in samples, this one is really great. I have no idea about what happens in the end of the track also, I think DJ CARLOZS needs to be studied by NASA or something. Also, the cover pic is him with Boys Noize on a baile funk party, such a boss move.

piquezin putão treinado x sam gellaitry (DJ BONNi)
This one is really simple but really catchy, made by BONNi (bonniebrokehearts) who is a really talented artist and really underrated in my opinion! Posted on “NAÇÃOREBOLATION69″, a Brazilian experimental music collective full of insane artists.

“DEUS” [DJ MARSELLO]
This one is a bootleg with many layers, this is a baile beat with the main sample from “13 Angels Standing Guard ‘Round the Side of Your Bed” by Silver Mt. Zion. This, by itself, is already crazy but he also samples ‘Fim de Semana no Rio’ by Teto and replies the sample vocals with his own original vocals that make fun of the original lyrics from the song. The original song says “God will guide me / Deus vai guiar” while MARSELLO is singing the same melody but with “come suck me / vem me mamar” and other classic baile language like “lança”, “sarrada” and stuff. Like I said, it has many layers.

Sade – Smooth Operator (Adame Edit)
Adame picked a classic and added a bit of his flavour to it! Excellent edit, so beautifully done and aggressive at the same time, simply amazing! Adame is insanely talented and also an underrated artist, so make sure you guys go follow him!

ANTCONSTANTINO – Orgasmo de Pula Pula
There’s this new sub-genre called “Pula Pula” that artists like ANTCONSTANTINO, Colas, Taleko, Destravalt, and others are spreading over here. It’s like a blend of afrobeat, techno, and baile funk and I think it’s crazy! More people should be trying this style out, I think it’s got great potential. This song is a bootleg of ‘Soundgasm’ by Rema and was recently played by Jarreau Vandal. I was pretty happy when I saw people’s reactions to it on the dancefloor.

Danna x PZZS – Evoque Horse (Mashup – Remix)
An awesome combination of an insane classic song made by Katy Perry and a really good Brazillian funk song by DJ Escobar, MC’s Menor HR and Menor SG! ‘Evoque Horse’ is a mashup between ‘Dark Horse’ and ‘Evoque Prata’ remixed by the talented duo Danna and PZZS! Both are insanely talented and a “must-have” on your playlists or sets, so check them out.

VIDA LOKA DUB
Racionais MCs are hip-hop legends in Brasil, every single person over here knows at least one song by them and it’s one of those music groups that’s considered untouchable. To remix a Racionais song you need to nail it, so when I made this remix of ‘Vida Loka Pt. 1’ I didn’t even think of releasing it, I thought it was going to be just another bootleg for the DJ sets. People DID NOT give me any peace while I didn’t release this song, and while it still hasn’t reached the ears of Racionais MCs, it’s making waves over here and abroad. Baile Funk was and still is extremely influenced by Racionais and I think their legacy will live forever in many ways inside and outside of music. There’s a great documentary about them on Netflix that I think everyone should watch! ‘VIDA LOKA DUB’ also features a sample from ‘MAROLENTO’ by Puterrier, a Baile Funk/Grime MC that also uses samples from Racionais MCs. The idea of making it Garage/140 was because of the sample, it’s so eery and mysterious…I felt it needed a huge bass and some wubs on it hahaha.

Dennis e Kevin O Chris – TÁ OK ( KOZMO REMIX)
This one is REALLY GREAT! Made by KOZMO, a 14-year old upcoming artist on our scene with a great and unique style of Favela Bass. This kid is definitely the future, and he is just starting, can’t wait to hear his next mad tunes. Crazy stuff!
– K

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1548005044″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

There’s a culture of “dump”/alternative accounts of producers worldwide and here it’s not different, I HIGHLY support everyone to go right now and search for tunes by DJ Tonias, DJ Lukinhas, DJ Dimas and groups like ‘Umild’s do Soundcloud that release bootlegs almost daily, one crazier than the other. For people trying to get more into this underground side of the Brazilian scene, I also recommend following artists like DJ RUANZITO, DJ LD DA FAVELINHA, Adame, rensgo, DJ P7, VHOOR, Deekapz and just getting lost on their feeds, reposts and likes. I don’t know if I can give shout-outs but I’d love to give one to Paul Mond for being one of the few non-Brazilians right now that are really nailing the sound, bounce, and feeling of baile. Love this guy’s flips.

