Deep within the depths of San Marcos, CAB has completely taken the underground by storm. His highly skilled abilities have guided him down a path of excitement and adventure. Soaring through the sonic spectrum with great determination and confidence. Delivering his audience experiences like no other. From mind-bending sound design to colossal-sounding drums, the surprises are endless throughout his discography of priceless artifacts of sound. And it’s with our great pleasure to welcome him with a brand new and exclusive mix and interview! So buckle up, because this one’s about to take you on a heart-pulsing ride!

First off, thank you for taking the time to join us! How’ve you been doing recently?

Doing well just staying busy, been planning out the rest of the year music-wise while tackling my last year of undergrad. Nonetheless, thank you for having me stoked to be a part of this legendary mix series.

Diving into this mix, what can listeners expect to hear throughout this journey? What was the main vision for it?

Diving into this mix the listener can expect to hear some favorites along with some unreleased but in all the listener can expect to hear xtreme dance music. While curating I wanted to emulate what it would potentially sound/feel like going to see CAB live.

How and when did the CAB project start? What’s the history behind this adventure?

CAB is actually my initials so you could say since birth lol. But ultimately I started off djing when I was 12. I loved playing on my Numark mixdeck express after school. Fast forward 8 years later I made the commitment to pursue production and curate a deeper vision for CAB. For better or worse the world paused due to the pandemic, but luckily it just gave me so much time to work on my project with every day felt like a day in the hyperbolic time chamber.

Were you self-taught or did you have a mentor in the beginning in terms of production?

I was kind of a mix of everything but having a lot of time did help out a lot with my production. Of course, YouTube was a big help but I think ultimately studying other artists and analyzing the music that I enjoyed helped me in the beginning. Not only with music but also with the representation and storytelling of a piece/pieces.

From releasing on Sable Valley, Alter/Ego, and more, what are some labels you’d love to team up with in the future and why?

A couple of labels I’d love to work with in the future would be MONTA and NIGHTMODE. Boombox is a huge inspiration of mine since there’s not many people of Mexican culture in the scene. As a Hispanic person seeing Boombox tour the world really inspires me. NIGHTMODE releases dope records that all seem to have a nocturnal vibe to them. I feel like my music could blend well with their culture so I think it would be fun.

Going into your production style, what makes a track have that special CAB magic?

I feel that what makes a CAB track special is my groove/percussion. I try to make my music become a movie for your ears. So using trap patterns with cinematic drums is bound to put the listener in a hype state. Secondly, I think the use of sampling ties in heavy with my production style, coming from djing it’s dope to see the huge significance sampling has had on the game. Not only with hip hop, sampling was also a technique used by my electronic heroes DAFT PUNK, and THE PRODIGY.

Are there any artists you’ve been listening to recently that should be known more?

A homie from San Diego actually, BADLIKE. Dope dude with killer music, I feature his body breaker remix in the mix xD

Growing up, what kind of music were you listening to before electronic that still inspires you today?

Growing up I was exposed to so many kinds of music thanks to movies/video games. Music that I was really into though before EDM was rock. Specifically hardcore, from the positive morals the culture carried to the hard breakdowns, I truly believe that without the exposure to hardcore rock then I would not be the artist I am today.

What are some goals you wish to fulfill by the end of this year?

Some goals I hope to fulfill would be to get some more shows and get some records placed with some dope labels :)

Being from San Marcos, has the environment inspired your art from the past to now?

I would say San Marcos has inspired me so much. Quick fact, BROCKHAMPTON first HQ was here and a lot of the foundation for BROCKHAMPTON was made here in San Marcos. Knowing that those dudes made their dreams happen while battling similar circumstances(work, school, parents) gives me nothing but hope. Highly recommend checking out their YouTube episodes they did with Noisey.

We noticed you also have a love and passion for videography and graphic design! Tell us how those interests came into your life!

Since I was in high school I would beg my mom for the vhs camcorder she had luckily when I moved to San Marcos for college she gave me it. Since that moment, my love for analog quickly aspired. Putting together clips started to become easier so I wanted to challenge myself with graphic design. Again like production the use of YouTube helped out with learning. knowing these two trades makes my vision so much stronger and fun. Being able to create a visual concept of your song is dope.

