Buunshin is one of those artists that people have followed from a distance for far too long. The Rotterdam-based artist got his start on ABIS and IMANU’s DIVIDID back in 2019, and quickly gained momentum with official remixes for Phace and Noisia as well as IMANU. That’s around the time I first started getting into drum and bass, and my palette for it wasn’t fully developed so Buunshin remained on the edges of my radar for a bit. It was only when the artist collaborated with IMANU for the first time on ‘Overwerk’ via mau5trap that I started to pay more attention, and when ‘Trauma’ dropped on Inspected in early 2020, I was hooked. It has been an incredible journey following Buunshin’s evolution, and it is one that more people need to be following.

2022 has served as a breakout year for the talented producer, both in terms of recognition across the scene and in terms of sonic transformation. From a collaboration with DJ Fresh, to a gnarly remix for The Upbeats, to the addictive ‘Forget About Me,’ Buunshin has continued to broaden his horizons, all leading to his biggest project to date, Steel Wings. Released via Critical Music, a welcome home to his larger collections, the six-track EP is Buunshin’s most diverse and impressive undertaking thus far in his career.

“All the music which will follow will be more personal. Rather than just making hard music for in the club, I tried to reflect something vulnerable. Just like the way I felt broken, I wanted the music to sound broken. However, to me that didn’t mean that I wanted it to sound dark and cold, I wanted it to sound warm and bright,” the artist states about Steel Wings, and he executed this vision to perfection. The opener, ‘Farewell,’ introduces this dichotomy with grace, with a drawn out, melancholic soundscape embodying the closing of a chapter in its first half. However, the second half of the track represents a rebirth in sound with its euphoric drum and bass energy shining a new light on the artist. Listening through Steel Wings, one will grow a thorough appreciation for Buunshin’s versatility in production as well as his masterful storytelling abilities. While the project still falls under the umbrella of drum and bass, the artist displays multiple facets of the genre, and goes beyond it in tracks such as ‘Man Know’ and ‘Tranen’.

My personal favourite from Steel Wings is ‘Make Money,’ a surprise collaboration with The Caracal Project. What’s yours? Dive in below and let us know.

Late last year, industry veterans The Upbeats released their sixth studio album, Not Forever, via the Noisia-founded VISION Recordings. In the thirteen-track endeavour, the duo paired their experience in the scene with their ceaselessly innovative approach to deliver an incredibly well-rounded ensemble that transcends genres. With ‘Realm’ being a personal favourite from the collection and each of the tracks providing a different kind of rush, fans of electronic music are sure to find a gem of their own. Now looking to breathe a second wind into the project, The Upbeats have tapped seven artists to remix select tracks from the album, giving life to Not Forever Reimagined.

Altogether, Not Forever Reimagined is one of the most impressive remix albums we’ve come across in a long time. Heavily leaning towards drum and bass but nicely complemented by a mind-melting breaks remix from Nitepunk and a bass brute from Jon Casey, the collection of tracks is one jaw-dropping feat after the other. Upgrade does incredible justice to ‘Realm’ before PhaseOne surprises with a clean drum and bass cut of ‘Beams.’ Following Nitepunk’s contribution that is so good it must be mentioned twice, Buunshin shows he could produce hip hop just as well as drum and bass, using Armanni Reign’s vocals in ‘Villains Cowl’ to unleash production mastery. Monty’s mesmerizing, quintessential style drives the energy in his take on ‘Beams’ while FUXWITHIT favourites Jon Casey and Rohaan close out the remix pack just as energetically as it opened.

Not Forever Reimagined is a must-listen. Don’t miss it below.

“Over the years, not many of our tracks have been remixed. With the end of Noisia nearby, we want to give our catalog to as many producers as possible. Allowing the music to echo and hear it’s resonance.”