Bootleg Business is back for its fourth installment and this time I have the pleasure to be joined by one who can be considered as the face of the dubstep scene on YouTube. Connor, widely known as Nawtystep, has been nurturing the scene with reviews, reactions, and insight since 2017, becoming a praised and respected voice in the contemporary dubstep scene on a platform like YouTube that otherwise has always been dominated by strictly music promotional channels. I first ran into his channel thanks to his interview with the creator of the ‘All My Homies Hates Skrillex’ documentary and since then, even if I can’t call myself a dubstep fan, I highly appreciate his dedication as a curator and his being vocal about music and culture on Twitter. In full Nawtystep fashion, his Bootleg Business selection showcases a knowledge of dubstep and bass gems stretching back to 2010. To match such a crafted list, I put my memory to the test and dusted off some true classics.

White Rabbit (Lets Be Friends Remix)

I gave this 2nd spot in my Bass remixes of the 2010s when I made that list a few years ago, bettered only by Knife Party’s remix of ‘Last Time.’ Jonny (now on his own as Joyryde of course) and Oren did an insane job here of retaining the character of the original whilst refashioning it with all the vintage LBF energy they could muster. The vocal play across the track is captivating. This is pretty much as exciting as Bass music gets for me, and frankly, all 5 of my picks could’ve been LBF edits.

Du Hast (JAWNS Version)

This month I kick off my selection with something fresh off the press. Published just a few days ago, JAWNS’s version of Ramstein’s iconic classic ‘Du Hast’ is set to cause some giants mosh pits on dancefloors, no doubt. If you’re at a show and you hear this one coming up, prepare your elbows cause it will be mayhem. I’m not gonna lie, this JAWNS-going-metal trend is starting to get me.

Skrillex – Bangarang (Kredo Bootleg)

It still saddens me the extent to which Kredo was slept on, and went under the radar. This bouncy, boisterous rendition of Skrillex’s classic original is a mile and away the best take on it I’ve ever heard – and I came across quite a few! The funky movement of this track is crazily infectious pretty much from start to finish. The only point it lets up is for a sombre midsection that expertly puts the fun into perspective. It’s Kredo in full flow.

FLUX PAVILION – BASS CANNON (LUCA LUSH LIFT)

This track has been sitting on my PC for the past 6 years. It’s probably my favorite Luca Lush edit and a steady presence in my mixes and DJ sets. Do you want to blow some minds? Just play this tune and the job is done. I love how he managed to make a more evil and mental version of the Flux Pavillion classic. This is how I imagine an alien invasion would sound.

Maka & Waeck ft. Farisha – Breathe (Vexare Remix)

I think the oldest track from my selection, reflected a little in the dated feel of the production. However, that exact thing is what gives this track character – that feeling of being of its time, giving it added authenticity. It also oozes with nostalgia factor for me as one of the very first electronic remixes I fell in love with. The heart-aching vocal, the melodic twists in the drops, the processed robotic YOIs. Still raw and still sensational 12 years on.

SATiSFACTiON (YOOKiE EDiT)

YOOKiE has certainly delivered craziest tunes than this one, but I’m simply obsessed with this edit of ‘Satisfaction’. The first time I listened to it I found it just hilarious but as soon as I gave it a try on a proper sound system I had to change my mind! Simple but super effective. This is bootleg business at its finest.

Growin’ Up In The Gutter (Kill The Noise Remix)

Another remix that holds a special place in my heart. I remember showing this to a school friend – one of the only other people in my year remotely interested in bass music – and just watching his jaw drop when the unforgiving KTN Dubstep bulldozed through. The menace of Yelawolf’s vocal matches the heaviness perfectly across drops and builds. There’s a constant feeling here of something simmering, lurking below, ready to wreak havoc – which is what Dubstep is all about.

