Chuurch and Strange Future have made a lot of noise with their body melting collaboration ‘Rabbit Hole.’ Since its release a lot of eyes have been stuck on them waiting for their next moves. We are so proud to be able to bring you to wonderland through the premiere of the official ‘Rabbit Hole’ remix pack. The ‘slowmo/space/bass/rap’ original has undergone five different treatments, that include four actual remixes from as many different artists, plus a special dub edit.

LICK is the one that kicks off the EP and, with a huge dose of bass steroids, immediately pumps ‘Rabbit Hole’ to a mid-tempo stomper, Rezz or I Am Sid style. Secondly comes Kotek with my personal favourite of the collection. Back from two stellar joint ventures with the superstars Rezz and Gramatik, the Canadian producer kills the competition throwing on the plate an unreal acid-infused post Dubstep remix. The drastic mutation from the unsettling but soft intro and breakdown, with their smooth groove and filtered voice, to the illuminating and haunting drop is the icing on the cake to this little creative masterpiece.

Next in line is SYN, bringing in their ‘new rave’ signature sound and preferring a dose of good old abrasiveness and brute force to the hypnotic effect of the original track. Despite the previous examples, here the slow pace ends up penalizing the success of the track that, with higher bpm, could have been way more impactful. After all these dark exercises there’s also space for some classy Tech House vibes courtesy of Canadians Cloverdale. With this remix, ‘Rabbit Hole’ ditches its bass niche and becomes appetizing to a way larger segment of public, who may not be used to the crazier stuff and instead is wide open for a classic housey beat. Ending things off is the dark, deep and pulsing DUB edit, which serves as a strong finale.

If, after RL Grime‘s mix, Don’t Die At Work and ADBC‘s compilations, there’s still space for quality music in your spooky Halloween playlists, don’t miss enjoying this Remix EP from start to finish. Stream below and grab it here.

It’s the end of the month and that means it’s time for another installment of Focus Five. If you missed our first edition here’s the lowdown: each month Oggie & I (Colin) will be showcasing five of our favourite fresh finds. These are artists who recently landed on our radar and absolutely blew us away. This month we’ve got a touch of everything from a Canadian “lean bass” duo, to Australian and American bass producers and even a tinyghost. Check the list below and add a few new favourites to your regular listening list.

Charles Nimbus

Boston based producer Charles Nimbus is a beast on the low. Whether it’s pounding bass tunes or stunning laidback feels, Charles Nimbus posses the ability to conjure both, sometimes even within the same song. Take ‘visage’ for example. While it starts off sounding like it could be part of a relaxation mix, it quickly veers into a deep bass monster. Midway through it begins to drift toward tranquility once more before getting utterly abusive. It’s like doing yoga in the midst of a battlefield and somehow remaining unscathed. ‘light pillar’ drifts deep into the feels. It’s walking through a long trail where time ceases to exist, finally coming upon a small pond and looking down to truly see your reflection, for what feels like the first time. If that sounds a little to light for you tastes, you can always ‘hit the pipe’ and experience what it’s like to smoke PCP with a gang of samurai. Charles Nimbus’ music is a ride and I’m buying tickets any chance I get.

Chuurch

Since last month there’s been no one popping on my radar, nor popping off more impressively than “lean bass” duo Chuurch. Could we interest you in a remix of Zeds Dead x Illenium? A spot alongside the Deadbeats daddies at their Dead Rocks showcase? Or how about an all original EP on NEST? I think it’s appropriate to call these two Vulcan, as they’re most certainly working with fire, and a bass sound that can only be described as godly. While much of their previous output was in the 120-130 BPM range, they certainly seem to have found their groove with maddening midtempo. Deep and dirty, the lead single from Uunion is set to destroy dancefloors. Look out for them in a city near you, and praise be to the bass gods!

Hotwagner

When Oggie sent me Hotwagner’s ‘_thro’ my first reaction was, “oh what the fuck!?” From the cartoony meets trap intro, to the brain-bending first drop, I knew we had stumbled onto something special, and it only gets deeper from there. Pressing play on ‘_taukabou’ will provide a similar mind-rattling experience (switch cartoon inspiration for a laser shoot-out on this one). But like many others on this list, it’s not just slappers in his arsenal; Hotwagner can also ride the wave with the best of them, as seen on ‘_anywho’. If originality is something you respect and getting weird is something you revel in, Hotwagner is your new obsession.

