BTSM is back and better than ever. The Canadian bass-fan favorite are once again stirring up crowds after announcing their third album with the release of the first single, ‘Leaders’, off their own record label, Kannibalen Records.

Black Tiger Sex Machine’s new music and third album has been hotly anticipated by their fans and bass music enthusiasts. Known for infusing bass and electronic music with classic techno or house samples, it comes as no surprise that they dug deep and have cooked up yet another new sound: dubstep and reggae. BTSM have crafted a hybrid of the two, drenched it in bass, and got one of contemporary reggae’s most iconic vocal artists, Alborosie, who is most well known for his hit ‘Kingston Town’ which has a cool 54 million plays on YouTube.

“We did a bit of cratedigging and stumbled upon a 1968 sample from Jamaica’s legendary Studio One. We wanted to find an active MC to complement Al Campbell’s original vocals & melody. Alborosie, known for his massive Kingston Town project, agreed to jumped on it and we’re very happy with the final product!”

‘Leaders’ has a powerful message that echoes BTSM’s iconic post-apocalyptic aesthetic. While past anthems punched up the aggression through bass and synths, ‘Leaders’ has a sultry confidence in its sound. Big bass booms, while the reggae tones whine, and the drops are potent, but it’s really the melody here that creates the irresistible swagger and sway of this reggae-infused dubstep track. This is a unique sound that will both open up a new world of music for those unfamiliar with reggae and its culture, as well as satisfy those music junkies who are hungry to devour classic sounds sewn up in dank bass.

While ‘Leaders’ is now officially released, BTSM has already been playing it at sold out shows. Be sure to catch them including ‘Leaders’ in their sets at Lost Lands, Imagine, and their headliner performance at Red Rocks. Check out the track below and stay tuned for more singles off their upcoming album.

‘Spiders’ is a beast of a banger and showcases some of the raw talent that each group has with the heaviest of bass, but don’t get me wrong- this is not just a demonstration of what your speakers can handle. ‘Spiders’ contains carefully measured doses of chest-rattling treble and the soft caresses of operatics, delivered at staggered paced. Each build up stirs emotion with classic BTSM theatrics including a subtle but ever present heart beat, hair-raising synth swells, and overall air of melancholic, future anarchy. ‘Spiders’ stays nasty with a very gooey, YOOKiE center at the bottom of the big drops, leaving plenty of juice to grip the rail and head-bang to.

Check out this stunner, head-banger below.

The illusive Black Tiger Sex Machine’s exclusive interview came about on a night that was quintessentially in BTSM style. It was Friday the 13th on a dim and dark day in Colorado, a state known for its sunshine, at the Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Well before they announced their fall 2018 tour, which there are whispers could be announced in the next few weeks, BTSM was busy spreading their dark-electro bass on their Ceremony tour. This past April, as the tour was winding down, they made their way from Texas to Colorado, for the last leg.

Half the state was hunkered down for a powerful prairie snow storm, and authorities had shut down the interstate to protect people from driving into a white out without any warning. Where I was, there was cold rain, and heavy storm clouds hovering over the Rocky Mountains. I had to drive north, parallel to the snowstorm, to Fort Collins. I have been at one of their shows every time they have descended from Montreal to tour the states, and on that dark and chilly ride up north, I got the word that I was going to be able to meet them.

I was seeing members of The Church sermonizing to newcomers, bringing them into the fold, telling tales of Lost Lands, and prophecies of EDC Las Vegas.

I arrived at the Aggie Theatre just as Lektrique went on. As I was waiting in line, I overheard some conversations. People were saying which festivals they had seen BTSM at, and how they had discovered them at that last Fort Collins show in 2016. No longer was I hearing jokes about their name, or playful jabs at what kinds of music to expect. I was seeing members of The Church sermonizing to newcomers, bringing them into the fold, telling tales of Lost Lands, and prophecies of EDC Las Vegas. It made me realize just how big BTSM has become, and it is a direct result of their passion for music and their dedication to their fans through performances, and their interactions with them. As always, after their set, the three of them, Marc Chagnon, Patrick Barry, and Julien Miranda, were greeting fans, signing autographs, and telling jokes while taking pictures.