Herobust – Dirty Work (Cherney Remix)

The original is still one of the filthiest and most cracked tunes I’ve ever heard. Period. For some reason, Cherney decided to feed its madness by making it bigger and louder. I’ve never been a dedicated dubstep guy but I’ve always been fascinated by the megalomania of this remix. Some days I love it, some days I hate it. I only wish I had a video of my first reaction when I found it by surfing SoundCloud.

Tisoki & Oliverse – Spongebob VIP

Only The Frim’s Doot Camp has ever come close to rivaling this VIP in terms of sheer, unbridled, cartoonish fun. I can’t even begin to imagine how much fun Tisoki and Oliverse must’ve had putting this one together. I genuinely had to check my phone hadn’t malfunctioned when I was listening to it for the first time, such is the uncontrollable and whacky nature of the vocal delivery. So colourful, weird, and cooky. We need more bass music that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

graves & Coolights – Say Things (Crankdat Re-Crank)

I’m pretty sure Nawtystep will agree with me when I say that Crankdat is one of the best in the bootleg business. His “Re-Crank” brand has gained a devoted following over the years thanks to a constant flow of top-notch edits. With almost two million plays on SoundCloud alone, Crankdat’s version of ‘Say Things’ needs no introduction. A timeless classic that always hits like the first time.

If it wasn’t for Tiesto randomly spinning some drum&bass on UMF mainstage or Four Tet going wild at every show, the festival season would have felt like a lazily scripted Netflix series so far. While we wait to sound out the tracklists of the two Coachella weekends, Bootleg Business is here to spice things up.

This month, my guest is a true bootleg master, someone who dares to lurk in the depths of the web, looking for forgotten gems and who is not afraid to drop an Ariana Grande and Aphex Twin mash-up in the middle of a set. I’m talking about Ramon Pang of course. I’m pretty sure he needs no introduction, but just in case, he’s a left-field dance producer based in LA, self-proclaimed “lover and documentarian of all things trap music and 90s intelligent dance music” and, I’d like to add, the most hardcore Four Tet fan you’ll ever meet. He co-heads Tabula Rasa Records, a record company and a community that you need to know if you’re into “braindance” or IDM if you want to call it (preorder their new compilation here). You can also catch him sharing tons of interesting stuff on his Twitter, pretty much any day of the week. I was definitely expecting a more obscure selection from Ramon but these dancefloor-oriented picks left me utterly satisfied. Fun fact: there was a one-in-a-million chance and it still happened, originally we both included Falldren’s bootleg in our selection.

Flosstradamus – Total Recall (Falldren Flipped)

The original is so nostalgic for me. I was in a Siscord voice chat with Falldren a year ago and offhandedly said that someone needs to flip ‘Total Recall’ into hardwave and it would be a mainstage hit. He whipped this up in 2-3 hours and published it without thinking too hard about it. But, six months later, I was there live when RL Grime dropped it at Porter Robinson’s Second Sky Fest and when Skeler dropped it as his LA debut at Brownies & Lemonade. That’s every bootlegger’s dream. It’s so deserved – it’s a tidal wave of a track.

SBU – Deep Love

To match the majestic vibes of ‘Total Recall’ I needed to bring up a banger of the same magnitude. Staying in wave territories, the choice was easy. Freshly released just a month ago, SBU’s brutal flip of Calvin Harris and Disciple’s ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ has caused quite a turmoil within the scene. In particular, I heard it literally destroyed Pantheon‘s dancefloor back in December. In case you’re a nerd like me, the pre-drop vocals are from a breakout monologue included in the movie ‘Closer’.

Skrillex, Fred again.. & Flowdan – Rumble (Kinoteki Footwork Jungle Edit)

The crew at Tabula Rasa Records are very good at blurring the line between cheekiness and sincerity. When the Rumble bootleg craze was going on, Kinoteki came out the gate with this beautiful Lone/Machinedrum-inspired melodic flip. I don’t know how serious they were when making this, but it doesn’t really matter – the way it rollercoasters is hypnotizing. I play it live a lot.

deadmau5 – strobe (dossyx edit w/ charlie)

Talking about bootleg crazes, Strobe is another masterpiece that received its massive dose of remixes, both official and unofficial. While I despise pretty much every version I run into so far, I have to say dossyx and Charlie have nailed the task. The mood couldn’t be more different than the original, but in the end the bouncy and crispy groove match very well the iconic melody. Kawaii bounce is probably the most fitting term to label this edit, will camoufly agree?