If you could go back in time to your younger self, what advice would you bestow?

If I could go back in time, I would probably tell myself not to stress too much about life after 18, since there’s going to be a pandemic that makes everything before the pandemic seem like it never happened….

Any final words you want to tell the listeners and readers out there?

If you made it to this sentence I seriously appreciate you. I do this for you and the overall culture. I hope I inspire you guys as much as you all inspire me to keep going. XDM fam pyke out <3

Making a massive debut with Quality Goods Records, CAB initiates hyperdrive with his newest single, ‘xDREAM.’ An unexpected and gorgeous piece containing a new sound to the project while incorporating his signature style. Classic trap characteristics combined with futuristic tones create an inner awakening throughout your soul. Opening up your third eye with its impactful melodies and hard-hitting drum designs. Making this one of his best works to date. So prepare to embark on a blissful journey through angelic emotion with a message many can relate to.

Fallen relationships and hope for the youth have been the leading factors for my inspiration. The narrative behind the record is having constant recollections of a past relationship specifically in a dream. Thus inspiring the overall title ‘xDREAM’ a dream about an ex. The record is meant to be emotional considering the narrative but I hope to convey a sense of hope through the help of the heavy drop and the main vocal which says ‘I will run with you till we fall.’ indicating that although the relationship may be over there will forever remain an unbreakable bond between the two partners. – CAB

‘xDREAM’ takes you through a cycle of a purely heartfelt dream. Whisking you through the pain and sorrow, but ending up in a hopeful state of mind. Empowering many to keep going throughout life in the form of wave-infused sound design mixed with spine-tingling drums. Not to mention the colorful vocal he incorporates ties the meaning altogether in an unbreakable knot. Representing a bond that will never break no matter the cost.

The way CAB guides his listeners through his sonic environments is nothing but unique and memorable. Complimenting the evolution of his vision as well as the label’s newest chapter. A rare and delicate message in the form of a constant state of high energy makes this a feeling you’ll want to replay over and over again. So make sure to show your support by streaming ‘xDREAM’ everywhere via Quality Goods Records!

Today is a very special day for the Sable Valley family. Taking us back in time, their debut compilation, Sable Valley Summer Vol. 1 changed the way you looked at electronic music. It took every breath out of your body with each given moment. Incredible artists, banging beats, and more. The album skyrocketed not only the label, but its artists as well. So today, they’re initiating stage two in their master plan to push the electronic music scene towards greater territories.

Sable Valley Summer Vol. 2 is a highly impressive and sophisticated crafted body of work. Each track holding their own spirit and vision for this movement. And what better way to increase the journey than by gathering some of the most unique musicians within the scene to participate. Veterans such as RL Grime & Montell2099, Cozway, Rossy, capshun, and others have returned to leave yet another mark of madness on their diverse audience. But we also notice brand new faces! Heavy up and comers CAB, Rohaan, Lizdek and much more have also been chosen to take on the challenge and help build a better tomorrow for the label and their own visions! So strap in those seatbelts, because if you thought you weren’t ready for the first installment, you have another thing coming with this nuclear explosion for evolution.

Sable Valley Summer Vol. 2 contains some of the most forward-driven art you’ll ever experience within this industry. Bringing out every artist’s special and highly charismatic characteristics to the max and beyond. From futuristic atmospheres, mind-bending sound design, and more, each piece is an unforgettable journey. Purely crafted from angel tears and cybernetic upgrades. The artists put in their all to help create yet another perfect album of gems. You’ll have your heart dropped while still trying to take everything in. But that’s what the replay button is for!

After this, you’ll go back over and over again to catch every little detail missed because there is a ton and then some.

July is passing us by and that means it’s time for a fresh installment of Focus Five. As always we’ve got a diverse offering for you to explore. Our 42nd edition features a new trap heavy-hitter, an artist wowing us with fresh flips, a double dose of DnB, and a British producer who “writes songs to make you feel like nothing really matters.” What more could you ask for? Dive in below.

