Despite the fact Mariah Carey memes have started to make their reappearance online, the good season is far from being over. We still have a full month of summer ahead of us! Days and nights packed with parties, pre-parties, after-parties, BBQs, raves, festivals, car trips, bonfires, and everything in the middle. Your USBs and playlists still need to be in perfect shape, filled with heaters for this final rush.

If you’re running short of aces up your sleeve, well, this Bootleg Business Summer Special got you covered. No guest this time, just me and an extended selection of twenty of the best (unofficial) remixes and edits I had on heavy rotation over the past months. Expect some brand-new releases, some classics and some weird stuff by the likes of Baauer, Darby, Hans Gadler, ethanplus, paul mond, Farrah, Chopsoe, and many more. The playlist is split into two parts. The first is focused on bouncy, groovy genres while the second is heavier and more bass-focused.

Have fun!

“Bootleg Remixes Used to Be Frowned Upon — Now They’re Turning Songs Into Chart Hits.” This is not an ordinary title. This is the title of an article published on Billboard a few days ago (thanks Colin for sending it my way). What did I tell you? The music business is still a bootleg business. I spent some time on TikTok while scouting tracks for this second volume and let me tell you, among the enormous quantity of horrible slap house remixes, sped-up versions, and hyper-compressed drift phonk bangers, there’s tons of fun stuff. No other social media platform has ever been so prolific on this side. Now, we’re not here to break the next viral hit, but I can assure you this month we’re providing you with ten gems you really should add to your collection and USBs. And who better than camoufly could join me in this mission? Not only is he a pro SoundCloud digger, but he himself has delivered some memorable remixes and edits over the years. Fresh from his brand new EP In Plain Sight and the seventh edition of his Glittertape mix series, with no surprise camoufly’s selection was filled with baile vibes. I answered back with some funk too, plus some dancefloor fillers and a very special mash-up to close this second volume of Bootleg Business in style.

zack fox – only thing on my mind (two step verified)

This is one of the best discoveries of 2023 for me, freshly released just a couple of weeks ago. Shout out to swami sound and gum.mp3, I just love it when ideas like these come to life and make so much sense. Truly a gem.

ENVOLVENCIA FUTURISTA NA SELVA [[ DJ RAMEMES ]] RUMBLE REMIX

My SoundCloud feed has been splattered with DJ RaMeMes’s tracks lately. I keep seeing him literally everywhere, among everyone’s liked tracks. I took that as I sign that I had to include him in this volume. On top of that, it’s finally safe again to share Skrillex remixes, and this version of ‘Rumble’ is pure, beautiful chaos.

CHARGÉ (ISOxo EDIT) [A-OLO Baile Flip]

Honestly, I didn’t even know I could pick something like this, but here we are. Love this tune to death. It’s just insane. I didn’t even know the ISOxo flip could be turned to another level. But it actually happened. I can’t wait to play this one live.

Mr Oizo – Flat Beat (Jamie Hai Remix)

Sometimes I still wonder how Mr Oizo’s ‘Flat Beat’ has become such a mainstream sensation. It slaps, that’s for sure. But from being a great dancefloor tune to being used as the soundtrack for a Levi’s ad, the gap is huge. Anyway, this remix by Jamie Hai raises the bpm and splashes over the iconic wobbling bass with a good dose of frenetic groove, turning ‘Flat Beat’ into an even more lethal dancefloor weapon.

This one is from my close friend 6amsunset. He does random things like this one every once in a while. and they turn out to be little underground masterpieces. Yea, you can say he’s a genius.

Daft Punk – Indo SIlver Club (Infiltrator Regroove)

I was very surprised to not see a Daft Punk bootleg among camoufly’s picks, so I’m personally making up for it. I honestly didn’t know the term “regroove” existed and I have no idea what it actually means, but this one is a gem for sample nerds. Infiltrator has created his own version of ‘Indo Silver Club’ by blending together samples from the Daft Punk’s original cut and DJ Falcon and Thomas Bangalter’s ‘Together’.

Skrillex & Bobby Raps – Leave Me Like This (Darby Remix)

My good friend Darby decided to pop off his 2023 with this Skrillex remix and honestly, even if I’ve been there sending feedback and whatnot through the process, I love how it turned out to be. Another 2023 gem.