O’Flynn – Cardi Tool

I’ve loved O’Flynn’s blissful breaks and percussion-driven house on Ninja Tune before, and had no idea he had a Cardi B remix. Good internet friend from the Four Tet fan discord (I own the server, obviously) shared this one day and it was an instant save. In my sets, it’s such a cheat code: 1) super blendable 2) super effective in my deeper underground sets, and 3) a real driver in my more mainstream-leaning ones.

SoSick (KH version)

This one has been sitting on my PC for so long that I completely forgot how it got here. All I remember is that at a certain point (2018 or 2019 probably) Four Tet went wild on SoundCloud dropping a ton of unreleased material altogether. Why? I’ve no idea. I could do some research on my own, but since I have a living Four Tet-encyclopedia as the guest of this episode I thought it was more fun to ask him directly. Would you mind tweeting more info about this edit Ramon? Anyway, this is the perfect bootleg for those situations when the audience wants to sing along to some well know lyrics but you want to dance along to some classy groove.

Overmono – So U Kno (Villager Mix)

Villager turned Overmono’s biggest anthem into a bass-fueled monster. Like the ‘Cardi Tool’ one, it’s been effective in every set I’ve played it in. I think it really fits my modus operandi – I love tracks that take the best parts of traditional club-ready house/techno, then fuse it with energetic, traditional ‘EDM’ sounds in a restrained way. I think that translates into my music always.

Chris Lake & Green Velvet – Deceiver (Gaszia Edit)

It’s not that I DJ very often, but I swear that even I was getting tired of playing ‘Deceiver’. The original is a killer tune, nothing bad to say, but after rinsing it dozens of times I was desperately looking for an alternative version. I then turned to SoundCloud where I surprisingly found this edit by the one and only Gaszia. Way better than Chris Lake’s VIP.

TWRK – Living Room (Tielsie Remix)

Bit of a fringe pick here… this flip is almost 10 years old but it’s still one of my all-time favorites. On one hand, it sounds like a product of its time (2014), especially the clean 808 and the stereotypical trap/footwork drums. Listen to the original and then compare it to this flip’s take on its main melody… the way it’s chopped is so skillful and virtuosic.

Kanye West vs. Lucio Battisti – Love Lockdown (Nastro Rosa Edit)

This is one of my most secret guilty pleasures. I’m warning you, explaining it in words it won’t make any sense: it’s a mash-up between Kanye’s quintessential ‘Love Lockdown’ vocals and the instrumental of ‘Nastro Rosa’, a song by Lucio Battisti, one of the most beloved Italian singer-songwriter and composer of the 1970s. Genious idea, perfect realization, immaculate vibes.

This is the title of an article published on Billboard a few days ago (thanks Colin for sending it my way). What did I tell you? The music business is still a bootleg business. I spent some time on TikTok while scouting tracks for this second volume and let me tell you, among the enormous quantity of horrible slap house remixes, sped-up versions, and hyper-compressed drift phonk bangers, there’s tons of fun stuff. No other social media platform has ever been so prolific on this side. Now, we’re not here to break the next viral hit, but I can assure you this month we’re providing you with ten gems you really should add to your collection and USBs. And who better than camoufly could join me in this mission? Not only is he a pro SoundCloud digger, but he himself has delivered some memorable remixes and edits over the years. Fresh from his brand new EP In Plain Sight and the seventh edition of his Glittertape mix series, with no surprise camoufly’s selection was filled with baile vibes. I answered back with some funk too, plus some dancefloor fillers and a very special mash-up to close this second volume of Bootleg Business in style.

zack fox – only thing on my mind (two step verified)

This is one of the best discoveries of 2023 for me, freshly released just a couple of weeks ago. Shout out to swami sound and gum.mp3, I just love it when ideas like these come to life and make so much sense. Truly a gem.