Bon-Psy

Your favourite artist’s favourite artist could probably be your favourite artist, too. Something that I’ve learned over the years is that the influence and inspiration that drives great artists usually come from like-minded individuals or groups that push boundaries in a similar fashion. Now, I’m not saying that Bon-Psy is David Gotham‘s favourite artist, but it surely means something to bring on the UK-based producer as the sole remixer of his debut single. After being introduced to Bon-Psy through his remix of ‘Enter, The Hole Divine (Part I),’ a quick dive into his brief yet impressive discography revealed a fresh approach to production that reminds me of a crossover between Rome in Silver and music one would hear on Inspected. It’s equally groovy as it is complex, with combinations of electronic and acoustic elements often coming together to create rich, emotional soundscapes. Being consistently unique is not easy, but Bon-Psy has got it on lock.

CAB

Hailing from San Marcos, Texas, an upcoming and dangerous weapon is taking the spotlight with every release. And discovering his art has been a stroke of pure destiny for us. We’re proud to introduce the icon in the making, CAB. A heavy-hitter you do not want to sleep on.

Powerful sound design, nasty drum creations, you name it! This artist knows no boundaries when manipulating the spectrum. His grasp and shining touch on the trap movement is truly like no other. Separating his creative world from the rest. And standing out as one of the most intricate and unique creators to date. CAB has appeared on a couple of labels so far such as Wicked Records and Gridlock Records! Both tracks are simply astounding and will have your jaw dropped the entire time. And his newest piece, ‘RAVEx’ dropped not too long ago and pays homage to the next step for the trap environment. Integrating some of the finest techniques used for electronic music. So go make sure to support this everlasting spirit, because he’s got some very interesting works of art coming in the future!

Simen Sez

I have a confession. Up until a few weeks ago, I was sleeping on Simen Sez. I don’t know why, but I can assure that ‘Una Cerveza – RIP’ woke me up. The soulful, infectious and breezy remix of MF Doom’s ‘One Beer’ is an expertly tasteful homage to the late legend. It’s a warm-weather party starter that’s understated but impeccable. Needless to say the flip left me thirsty for more bops from the Milwaukee-based producer. If you’re in the mood for flips too, ‘Gusto (Hot Wind Blows Remix)’ and ‘Peaches (Afro Remix)’ are sure to satisfy your needs. Looking for more grooves? The Jaca Beats assisted ‘Eu to Correndo’ mixes house and Baile for a fresh vibe that’ll get you moving. Given that 3 of the 4 tracks mentioned dropped in the span of a month it’s safe to Simen Sez is one to watch.

YAANO

I’m really going deep down the D&B hole this year. Not that I wasn’t already listening enough drum & bass before, but thanks to some fresh names that we all know very well (Rohaan, gyrofield, IMANU, Tom Finster) I’ve approached the genre from a completely different perspective and it feels like I went back to the days I was a rookie in the scene. With every track I find it’s surprise after surprise that brings back a feeling of playfulness and extreme curiosity that had faded a little. YAANO was one of the last names I discovered during my SoundCloud explorations. In spite of all those who comment “where’s the real dnb?”, YAANO churns out quality drum & bass, ranging back and forth between the many shades of the genre but never losing his touch. From his debut appearance on Overview via the Zone 2 compilation to the gem of the Blossom EP and after there’s just quality work all around!

YOSHUU

It’s about time for another one of my bets! So far I’m quite sure I didn’t fail a single one, (you can check previous volumes of Focus Five here to prove me wrong) and I’m strongly convinced this one will be no exception. Those you see below are the only two public releases on YOSHUU‘s profile but they speak loud of the potential of this Romanian producer who I’m sure will make important moves in the future. His sound might not share the same crazy inventiveness of other generational champions yet, but it’s built on the same contemporary approach to drum & bass of which I’m a huge fan of. Given that they released both these two tracks, it’s fair to say DIVIDID’s team is a huge fan too, which is an endorsement that can’t go unnoticed. However, as professional music nerds, you should accept suggestions but also make up your mind by yourself. So don’t wait any longer and dive into YOSHUU’s music right here.