Flo Rida x T-Pain – Low [EOTI FLIP]

I had the chance to test this flip live the past weekend and I can assure you that it goes off! You might see some perplexed faces in the first seconds due to the (very) arrogant in-the-face kick but they won’t last long. They’ll either start dancing like animals or they will leave the dancefloor. Don’t worry, it’s natural selection. Meanwhile, be sure you have this flip in your collections.
– A

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1408790389″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

SWIM – Say It Right

This last one is special for me. I love it when I find out about these super high-energy songs that carry so much emotion with them. And this is a prime example of it. It’s like SWIM really gave Nelly Furtado’s vocals a new life. Hard to not shed a tear.
– C

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1257925837″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Beyoncé X Stardust – Break My Soul (Sango Mix)

I know this is “just” a mash-up, but come on, it’s genius. The title says it all. Beyoncé’s voice singing over ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ may sound bizarre, but somehow everything works almost perfectly. It’s not really an unknown edit (almost 80k plays on SoundCloud) but I found it just a few days ago. It clearly has that “closing track” feeling and in fact it closes my b2b with camoufly.

“Sweet reminder that you can not only remix all my music, but I invite you to download any song illegally if you don’t want to buy them. I’m serious, I won’t mind.”

This is definitely not something we’re used to seeing written by a music producer, but talking about camoufly, well, this is the norm. After all, if you are a long-time fan, you know very well that the “anonymous producer,” if it makes sense to use this term anymore, lives within his own world with his own rules. “I feel I’m just doing my thing, what I feel without overthinking” he once responded to me when pointing out that both his music and persona are one of a kind. And it’s exactly this genuineness that I always identify as the basis of his success. In addition, of course, to off-the-chart talent and a brilliant brain. Genuineness is often wrongly juxtaposed with naivety, but never this juxtaposition could be more wrong than in the case of camoufly. I’ve never encountered an artist so aware of the tools and possibilities at his disposal.

Musical and technological trends continue to mutate at breakneck speed but he rarely misses an opportunity to test and experiment. This approach has translated equally into the purely creative sphere, where camoufly has had no qualms about embracing the most disparate genres, always remaining anchored to the cornerstone of his personality. One of which is certainly his passion (or better, fixation) for the art of sampling, a theme we have discussed in depth in our previous interviews.

If with the end of the triptych of EPs consisting of Apotheosis, Giant, and Faith, his discography had already taken on considerable size, impact, and cultural depth, with the arrival of this new EP camoufly takes a further quantum leap. Between anticipation, trivia, memes, and minimeters the last few weeks have been the usual rollercoaster that prepared us for this brand-new experience. New music, new look but no face reveal… yet.

In Plain Sight, is the (clever) name chosen by camoufly for his fourth EP, which features a set of four tunes and a whole new aesthetic look for the brand. On the music side, the project follows the footprints of the two singles that anticipated it, ‘Kaleidoscope’ and ‘Earthbound’. A combination that does not deviate excessively from the “classic” camoufly flair, but takes a flat-out dancefloor approach. It might be a stretch, but I spy a pretty significant French touch influence in this EP. Although all the songs sound far cleaner than most of the music that came out in the 10s, in these uptempo four-on-the-floor rhythms which pound arrogantly under patterns of cheesy, glittery synths I hear echos of Cassius and Simian Mobile Disco. The extra thick basses instead directly reminded me of a quote in which Gaspard Aùge (one-half of Justice) said, “I’ve always been obsessed with making larger than life music […] mostly because it’s more fun”. Be it ‘Kaleidoscope’, ‘Always’, ‘Baby’, or ‘Earthbound’, the basslines are always so bouncy that sound like they’re about to explode and make the entire world jump. A trait they have in common with the bursting enthusiasm camoufly is showing in the promotion of In Plain Sight. At this point, I’ve been following him for many years, and I swear I’ve never seen him so satisfied, proud, and happy with his music. For what concerns the vocals (one more inspired than the other) and his new (questionable) fashion choices, I pass the buck to camoufly himself.