ENVOLVENCIA FUTURISTA NA SELVA [[ DJ RAMEMES ]] RUMBLE REMIX

My SoundCloud feed has been splattered with DJ RaMeMes’s tracks lately. I keep seeing him literally everywhere, among everyone’s liked tracks. I took that as I sign that I had to include him in this volume. On top of that, it’s finally safe again to share Skrillex remixes, and this version of ‘Rumble’ is pure, beautiful chaos.

Honestly, I didn’t even know I could pick something like this, but here we are. Love this tune to death. It’s just insane. I didn’t even know the ISOxo flip could be turned to another level. But it actually happened. I can’t wait to play this one live.
It slaps, that’s for sure. But from being a great dancefloor tune to being used as the soundtrack for a Levi’s ad, the gap is huge. Anyway, this remix by Jamie Hai raises the bpm and splashes over the iconic wobbling bass with a good dose of frenetic groove, turning ‘Flat Beat’ into an even more lethal dancefloor weapon.

This one is from my close friend 6amsunset. He does random things like this one every once in a while. and they turn out to be little underground masterpieces. Yea, you can say he’s a genius.

Daft Punk – Indo SIlver Club (Infiltrator Regroove)

I was very surprised to not see a Daft Punk bootleg among camoufly’s picks, so I’m personally making up for it. I honestly didn’t know the term “regroove” existed and I have no idea what it actually means, but this one is a gem for sample nerds. Infiltrator has created his own version of ‘Indo Silver Club’ by blending together samples from the Daft Punk’s original cut and DJ Falcon and Thomas Bangalter’s ‘Together’.

Skrillex & Bobby Raps – Leave Me Like This (Darby Remix)

My good friend Darby decided to pop off his 2023 with this Skrillex remix and honestly, even if I’ve been there sending feedback and whatnot through the process, I love how it turned out to be. Another 2023 gem.

Flo Rida x T-Pain – Low [EOTI FLIP]

I had the chance to test this flip live the past weekend and I can assure you that it goes off! You might see some perplexed faces in the first seconds due to the (very) arrogant in-the-face kick but they won’t last long. They’ll either start dancing like animals or they will leave the dancefloor. Don’t worry, it’s natural selection. Meanwhile, be sure you have this flip in your collections.

SWIM – Say It Right

This last one is special for me. I love it when I find out about these super high-energy songs that carry so much emotion with them. And this is a prime example of it. It’s like SWIM really gave Nelly Furtado’s vocals a new life. Hard to not shed a tear.

Beyoncé X Stardust – Break My Soul (Sango Mix)

I know this is “just” a mash-up, but come on, it’s genius. The title says it all. Beyoncé’s voice singing over ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ may sound bizarre, but somehow everything works almost perfectly. It’s not really an unknown edit (almost 80k plays on SoundCloud) but I found it just a few days ago. It clearly has that “closing track” feeling and in fact it closes my b2b with camoufly.

Welcome to the first volume of Bootleg Business, a brand-new FUXWITHIT original column, that celebrates the unsung art of unofficial remixes. Every month I’ll go back to back with a guest, showcasing a selection of our favorite edits, dubs, or whatever you want to call them. This will be a space free from the pressure to keep up with new music. Our guests will be free to dig into their libraries for long-forgotten gems as well as select the hit of the moment. Strictly unofficial.

For this pilot episode, we decided to kick things off in-house with a b2b between me and FUXWITHIT’s very own Colin aka classyvlassy. He’s a true basshead, so expect some trap bangers from his selection, alongside some hip hop and even drum&bass. From my side, I couldn’t resist selecting some well-known cuts but I believe you won’t be disappointed (the obscure stuff will come in the next episodes, trust me). Also, don’t worry, we don’t have any ‘Rumble’ edits.

Rude Boy (Klean Remix)

Hold on and read what I have to say before rage-quitting this article. I know this remix has almost half a million plays on SoundCloud alone and has been spammed all over the internet in the past week. But that’s exactly the reason why it’s here. It perfectly embodies the spirit of this column. Think about it: the most talked about moment of 2023’s Super Bowl (musically speaking) has been an unofficial edit uploaded by a Brazillian teenager on his SIDE ACCOUNT, with just a few thousand followers. Crazy, eh? I’ll say it one more time, unofficial creations keep the music world fresh and exciting. That’s why I wanted to open Bootleg Business with this track. It’s its manifesto.

