“Momma said I got this shit,” JAWNZA boldly proclaims with the opening line to his new single with Lab Group and Player Dave. Listeners will be inclined to agree as every bar of ‘HD‘ effortlessly floats over the thumping kick drum and ethereal chords ringing underneath from start to finish.

The cohesiveness with which ‘HD’ melds the rapper’s voice with the telltale production of Supertask, Potions, and Player Dave might leave you with the impression that JAWNZA has been with the group since day one. Fans may correctly attribute his familiar voice to his previous collaboration with Player Dave, ‘Wakanda.’ Unlike ‘Wakanda,’ however, his cadence on ‘HD’ hardly skips a beat, turning the track into a rich, substance-filled poem. Confidence exudes with every verse. “One of the greatest, hard to beat, sick as fuck,” JAWNZA declares with zero hesitation.

The rapper takes a more introspective digression from the laid-back, witty lyricism at times. In one verse he credits his lover with the line, “Coulda had shawty but she was too treach, I got a wife and I like how she treat me.” Later on, he calls out a harmful lack of diligence in choosing one’s friends with, “Really gotta watch who y’all call y’all company, big bad wolf sittin’ on yo’ futon.” JAWNZA describes himself as exceptional in a number of ways on ‘HD’ and unquestionably has the talent to back it up.

For a time, the future of Lab Group was called into question by fans after the passing of founding member CharlestheFirst. With the release of ‘HD’ and the much-anticipated Lab Group II in the works behind the scenes, it’s clear that fans have a lot to look forward to. Supertask, Potions, and Player Dave have done an incredible job upholding the legacy of their late friend since the release of Lab Group I first made waves in 2021. A blessing to music-lovers everywhere, Lab Group is here to stay. Give ‘HD’ a well-deserved listen below.

Making his distinct imprint as one of the leading minds among bass music producers that primarily dabble in only the vibey-ist of productions, Charlesthefirst seemingly cannot miss. Splitting his time between his original endeavor and his much more hip-hop oriented side project Hawk., he’s attained a wide-ranging prowess that is palpable to anyone that rinses even a single one of his pieces. His last album, No Dimmer, was a lush journey through his beautiful mind, and a reminder of just how damn talented he really is. Just a mere 2 months ago he blessed the world with the release of Pretty Ass Shipwreck, a 15-track affair under his Hawk. persona, which captivated the minds of the entire community. Then, he went right back into the fold with the robustly dense ‘Out Of The Dark‘, the first release off his upcoming album Solus, which left fans eagerly clamoring for their next fix. Now, he’s done it once again with ‘For Now,’ a vibrant love story that effortlessly tugs on the heartstrings.

A soft piano melody instantly sets the mood of sheer contentment and maximum relaxation as you take your first steps into ‘For Now.’ A teleportation device to simpler, somber times and clearer mindsets, this is a piece that commands attention and readily sets an atmosphere with immense confidence. His exceedingly impassioned vocals weave a tale of a strained connection that melts your existence into a puddle of raw emotion; fear and anger are moods for another time. If ‘For Now’ is any inkling of what we can expect from the rest of Solus, fans are in for one hell of a treat. Charlesthefirst continues to build upon his already concrete legacy as a masterful vibe adjuster, and we expect nothing but the utmost success for this youthful, genius artist. Check out ‘For Now’ for yourself below!

Lush, immense, thought-provoking soundscapes that tell stories of distant lands and lives past and present; this is a valid descriptor of the productions that come out of the beautiful mind of Charles Ingalls, better known by his persona Charlesthefirst. Growing up in the Lake Tahoe area afforded him constant immersion in nature, breeding an intense respect for the earth and all the natural frequencies we experience throughout daily life. He’s evolved this into his own works by carrying around a field recorder with him everywhere he goes, taking samples from moments in time and making his music unique and individual. A passion for poetry and the spoken word grew into a love for hip-hop, which then bled into creating beats of his own. Now, he’s built himself up as one of the most progressive minds in bass music, smashing headlining sets all across the country’s festival circuit. His latest mental exploration through sonic vibration is the No Dimmer EP, an immersive and rich 6 track jaunt through life itself.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/696180841″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