Welcome to the first volume of Bootleg Business, a brand-new FUXWITHIT original column, that celebrates the unsung art of unofficial remixes. Every month I’ll go back to back with a guest, showcasing a selection of our favorite edits, dubs, or whatever you want to call them. This will be a space free from the pressure to keep up with new music. Our guests will be free to dig into their libraries for long-forgotten gems as well as select the hit of the moment. Strictly unofficial.

For this pilot episode, we decided to kick things off in-house with a b2b between me and FUXWITHIT’s very own Colin aka classyvlassy. He’s a true basshead, so expect some trap bangers from his selection, alongside some hip hop and even drum&bass. From my side, I couldn’t resist selecting some well-known cuts but I believe you won’t be disappointed (the obscure stuff will come in the next episodes, trust me). Also, don’t worry, we don’t have any ‘Rumble’ edits.

Rude Boy (Klean Remix)

Hold on and read what I have to say before rage-quitting this article. I know this remix has almost half a million plays on SoundCloud alone and has been spammed all over the internet in the past week. But that’s exactly the reason why it’s here. It perfectly embodies the spirit of this column. Think about it: the most talked about moment of 2023’s Super Bowl (musically speaking) has been an unofficial edit uploaded by a Brazillian teenager on his SIDE ACCOUNT, with just a few thousand followers. Crazy, eh? I’ll say it one more time, unofficial creations keep the music world fresh and exciting. That’s why I wanted to open Bootleg Business with this track. It’s its manifesto.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1018139671″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

CLB – Bootlegs [002]

The title alone makes this a must for our selections. Chicago’s CLB is well known for his ability to give tracks he loves a darker and dirtier spin, and that’s just what he delivers on his second release of bootlegs. The 3-track offering sees CLB flipping tracks from Kunta Kinte, Skelecta x Distinkt, and Wiley Cat. The pack provides an insight into the sounds that influence the artist, shines a light on often-overlooked underground gems, and simply fucking bangs. Exploring the realms of 140 and grime, the icy bangers are built for dingy basements and beastly sound systems. Those looking to embrace the dark recesses of bass music will be delighted. Fans hoping for pop-friendly EDM bops will be frightened. Bootlegs [002] is yet another example of why we love CLB.

Dennis Ferrer – Hey Hey (camoufly Remix)

The first time I heard this remix I was languishing in a complete hangover after one of the many nights out during ADE. Once I heard the drop, I was reborn, ready for another party. This remix is a certified banger. It hits harder than a bottle of Jäger gulped down in one breath. When thinking about ‘Hey Hey’ I used to recall the sensual house vibes of the original or the hyperactive disco groove of the Riva Starr remix. Now all I can think about is me fighting for my life in a mosh-pit. Good job camoufly.

Fred again.. – Kammy (like i do) (So Dope Bootleg)

So Dope flexes his talents as a remixer with a unique flip of Fred again’s ‘Kammy (like i do).’ The fresh take embodies all of the emotion of the original while injecting a distinct level of knock. The original vocals tie the track together as So Dope adds in lush pads and beefed-up drums before exploring three unique drops. Moving from trap, to club and wave, this bootleg truly checks all of the boxes, making it primed to ring off at clubs without sacrificing any of the feels.

Polarkreis 18 – Allein, Alene feat. Nephew (Voliik remix)

Let’s go step by step. I’m a huge fan of Eric Prydz. His remix of ‘Allein Allein’ is one of my favorite tracks from him and it made me fall in love with these vocals. Voliik is one of the most fascinating and skilled producers I know. What could go wrong with the combination of all these elements? Voliik’s electro treatment is brutal and extreme as always, but it perfectly matches the adrenaline rush triggered by the vocals, in this version sung by the Danish band Nephew. Indeed, this is actually a remix of a rework of the original Polarkreis 18′ song. Confused? Read the SoundCloud description for the full, beautiful story behind this remix.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/829202374″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Lil Yachty – Poland (Formula & Nautika Bootleg)