Here’s what we had to ask them about that Friday the 13th performance, what it took to get there, their inspiration and vision for Kannibalen, and what we can expect from Black Tiger Sex Machine in the near future.

How has your Ceremony tour been different than your other North American tours?

It was probably the tour we felt the most in control on. We spend hours and hours refining our tour production from a programming standpoint to get the full show just right. We also expanded the production with the additional of 7x “light sabers” on each side of stage. It really gave a different depth and vibe to the stage. that was more fitting to our vision than past tours.

What has been your favorite performance during Ceremony?

Every show was incredible. It’s awesome to see the fans in each city and see just how much they like to get down. Salt Lake was truly special though, it was the first time we sold out a show before doors for 2500 people. The crowd was so rowdy. It was a perfect way to end the tour!

Tell us about what it took to make it to your Friday the 13th show in Fort Collins.

A 4 hour night of sleep, 12 hours of driving, 3 rest stops, going against the recommendations of east Colorado locals, 40 miles on a dirt road and a whole lot of faith!

The Facebook group, BTSM Church, is super active and allows each of us to connect first hand with fans on a personal basis

You are great with your fans. How would you describe your relationship with your fan base and The Church?

Magical. We feel very connected to them. The Facebook group, BTSM Church, is super active and allows each of us to connect first hand with fans on a personal basis. It’s great to see fans from all countries and states get together and form this giant family.

It’s amazing how you draw inspiration from films like the Terminator series. What are you all time favorite movies?

Marc: Lord of the Rings, Shawshank Redemption and Fifth Element.

Patrick: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Citizen Kane and Gladiator.

Julien: Blade Runner, El Topo and Once Upon A Time In The West.

On your latest album, New Worlds, you have the track ‘Madness’ which has heavy metal, scream-o-like influences. How do you keep the balance when hybridizing rock and electronic music?

We are huge fans of Sullivan King. He’s a such a hard working and driven dude. We really wanted to do something with him when working on the album. None of us were heavy scream-o or metal fans growing up so the final result was heavily influenced by Sullivan with a good mix of our own style.

We love artists who don’t care about blending genres and are willing to step outside of the dancefloor formula.

You have signed a lot of very talented artists to Kannibalen. What sound are you looking for when searching for artists?

We’re open to anything. We love artists who don’t care about blending genres and are willing to step outside of the dancefloor formula. Each of our artists now have their own overall style that they apply to different genres which has been key for us.

What is your vision for Kannibalen records?

We are electronics fans and we can’t get enough it. We hope our taste in music is reflected in Kannibalen. As of now, a first goal is to continue the growth its had over the years. As a stand alone business, it has really come together well. The music is also getting used more and more in television, movies and advertising. A second goal is further establishing the Kannibalen family of artists that have progressed so much together. We can only wish that we continue to help them sustain great careers and live the artist life.

Did you always want to be in music?

No! Coming out of high school, it would have a been a big surprise to all of us that this would be our job today. Our studies all focused on law & business. Patrick was the most musically inclined when we were young. He practiced violin for over 20 years. However, things changed in our late teen years and early 20s as we started going to more shows. Electronic music became a magnet that attracted us from our more “typical” training and jobs.

We are bringing our own lighting technician to a select few festivals for our own twist on their production.

A lot of people are excited to see you return to the festival stage since you announced your performance at Lost Lands. Are you ready for festival season?

Yes we are. We kicked it off with EDC and it was epic. We are bringing our own lighting technician to a select few festivals for our own twist on their production. You can expect even tighter visuals and lighting effects during our performances!

BTSM seems to like coming to Colorado. Will we ever see you at Red Rocks?

Waiting for the right time. We will one day. We must!

Having already played 27 shows this year, the trio seem to be spreading the message of their church with a new fervor.

