At times geographic constraints can hinder the ability of two artists to successfully tackle a project together. Due to the disparity in time zones, language barriers and the struggles of communicating exclusively through digital means, the arena of collaborations can dwindle as artists toil through excessive hoops to make things work.

In contrast, a mutual origin of Perth has provided an ample foundation for friendship and collaboration between Australia-natives CALIBR and ÈL J as depicted through the mesmerizing synergy and beautiful coalition of styles in ‘Tendril’.

“We first met on SoundCloud, right around the time I was finishing my high school exams about 2 years ago,” Calibr reveals. “We both lived in the same city so we just started hanging out, showing each other our latest tracks and hitting shows together,” J continues, “[‘Tendril’] came together really well. We managed to get the main ideas down within a couple of days and the rest just flowed from there.”

The interconnectivity between the two takes shape wonderfully as each layer of the track is peeled back. Graceful piano chords and the nostalgic hoots of an adolescent child entwine sentiment and raw emotion within a simple introduction, which flourishes seamlessly into a glowing upbeat tempo of drums. A perplexing breakdown combined expertly with left-to-right audio panning builds sensational dark energy as the track reaches a crescendo, a divine chanting provides a momentary, ominous pause before a flood of sinewy, wavering synths let loose.

“This project came together really well! We managed to get the main ideas down within a couple of days and the rest just flowed from there,” J shares. A harmonious combination to say the least, ‘Tendril’ composes the strengths of the two promising young producers, while leaving plenty of space to experiment with darker energy within the track and demonstrates massive collective growth that leaves me eagerly anticipating the next opportunity for the pair to combine forces.

Take a stroll through august fields of riveting synths in CALIBR & ÈL J’s latest and be sure to grab the free download of ‘Tendril’ here!

With a hometown such as Perth, Australia prevision for an inexplicable production talent soars with latest to poke his head from the land down under CALIBR. Having thoroughly demonstrated an eye for innovation with a rework of Kuren’s ‘This Still Hurts’ early on his career, it comes as no real surprise that his latest interpretation of ‘Gemini’ by What So Not would set the bar even higher.

Released nearly 4 years ago at a time when the trap genre was still in its beginnings, ‘Gemini’ provided a beacon of hope that a more melodic side of the genre can just as easily coexist with the emphasis on production that gives the genre its individuality. A song that has received such overwhelming recognition, an opportunity for a fresh face to lace modern potency presents an invigorating future for a track the community has grown to love wholeheartedly.

The slightest production intricacies and light percussion present exquisite enrichment to the nostalgic introduction to the track. As the melody reaches its second loop, pulsating energy craftily builds into an electrifying riser, which brings the track to a peak, launching into a cascade of obscure echoing synths and the tantalizing angelic harmony courtesy of George Maple.

Expertly implementing the most crucial features of the original, while providing an unmistakable dark, ominous energy through his own brilliance, CALIBR breathes new life into a What So Not classic.