I’ll admit that I’m a bit behind on this one. Released late last year, Formula & Nautika take Lil Yachty’s ‘Poland’ into the world of DnB. Let me start by saying this really shouldn’t be this good. That’s not a knock on Formula & Nautika’s talents because they prove them in stripes. It’s just rare that a DnB flip of a SoundCloud rap hit sounds this well crafted. Yachty’s addictive and simplistic vocals make it feel instantly familiar but the way they’re bent and stretched creates melodic layers that are damn near spiritual. The drops hit with maximum impact while still remaining infectious and uplifting. This song is simply too much fun. Don’t blame me if this is stuck on repeat for the foreseeable future.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1380156163″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Mr. Carmack – lean on rmx (1great dane totally helped too)

Here’s another widely popular, or I should probably say iconic, remix. I’ve been sharing this version of ‘Lean On’ left and right for six years now, it would simply be a crime to not include it in Bootleg Business. Long life to Carmack (and Great Dane too) for this gem and for that album full of random beats he dropped in 2017.

PRYZMS – TALES FROM THE DIRTY SOUTH RE:MIXTAPE

What happens when you flip Atlanta rap classics into hard-hitting bass cuts? ATL native PRYZMS decided to find out and we couldn’t be more grateful for it. Leaning into his early influences, TALES FROM THE DIRTY SOUTH RE:MIXTAPE is a love letter to the iconic sounds of his city that also show off his undeniable skills. Blistering trap and bass is elevated by vocal samples from rap staples that include ‘In The A,’ ‘Kryptonite,’ ‘Dirty South,’ ‘ATLiens’ and more. This is untapped SoundCloud gold that’s ripe for mining. Bask in the sonic riches.

SOOHAN – Missy Tribute

“A supercut of Missy Elliot’s hardest lines running atop a selection of Timbaland’s best cuts.” This is how SOOHAN himself described this cut, and to be honest, it’s pretty self explicative. There’s nothing much to add about the song (it slaps!) but I can’t stress you enough to check SOOHAN’s full discography. He’s a remix wizard and sample genius. On top of that, he doesn’t limit himself to pop remixes but he mainly incorporates and explores sounds from all over the world. His SoundCloud profile is a true encyclopedia.

Skrillex – Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites (Fabian Mazur Remix)

With the recent release of not one, but two new Skrillex albums, it’s probably safe to say you’ve been inundated with Skrillex remixes as of late. So why not lean into it with a fresh approach? Rather than taking on ‘Rumble’ or one of the iconic producer’s recent releases, Fabian Mazur has instead opted to take on Sonny’s all-time classic ‘Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites.’ With the original now well over a decade old, a fresh flip actually feels like a unique take. Fabian Mazur leverages the vocals and signatures from OG while completely flipping it on its head for a trapped-out twist that’s primed for the FUXWITHIT audience. Flipping a classic is always a difficult task, but Fabian Mazur always rises to the challenges ahead of him.

When all it started, I was there. It’s not a flex, I swear. It was just a coincidence, but I’m in the small circle of privileged people who can say to have witnessed camoufly’s rise since day one. From when it was a kid’s dream, to becoming one of the hottest names in the bass music scene. What a journey it has been! Pretty much everything he’s done so far has become seminal. His colorful and extroverted digital identity (his “brand” if we want to use business terms), his infamous remixes and his promotional campaigns. Even the covers of his EPs are iconic. All part of a calculated master plan or the result of the right mix of genius and spontaneity? This is one of the questions that have arisen over the years, and this is exactly what I promised myself to discover in my irl interview with him. The very first interview of this kind he has ever conceded.

I already had the chance to chat with him here on FUXWITHIT but nothing can compare to an interview in flesh and bone. The release of Faith, the third and last chapter of his genesis EP series, created the perfect occasion to sit down with him face to face. No masks. No filters. Of course, it wasn’t just his music that I wanted to talk about. I wanted to go deeper. I knew there was a lot more to unearth and a man behind the character to discover. The open and honest chat we had while chilling in his bedroom revealed a smart and genuine person who lives his art on a visceral level and who definitely has a lot to tell.

Faith marks the end of chapter 1 of the camoufly story. With more than 50 tracks released in less than three years, I would say it was quite a hectic journey.