After releasing ‘Hell Motel’ two weeks ago the frenzy has thickened, and this Thursday March 2nd Black Tiger Sex Machine will be taking the stage at Cervantes in Denver,CO. I expect to be blessed with dirty bass, illuminated by their light displays, and haunted by those helmets. This will be a chance for fans to celebrate the sacred mass of this electrifying style and movement within the new electronic cutting edge.

BTSM has developed a very loyal following that seem to feed off of not only the aggressive tone of their music but also the sense of community. The last show I went to was non-stop, assaulting delectable samples that had me humming and nursing my neck for days. Do not miss out on this unique experience and share in the darkest of bass music. You will want to be initiated when its all over, trust me.

On Saturday, November 26th Town Ballroom held a dark mass headlined by the priests of bass music Black Tiger Sex Machine. MNM Presents helped host with an opener who goes by Dusty Bits and DJ Brother Bear, as well as fellow Kannebalin label mate Dabin.

Brother Bear

In the first set, Brother Bear enticed the early crowd to the dance floor with some percussive vocals, gnashing snares, and pudding-jiggling bass layered under femme-soprano vocals. His instrumental sound was like late night Cartoon Network; bass that was naughty, but still immature like your adult footy pajamas.

Dabin

Up next was Dabin, a very unique and powerful performer that brought in a live guitar on and off throughout his set. He navigated each section as a reptile through still water: rippling bass and shredding dank rifts in the wakes. High flute trills gave his style a retro element that reminded me of old school 80’s power-ballads, especially when the lights flared hot pink and lime green.

After Dabin, quickly the stage went dark, and BTSM’s sermon began with a lot of cursing, taunting and fever-pitch intensity all in complete darkness. The crowd went wild at the jeering from BTSM themselves. Then the echoing chorus of their demonic choir summoned them, tiger helmets and all, to bring down the entire block.

BTSM

The ferocity at which these producers perform is more in line with the punk-rock, and alternative rock scenes. They are jumping and banging, leading by example, working the crowd without voicing instructions, just excellent mixing.

BTSM

The music was non-stop, and the bass was heavy, dirty-dank, and dripping. Its not loud but gigantic, billowing over the faithful. Its hard to imagine that this concert can be described this way even though it was held in near darkness. The lack of spotlighting on the artists’s humanity allowed for a suspension of belief, and the congregation was able to see them as embodiments of the music.

BTSM

BTSM did not disappoint the music-ADD freak that I am and provided an altar of classic and contemporary electronic covers. These included Daft Punks ‘Technologic’, Benny Benassi’s ‘Satisfaction’, Flux Pavilion’s ‘Bass Cannon’, Breach’s ‘JACK’, as well as a remix of the classic ‘Funeral March’. The ceaselessness of the set was not completely uncivilized, but militant and even experimental with some tracks including samples of broken glass, and flavors of reggae. Black Tiger Sex Machine proved to be the salvation for dark electronic music with their dedication to their aesthetic and density of talent in their live performance.

BTSM

The sanctified trio that is Black Tiger Sex Machine has been throbbing through my speakers all year since their single ‘Religion’ was released in late 2015. Their presence in the bass music scene has been slowly building, and is now thrumming up against my friend’s ear drums. We are attending our first dark mass tonight November 26th, at Buffalo, NY’s Town Ballroom.

Their supreme and aphotic style has garnered them a reputation amongst dark electronic fans and dubstep diehards. Their label, Kannebalin, has been praised as the savior of dark electro and bass music against the threat of commercialization. The prophetic producers hail from Montreal, where they have been harboring their energy for a tour that has been putting audiences on notice.

From deciphering the scrolls I can tell you that their light show is a sophisticated altar to their Cat-Cerberus set. I’ll confess, I’d do all sorts of penance to get a peek at their thought process behind their latest album, Welcome to Our Church, but mystically they declined an interview (possibly due to a vow of silence).

Check out Town Ballroom’s website for tickets and more information. To study the texts and see what you might be in for check out Black Tiger Sex Machine’s Facebook.

Check out their latest free download here. Below is an unholy remix EP.