CLB – Bootlegs [002]

The title alone makes this a must for our selections. Chicago’s CLB is well known for his ability to give tracks he loves a darker and dirtier spin, and that’s just what he delivers on his second release of bootlegs. The 3-track offering sees CLB flipping tracks from Kunta Kinte, Skelecta x Distinkt, and Wiley Cat. The pack provides an insight into the sounds that influence the artist, shines a light on often-overlooked underground gems, and simply fucking bangs. Exploring the realms of 140 and grime, the icy bangers are built for dingy basements and beastly sound systems. Those looking to embrace the dark recesses of bass music will be delighted. Fans hoping for pop-friendly EDM bops will be frightened. Bootlegs [002] is yet another example of why we love CLB.

Dennis Ferrer – Hey Hey (camoufly Remix)

The first time I heard this remix I was languishing in a complete hangover after one of the many nights out during ADE. Once I heard the drop, I was reborn, ready for another party. This remix is a certified banger. It hits harder than a bottle of Jäger gulped down in one breath. When thinking about ‘Hey Hey’ I used to recall the sensual house vibes of the original or the hyperactive disco groove of the Riva Starr remix. Now all I can think about is me fighting for my life in a mosh-pit. Good job camoufly.

Fred again.. – Kammy (like i do) (So Dope Bootleg)

So Dope flexes his talents as a remixer with a unique flip of Fred again’s ‘Kammy (like i do).’ The fresh take embodies all of the emotion of the original while injecting a distinct level of knock. The original vocals tie the track together as So Dope adds in lush pads and beefed-up drums before exploring three unique drops. Moving from trap, to club and wave, this bootleg truly checks all of the boxes, making it primed to ring off at clubs without sacrificing any of the feels.

Polarkreis 18 – Allein, Alene feat. Nephew (Voliik remix)

Let’s go step by step. I’m a huge fan of Eric Prydz. His remix of ‘Allein Allein’ is one of my favorite tracks from him and it made me fall in love with these vocals. Voliik is one of the most fascinating and skilled producers I know. What could go wrong with the combination of all these elements? Voliik’s electro treatment is brutal and extreme as always, but it perfectly matches the adrenaline rush triggered by the vocals, in this version sung by the Danish band Nephew. Indeed, this is actually a remix of a rework of the original Polarkreis 18′ song. Confused? Read the SoundCloud description for the full, beautiful story behind this remix.

Lil Yachty – Poland (Formula & Nautika Bootleg)

I’ll admit that I’m a bit behind on this one. Released late last year, Formula & Nautika take Lil Yachty’s ‘Poland’ into the world of DnB. Let me start by saying this really shouldn’t be this good. That’s not a knock on Formula & Nautika’s talents because they prove them in stripes. It’s just rare that a DnB flip of a SoundCloud rap hit sounds this well crafted. Yachty’s addictive and simplistic vocals make it feel instantly familiar but the way they’re bent and stretched creates melodic layers that are damn near spiritual. The drops hit with maximum impact while still remaining infectious and uplifting. This song is simply too much fun. Don’t blame me if this is stuck on repeat for the foreseeable future.

Mr. Carmack – lean on rmx (1great dane totally helped too)

Here’s another widely popular, or I should probably say iconic, remix. I’ve been sharing this version of ‘Lean On’ left and right for six years now, it would simply be a crime to not include it in Bootleg Business. Long life to Carmack (and Great Dane too) for this gem and for that album full of random beats he dropped in 2017.

PRYZMS – TALES FROM THE DIRTY SOUTH RE:MIXTAPE

What happens when you flip Atlanta rap classics into hard-hitting bass cuts? ATL native PRYZMS decided to find out and we couldn’t be more grateful for it. Leaning into his early influences, TALES FROM THE DIRTY SOUTH RE:MIXTAPE is a love letter to the iconic sounds of his city that also show off his undeniable skills. Blistering trap and bass is elevated by vocal samples from rap staples that include ‘In The A,’ ‘Kryptonite,’ ‘Dirty South,’ ‘ATLiens’ and more. This is untapped SoundCloud gold that’s ripe for mining. Bask in the sonic riches.