To be completely honest, it doesn’t give me that impression at all. A few weeks ago, after I had everything ready for this last EP, I took the time to look back and I realized that yes, indeed it was a rat race. But then again, everything happened absolutely naturally. I didn’t have to force anything. It was a rollercoaster with some ups and downs but I really enjoyed every second of this journey so far and time has really flown.

Are you still having fun making music?

For sure! Making music is still my safe place. The best moment of my days is when I sit in front of my PC and I let the creativity flow.

As mentioned earlier, Faith is the latest installment in this three-EP series. Why did you choose this format and not a full album?

I like to link my personal experiences and progress to the music I create. I am a person who changes at a very fast pace and the process of curating and publishing an album would have been too long, not compatible with my personality and my needs right now. The multiple EP format allowed me more flexibility and, above all, spontaneity.

I still struggle to free myself from the urge to try to gain everything immediately. But I’m working on it and I’m seeing the first results.

Apotheosis was all about escapism and good energy. With Giant you reflected on the difficulties we have to fight towards every day. Which themes does Faith explore?

Lately I have been very fascinated by the idea of faith in general. Nothing to do with the mystical or dogmatic side of religion. For me, it’s much lighter stuff. The aspect that caught my attention is the belief, common to many religious professions, that there is something greater that you can’t aspire to control. The thought that there’s someone who has more power than you and who knows where to direct your life. God, someone, whatever aligns with this idea. I haven’t done extensive research actually. I brushed up on concepts of Christian culture that I had learned between school and catechesis but my idea of faith starts from a much more philosophical than religious approach. The bottom line is to leave much more to chance. A huge source of stress and discomfort in our society is the delusion that we always can turn our life around without much effort. With the internet, TVs (etc etc), we constantly have in front of our eyes all the things we desire and the change seems so close. within the reach of our fingers. This leads us to keep questioning ourselves and overthink about what we need to do more and why we have not yet achieved our goals. I myself am aware that I’m not exempt from this mentality. I admire and envy those artists who manage to publish four or five songs a year and that’s it. I still struggle to free myself from the urge to try to gain everything immediately. But I’m working on it and I’m seeing the first results.

My inspirations are constantly changing, I am constantly evolving, but the passion is still there 100%.

You mentioned that behind the mask you’re a very dynamic human being. What kind of change have you seen in! yourself over the years?

Many, many things. But fortunately, only the things that actually needed to change. There are key aspects of myself that I wanted to remain untouched no matter what and fortunately, that’s exactly what happened. As I just said, I’m still having fun producing music. My inspirations are constantly changing, I am constantly evolving, but the passion is still there 100%. The biggest difference now is what happens after a song is finished. In the first years, when I was dropping remixes after remixes on SoundCloud, the process was terribly spontaneous. If I wake up wanting to release new music, the track was online before I even had breakfast. If I finished a song at three in the morning and wanted others to hear it on the spot, it would end up on my channel in a matter of minutes before I went to sleep. With official releases (and the EPs in particular) everything is way more, well, “official.” There’s way more planning involved. Between timing and deadlines, there is no longer a place for that carefree mentality that used to give me serenity.

Sampling is art. Period. I don’t think there is room to argue.

I see that you are very advocative about the art of sampling and often you don’t miss to tease those who belittle it.

Sampling is art. Period. I don’t think there is room to argue. I admit that when I discovered for the first time in my life that there were people who “stole” pieces of old songs to use in their own new creations, I was disappointed. It seemed to me like cheating. But it didn’t take long for me to understand that finding the right sample is as difficult as creating a melody from 0. I recently made several posts on Twitter where I explain that my music is actually mainly the result of years and years of sampling.

I think the right quote was ” […] when a producer lays down the perfect sample it’s over for me. writing stuff from scratch is great but there’s something that tickles my brain in Madlib or J Dilla’s stuff.

Yeah, exactly. I don’t want to get too nerdy here but the part about Daft Punk’s ‘One More Time’ is very dear to me. Check out the thread because it is truly mind blowing.

Years ago you mentioned in an interview that your main sources of samples were P80SS (a Japanese web archive that has a ton of Asian music from the 70’s and the 80’s) and Andre Navarro’s Youtube channel. What’s your go-to source nowadays?

You probably weren’t expecting this answer, but it’s Tik Tok.