The opening track ‘Consumed,’ is your first injection of auditory pleasure, coating your entire being in a bubble where outside worries are a thing of the past. The hip-hop elements are readily apparent, sporting an infectious beat that gets the hips in motion. The melodies are gorgeous and mixed impeccably and the vocals are sprinkled delicately throughout. The song takes a much darker turn in the latter half, trading airy melodies for popping basslines and much darker vocals both in terms of tone and depth. This dichotomy between the two pieces makes it feel more like a story is unfolding right in front of your ears. This story element is a common theme amongst Charlesthefirst’s works, and a sign of a master artist at work.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/689535205″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Next on the EP is ‘Room to Breathe,’ a song immensely stimulating at the atomic level. The opening feels like a sunrise on a gorgeous morning, leaving you looking forward to what the rest of the day has to offer. The build is elongated, feeling the gentle growth of energy as you settle into its grasp. Seems like a warm, rainy AM affair, taking “mellow” to new heights. The first drop is deep and exceptionally clean, but doesn’t last long. This is reminiscent of having to take a drive after an event in your life that sets you off kilter, needing literal room to breathe and space for your thoughts. The second drop is the sunset of the day, ramping things down as the shadows grow larger and the pace of life slows ever increasingly.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/696178981″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

‘Ove-4’ takes up the #3 spot on No Dimmer, continuing the chill aesthetic that is so prevalent throughout this body of work. Exhibiting major lo-fi hip-hop vibes with added bassy accentuations, this is a piece you could put on repeat and comfortably go about your day, or even study to. Aided by vocals by Ari Appel, a sense of longing for someone you can’t have is felt. The end of the song drifts off, each note becoming progressively quieter, much like the intense feelings we feel for others until that attachment is severed and slowly drifts away to nothingness.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/696178181″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

The title track ‘No Dimmer’ comes in at the number four spot, arguably the most energetic of the songs up to this point. The first drop is a true pleasure on the ears, incorporating some of the cleanest wubs listeners’ have ever heard into a track that is incredibly fun to get down to. After the early initial drop, the track never reaches another high of point of energy, trading instead for emphasis on magnificent vocals courtesy of Chynna. This gradual decrease of excitement spells out the reaction to meeting someone new. A beginning rush as a connection is established, and then a slow descent back to stasis, the connection cut and the longing for another awakens.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/696176351″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

‘Limitless’ is the 2nd to last on the EP, another prime example of how well-made this entire body of work is. The melodies are varied, complex, and gorgeous, layered perfectly with the surely present but far from overpowering drums and bass lines. An easy song to simply vibe out too, cutting off other senses will amplify the little accents you normally wouldn’t take in. Notes seem to hit, then shatter into glassy rain droplets, reaching out to the next with ease, nothing ever feeling forced or anything less than completely organic.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/696175581″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

‘Hair in the Wind’ rounds out this collection, feeling not like your hair catching the breeze driving with the top down, but rather walking through a field of sunflowers with a light breeze. The sun lightly hitting your face and the gusts every now and then having enough force to move a blade of hair, but not enough to do anything more than remind you of its presence. Listening hard enough you’ll pick up on the sounds of birds in the background, little chirps and the sounds of their wings fluttering placed throughout. Hifi water droplets are also used, making this piece feel like an actual embodiment of nature, reconnecting every listener with their most primal of selves emotionally.

Charles Ingalls has a mind unlike any other artist currently making bass music, and every listener of this EP will surely reflect the same sentiments. No Dimmer is immeasurably robust and exquisite, eliciting a wide array of emotions out of each listener, an enthralling, gentle ride from start to finish. This is a body of work that will leave you thankful it exists, a beacon of hope and a ticket to genuine feeling, something the world is in short supply of lately.

After recently sharing the stage for a number of stops of The Ascent tour, it was only a matter of time before Lake Tahoe native CharlestheFirst and Philadelphia-based tiedye ky melded interests in the form of collaboration. Both possessing heavily hip-hop influenced production backgrounds and a knack for experimentation, ‘Love and Enemies’ provides further inquisition into the minds and vision of two forerunners rapidly progressing through the electronic music scene.

The track depicts a vivid clash of emotions, in which a carefully woven, impassioned lead unravels into a challenging and chaotic drop. In contrast to many track arrangements, the percussion shoulders the main potency of the track, providing a rigid contrast to soft strings and resonating fills that give an insatiable texture and depth to the track.