Perhaps one of the only good things about the ongoing pandemic is the continuous delaying of the inevitable dismantling of Noisia. Meant to come to a close in 2020, Noisia have been keeping their last flame alive throughout the pandemic with releases such as ‘Supersonic (My Existence)‘ and through shows that have repeatedly been postponed. As the flame slowly starts to dwindle to mere nothingness, a new flicker of light has arrived in the form of unexpected remixes for a handful of Noisia tracks from a slew of incredible artists. Titled The Resonance I, the project sees nine talented artists offer their rendition of eight quintessential Noisia tracks from classic projects such as Split The Atom (Special Edition), Purpose, and more.

Honestly, Noisia could not have selected a better ensemble of artists to do their works justice. Malux kicks things off with a euphoric remix of ‘Could This Be,’ keeping this high-octane intensity of the original while adding his own distinct touch. IMANU comes next with a wicked take on ‘Incessant,’ demonstrating the artist’s keen attention to detail and mechanical precision with sound. Beefing up the middle of the remix pack are Levela with his take on ‘Stamp Out,’ The Caracal Project and Grey Code with their snappy flip of ‘Tommy’s Theme,’ Skylark with another heater sure to set dance floors ablaze, and Buunshin with an industrial-like manipulation of ‘Purpose.’ While the album leans heavily into drum and bass, Chee offers his unique halftime touch to ‘Reptilians’ with grueling sound design and pounding percussion. Finally, Posij lends an uplifting, club-ready hand to ‘Lekker,’ a piece released through one of Noisia’s aliases, Hustle Athletics.

And, if these remixes aren’t enough to brighten your week, the album title suggests there’s more to come. Don’t miss The Resonance I below.

A constant front-runner in pushing boundary-breaking bass music to the masses, Inspected truly never disappoint. Without constraining themselves to a particular genre, the UK-based collective have been able to simultaneously mold the popularity of unconventional electronic music and bring underground talents to the limelight, most notably through their scarce yet substantial Powered by Inspected compilation series. Pairing industry veterans with promising up-and-coming artists has given previous instalments a very approachable appeal, and Inspected are well on their way to accomplishing this feat once again with the third collection due on Friday.

Lucky data:base subscribers have already gotten their hands on the sixteen-track journey that is Powered by Inspected #3, but since the tracks are slowly appearing on SoundCloud, we figured we’d highlight these early and get you prepared for what’s to come. Netherlands-based Buunshin led the way in high gear early last week with the menacing ‘Trauma’ that is equally sinister as it is mesmerizing. The attention to detail throughout the neurofunk monster is unparalleled, and kicks off the compilation in style.

Similarly awe-inducing but in a completely different way, Hudson Lee and Tom Finster provide an expedition through bass music with their contribution to the collection of tracks. ‘Flymmer’ draws on the beauty of melody and simplicity in the opening moments to lure you in, before blurring the lines between genres as the track progresses. Both musical and gritty, the pair of producers have crafted a grandiose, ethereal piece that exquisitely contrasts the opening single.

Enigmatic bass aficionado Protial followed with a track that is quintessential to his style. ‘All Caps’ is quick to the punch, featuring everything that we love about his inimitable signature sound. Repeated vocal samples, mind-bending synths and crisp percussion all arranged in a hypnotizing manner provide Protial’s welcome introduction to Inspected.

The last piece released at the beginning of last week was Monuman‘s ‘Hurts When I’m With You,’ sampling the popular ‘I Wanna Be Down’ by Brandy in a rather unusual way. A slow yet ominous bass ballad, ‘Hurts When I’m With You’ builds gradually in a soul-stirring fashion, before the vocal samples are juggled in the latter half to give listeners a sense of familiarity all while remaining mysterious and captivating.

With Vellum curing your Monday blues with the unique, highly-anticipated bass house belter titled ‘Bungle‘ and the promise of more from Chee, COPYCATT, and RefraQ among others, fans are in for a real treat. If the range and versatility in these early singles are any indication, Powered by Inspected #3 is an early contender for compilation of the year. Stay tuned for more soon.