They showed us how being mysterious is not the same as being invisible and inexpressive. It can be so much more.

Since you mentioned them, I take the opportunity to ask you what kind of influence Daft Punk has had on you and on the camoufly project. I think it’s safe to say that they influenced everyone in the past couple of generations but I also believe everyone loves them for different reasons.

Aside from their groundbreaking work with samples, the major reason why I admire Daft Punk I think is one of the most ignored. In the common imagination, they are the ones who have made mysterious their trademark. Indeed, as far as their studio activity is concerned, it is true. But when it comes to telling the fans the story, the meaning, and the message behind their music, it was just the opposite. They created an explicit and vivid world where their music and our imagination can come together. There are the albums, but there’s also the short films and movies which are by no means secondary from a storytelling point of view. This was their way to communicate directly with people. I think it’s incredibly fascinating to see how Interstella 5555 gives meaning to ‘Discovery’ or how Electroma “explains” ‘Human After All’. The latter in particular is a project full of implications. Look at the title alone! Its meaning goes far beyond the music itself, which you may like or not, and it was such a key aspect for them that they decided to contextualize it with Electroma.

They showed us how being mysterious is not the same as being invisible and inexpressive. It can be so much more.

I deduce that this aspect directly influenced the “faceless” component of the camoufly project. Many expected a face reveal to coincide with the release of the first EP.

Actually, camoufly being “masked” is not directly connected with Daft Punk’s helmets or masks used by any other artist. Initially, it has been a stylistic choice mainly dictated by practical reasons. As the project was growing, I asked myself several times if it was appropriate to make the famous “face reveal” as you called it, but I realized that it had become an integral component of the project. I liked it and my fans liked it too. So, why change it? Maybe the time will come, but for now, everyone works perfectly as it is. Rather, albeit with the logical differences, I try to make my own storytelling component that I found in Daft Punk. Twitter and Instagram, Discord and the web are my ‘Discovery’ and ‘Electroma’. Through these means I always try to create my own little world that reflects me and my values. Everyone can enjoy and interpret my music as it wants, but if you want to get to know camoufly and his music on a deeper level, those are the places to be.

Despite the decision to keep your identity classified, you have an incredibly active and extroverted digital presence. Whether they are memes, production tips, or hot takes, you are constantly cranking out content online.

Sometimes I think I should be more “mysterious.” But the truth is that I really believe in the power of connections. And I love having discussions. Interacting with other people is the easiest way to expand your horizons and grow as a person (and as an artist as well). By opening myself this way, sharing my knowledge, supporting my friends and the causes I care about, even showing the dumbest sides of my personality I want to give to those who want to be part of my journey in an open and stimulating environment, where there’s a continuous exchange. Sharing common experiences with which to understand and be understood by others. For example, all ‘Faith’s stems will be available on my site and everyone is more than welcome to download, remix, sample, and experiment with them. As I said before, I am a person who changes very quickly, and being subjected to new stimuli is an essential fuel. This is why I enjoy debating so much with other people who think differently from me. It’s a shame the term different is increasingly associated with the term wrong.

To be honest, I’m done caring so much about what other people think. I’m not the most critic-proof kind person but I realized it’s absurd to be scared to live and do what I want because some people don’t think it’s right.

If I’m not mistaken you were involved in a similar situation not too long ago. There has been a kind of social backlash when you published your Artist-to-Artist NFT guide. Anyway, that doesn’t seem to have stopped you.

To be honest, I’m done caring so much about what other people think. I’m not the most critic-proof kind person but I realized it’s absurd to be scared to live and do what I want because some people don’t think it’s right. There are far more problems to be concerned about than NFTs in my opinion.

So, are there NFT plans for ‘Faith’?

The second single ‘Azure’ was premiered via Sound just a few days ago while I minted ‘told u so’ on Catalog back in January. I don’t think I’m going to turn the whole EP into NFTs but this side of the project is still work-in-progress. Definitely keep an eye on these two platforms!

Last but not least, we need to talk about the cover photo of ‘Faith’.