SOOHAN – Missy Tribute

“A supercut of Missy Elliot’s hardest lines running atop a selection of Timbaland’s best cuts.” This is how SOOHAN himself described this cut, and to be honest, it’s pretty self explicative. There’s nothing much to add about the song (it slaps!) but I can’t stress you enough to check SOOHAN’s full discography. He’s a remix wizard and sample genius. On top of that, he doesn’t limit himself to pop remixes but he mainly incorporates and explores sounds from all over the world. His SoundCloud profile is a true encyclopedia.

Skrillex – Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites (Fabian Mazur Remix)

With the recent release of not one, but two new Skrillex albums, it’s probably safe to say you’ve been inundated with Skrillex remixes as of late. So why not lean into it with a fresh approach? Rather than taking on ‘Rumble’ or one of the iconic producer’s recent releases, Fabian Mazur has instead opted to take on Sonny’s all-time classic ‘Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites.’ With the original now well over a decade old, a fresh flip actually feels like a unique take. Fabian Mazur leverages the vocals and signatures from OG while completely flipping it on its head for a trapped-out twist that’s primed for the FUXWITHIT audience. Flipping a classic is always a difficult task, but Fabian Mazur always rises to the challenges ahead of him.

You can call them bootlegs, edits, reworks, dubs, refixes, or by any other fancy name, but the reality remains one and one only: unofficial remixes are one of the main drivers of the evolution of electronic music. The proliferation of these creations is what allows the continuous surface of new sounds, styles and sub-genres. Although, occasionally, they may seem more of a plague (can you hear all the Skrillex remixes coming?), they keep the underground fresh and exciting. They allow producers to experiment while at the same time gaining exposure, not to mention when they single-handedly give popular tracks a second life. A win-win situation, right? Well, I guess certain people in some cool offices would disagree with this analysis, but the “remix” is such a pivotal part of our pop culture (simply think about memes or TikTok) that it’s not going away anytime soon. No matter how many copyright claims will be fired off.

Late last year, the entire FUXWITHIT team was tuned into the traditional end-of-the-year call (yes, the same where we crowned ‘Rumble’ song of 2022), we ended up addressing this topic and how our habits as music bloggers have significantly changed in the span of just a few years. Looking back at 2018/2019, our articles and charts were full of unofficial material. Year after year, this representation had diminished, replaced by more “official” selections. The reason behind this trend is obvious. As we all (artists and fans) shifted our listening habits from SoundCloud to Spotify and Apple Music, the huge differences between the two types of platforms quickly influenced our “crate digging” routines and our selection.

In the days that followed that call, in the grip of nostalgia, I went through my old articles, and dove deep into my SoundCloud and Bandcamp likes. I stalked my friends’ collections too and I even poked around my USBs looking for forgotten mp3s. I couldn’t find peace. The realization that, as a writer, I’ve overlooked such an essential (and probably the most entertaining) part of our culture in recent years was triggering me.

Music can be fun […] It seems across the industry this is something that’s becoming forgotten. Whether it’s stuck-up music journalists only highlighting music that’s ground-breaking or thought-provoking, elitist fans judging art solely on predefined metrics, or producers focusing all of their energy on sound design and being forward-thinking, we could all use this simple reminder. Music is meant to be enjoyable. It can be political, inspiring, mind-bending, and life-changing, but it doesn’t always have to be. Sometimes the best music is simple and fun. It makes you smile, dance or single along. This is a passage from Colin’s superlative “Reminder: Music Can Be Fun” editorial, published in 2022. A much-needed reminder for us all that, in the first place, followed the white rabbit deep down into the music world to have fun.

Stumbling into that article was the last drop that convinced me to embrace again this overlooked side of our scene by launching a new dedicated column, here on FUXWITHIT. It won’t be anything fancy or bombastic. Just a straightforward, little project to celebrate that, behind its officialdom, statistics, headlines, and managers, this “music stuff” is still a bootleg business.

Tomorrow, February 21, we’re kicking things off in-house with a b2b selection between me and Colin.