To conclude the trilogy, I picked the ‘Apotheosis of ST. Ignatius,’ a fresco painted between 1685 and 1694 by the renowned Italian artist Andrea Pozzo. If you want to see it live (an experience I highly recommend), you can find it in the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola, in Rome.

I warn you. This article will be a short one without a detailed “technical” analysis. On the other hand, the closer something gets to perfection, the less there is to say about it. Perfection is not something that can be analyzed, turned inside out. It can only be admired. Stop. You’ll probably have already figured out where this write-up is going, but I feel that it is not the time to say it yet.

“I had this idea sitting on my hard drive for more than a year, but luckily Rob — someone I look up to — took a chance at helping me finish it,” camoufly stated. It was odd to read these words and discover that ‘From The Start’ wasn’t created four-handed by scratch or that it didn’t come straight out of an intensive studio session where camoufly and sober rob locked themselves up for two weeks. Yet, the chemistry between the two artistic interpretations is immaculate. Despite the surprise, I can’t say I couldn’t see this coming. The two already have directly and indirectly given evidence of being on the same wavelength (I remind you that they wrote this collaborative article a while ago).

It’s very interesting how in the official statement camoufly describes ‘From The Start.’ I find the contrast and apparent conflict of many of the terms extremely bizarre and fascinating. You find words like “complex” and “intricate” alongside “colorful” and “genuine.” The reason I dwell on this small detail is because I’d personally never have used terms like the first ones to describe the song. From the point of view of a profane listener (who knows nothing of technical stuff) ‘From The Start’ enchants with its transparency and authenticity. It has the same power as a glass of fresh, crystal clear water. It flows effortlessly. It fully satisfies you. Taking up the concept expressed at the beginning of the article, it’s easy to put together a full-bodied, passionate analysis of an elaborate cocktail. But what can you do when you find yourself in front of a glass of water? What can you say about something so simply perfect? You can just acknowledge its status. Then, coming to the point of this review, this is the only thing I can tell you: ‘From The Start’ is perfect.

Maybe there’s one more thing. That vocal sample is so damn, great.

‘From The Start’ was premiered on Sound (where it sold out in a single minute) but now is available on all streaming platforms.

From releasing his debut EP in January of this year, to keeping fans on their toes with more enthralling content throughout the year, camoufly‘s rapid rise to becoming a major player in the beatmaking scene has been nothing short of incredible. Mastering the genre that he dubs kawaii bounce to a tee, one certainty with camoufly releases is an infectious swing that will make listeners want to dance the night away. More formally, camoufly’s style lies somewhere uniquely between future bass, future beats, trap and house, with every new track providing a distinct combination of those genres to stay true to his style while simultaneously creating something fresh.

To cap off his exquisite year, camoufly returns today with the release of ‘Told U So,’ another captivating bop sure to unleash your inner dancer. First teased on Twitter a few weeks back, the engagement and hype of the preview was enough to know that the full version was going to shine. Pristine sampling and vocal chopping are among camoufly’s strengths, and the execution in ‘Told U So’ is further proof. Engaging listeners with a looping sample sharing the title’s name in the introduction, camoufly gradually adds ethereal effects and shimmering textures to build the intrigue. Slowly, percussion and synths are layered to increase the energy, before a sudden change of pace brings about a groovy bassline that embody the producer’s style to perfection. ‘Told U So’ is sure to bring listeners back to the long days of summer with its warm melodies and catchy appeal.

If your Release Radar is missing something fun, look no further than ‘Told U So.’

I can’t remember the last time I had such a turbulent relationship with a release from one of my favourite artists. The Giant, camoufly’s new effort has been a really challenging listen for me and this article is coming together after an insane number of sessions. After the opulence of Apotheosis, my expectations for camoufly’s second EP were very, very high. But the truth is that I had absolutely no idea what to expect, nor what I’d wanted to hear from him. Something like his iconic remixes? A whole new sound? All and nothing. This weird indecision led me to develop a certain toxic and senseless tension towards this release, which inevitably affected my initial approach to The Giant. As a matter of fact, against all odds, the first listen left me extremely disappointed. It sounded flat, colorless, off-brand. Almost rushed. Quite alarmed by this, I, therefore, decided to take a pause for reflection, leave this review halfway and try to listen to The Giant again calmly once away from the stress of the daily routine.

A few weeks later…

Now that I’m enjoying this EP lying by the sea under the Croatian sun, well it’s a whole different story. Far away from all the hustle and bustle that had overshadowed its beauty, The Giant began to shine with a new, bright light. With a clear mind and with the right time to devote to it, I finally managed to understand and appreciate camoufly’s raid in unknown territories and his growth both artistically and personally.

The five tracks are a little big adventure through the bright and buoyant music world of this (still) mysterious producer. They are all different. All unique. But all, unequivocally descendants of the kawaii bounce. The opening track, ‘rituals’, could easily be the point of convergence between a laxcity album and a Four Tet album. The flow is bouncy, bubbly, and hypnotic while the virtuosities that camoufly paints above it evoke images of unknown lands and mysterious cultures. Here, I totally fell in love with the ending. ‘Million years’ is simply incredible. Indescribable. This one is going to be a hit. No doubt. ‘Pyramids’, which sounds like the natural follow up of ‘Hello Darling’ to me, has been already described in an extensive write-up by John. ‘Sakura,’ as the name suggests, is the most “exotic” piece of the EP as it features some brilliant samples that I’d die to know in which remote region of the web they were discovered. I find the vocals particularly sublime.

Beside the music, it’s impossible to not notice that for The Giant camoufly has drawn fully from classical culture for the title and artwork. The subject of the stunning cover is the gigantomachy, painted by Giulio Romano between 1532-1535 at Palazzo Tè in Mantova. Regarding the concept, camoufly described it with these words.

“To me, The Giant is something that we have to fight towards every day. It’s like when you think you got over something, you think you did something good and you can rest, but suddenly you’ve got to deal with something else. ‘The Giant’ is our life’s pains and difficulties.

Sometimes I feel that some things in life are too big to fight. Maybe someone else experiences the same thing as I do. Over the years I have had to deal with a lot of troubles in my private life, so this episode means a lot to me. It gives me a lot of hope and makes me think that we have to be proud of what we do, of our everyday achievements. At some point we have to believe in ourselves like people believe in a God, putting our life in our own hands, thinking that we have the power to get over things even if they get tougher than they ever were. And just when we have dealt with our lowest lows, then we can appreciate our highest highs.” – camoufly

If you’re waiting to see if there will be a physical release of this EP as well (I just got my vinyl copy of Apotheosis), you can stream The Giant below or on your favorite platform here.

Taking another monumental step within the industry, camoufly is blessing our ears once again with his newest single, ‘pyramids.’ The beginning of a gorgeous new path leading towards even higher success. This is the first track released off his upcoming EP, The Giant. So you definitely won’t want to miss out that.

Having such a wonderful response on his debut project, Apotheosis, the mysterious producer decided to take things up a notch. Known for his colorful and whimsical melodies, the artist has become a complete symbol of inspiration for many listeners and artists within electronic music. His funky and mindful compositions have brought the kawaii bounce genre to new territories. Pushing for next-level evolution! And with his newest work of art, you’ll hear exactly why he’s changing the game no matter what.

‘Pyramids’ represents a turning point to the whole EP. It’s the darkest moment, where the atmosphere, the sounds, the chords get moody while the drums keep pumping along. It’s the first track I made for this EP. It reminds me of a certain way of making and thinking music that has become less relevant these years. Many times I jokingly call my music “backwards-thinking” because I get a lot of ideas from music released 5 to 10 years ago. I think many people forget how many gems were released at that time.- camoufly

‘pyramids’ is a bubbly aftershock, resulting in complete chills and admiration for music as a whole. The classic chord creations molding with jazzy melodies are present in every sense. Taking the audience on a memorable and fun-filled journey through his creative instincts. When all of a sudden, he introduces some soothing and peaceful future bass tones. Holding hands with a bounce-filled rhythmic structure. Forming a wavy and energetic pattern that teleports listeners to a bright and positive wonderland of sound. You’ll be knocking your head and moving your feet from each listen. Making you have the track on repeat. Excited for what’s to come in the future. You’ll be simply amazed and in awe from his continuous talent. So make sure to go support by streaming ‘pyramids’ everywhere!