SIlva

It shouldn’t be a surprise when we find out that an artist we’re really fucking with comes from Australia, because as far back as this blog goes we’ve been wowed by what’s coming from down under. Another such artist seemingly straight out of the Aussie intersection of future bass and trap is Silva. While his output remains minimal in his nearly two year presence, it hits one of our core values: quality over quantity. There’s a clear, unspeakable energy that each of his productions exudes. You’re almost always left wondering what you just listened to, but wanting more. ‘Escape’ and ‘intentions’ are awesome displays of explosive power while ‘Jungle’ and ‘vnforgettable’ offer a more restrained approach. Here’s to hoping we get more soon, because yeah, we’re greedy.
-OJ

tinyghost

When I first stumbled onto tinyghost I felt like an astronaut uncovering a new planet. This feeling was aided by the fact that my introduction to the small apparition was the aptly titled ‘Jupiter.’ Part cinematic and worldly, part sci-fi adventure, the track is like instantly understanding an entire civilization based solely upon sound. It’s an enlightening and awakening exploit that weaves in just a touch of darkness to keep things riveting. ‘Blocked’ maintains a similar space-inspired energy but gets darker and dirtier. Rounding out tinyghost’s catalog are ‘Findme’ & ‘Dou,’ two elegant bangers that sample 50 Cent and Missy Elliot respectively. But these aren’t your standard bootlegs, these are complete re-imaginations with familiar undertones. The combination of familiar and fresh is nothing short of magic. It’s been six months since we’ve heard new music from tinyghost, but next week the silence will be demolished with a fresh EP that’s set to feature blake skowron, Laxcity, COPYCATT, and Khundi Panda – 쿤디판다. tinyghost is about to set the spring on fire. Get up on the ghost now.

Newcomers, Chuurch, are coming in hot with their freshman EP Uunion.

Fostered by Skrillex’s nebulous media platform, Nest, the duo (Jeff Willson and Justin MacLean) have been attracting attention since 2016, but reignited interest when they released a taste of their stripped down style in a MiniMix at the start of 2018. Uunion is officially the first EP release of 2018 for Nest.

Chuurch’s sound is meaty bass, with seasoning- there is little left to the imagination, but it’s satiating. There are times when bass drops and build ups can be cluttered into a track with piercing sirens and hyper erratic synths- Chuurch’s vibe is completely different. Some have described it as Lean Bass, a focus on bass lines complimented by other aggressive, dark-electro elements. This bravado that Chuurch has delved into is not dependent on fearsomeness or fangs, but instead a darker, more illusive luster.

The first single from this dank collection is ‘Rough It’, which is a plucky, but booming concoction ripe with murky voice clips, and thundering treble. Next up is ‘One Mind’, a quirky journey through billows of bass, crunchy, laser synths, and murky vocals with numerous transitions- its a maze of various tempos, and amorphous, deep sounds to get lost in. ‘Mobbin’ brings it back a bit, with a steadier pace, and techno-house feels, but still pulses, and envelopes.

There are elements to this EP that show growth from their previous releases with Deadbeats, Perfect Driver, and This Aint Bristol. The sound has marinated, and been tested through selective appearances and performances since their inception. This EP feels like the frothy crest of their wave of success; it is a victory lap of sorts.

Each track plays up different aspects of the classic genres Chuurch has been influenced by. Flavors of 90’s hip-hop, techno-house, with a frosting of banging bass make this a mash up of all things nostalgic, but some how its has a nasty, trap aroma. Etching out their own little niche in the electronic music world, Chuurch shows that they are on their way to owning the block.

The freshest single, ‘Erase the Pain’ showcases Blak Trash’s storytelling rhymes about finding solace in the caresses of a sub-woofer, and the inky darkness of a dance floor. The cocky, sauntering melody keeps pace with Trash’s laid back, but exacting tone. Chuurch’s layering and break down of different elements through this track show off their phrenetic energy and their ability to bleed different elements together just to shred them apart.

Deadbeats has unfurled a vicious collection of flaming hot tracks that push the limits of electronic music and this dimension.

This label has been shredding it up on tour since the beginning of the summer, and they have serious line-ups for the last two shows of the year in Seattle and New York City. Deadbeats have signed some of the darker characters in the bleeding edge of dark electronic music. It makes sense that they would want to showcase some of their dankest artists with a powerful compilation of rib rattling bass, eerie hooks, and seething synths. Here is a taste of what’s part of this spread.

Fresh from their Australian and New Zealand sets, YOOKiE sparks the first match with ‘Intruder Alert’. This track is spacey, taking it’s time to build up, collecting sounds like hapless victims along the way, to a piercing crest of crunchy snares, and bold synths. It’s over before it has even really begun, but is a gruesome demonstration of YOOKiE’s fascination with the sharpest edges of dark electro.

Another surprisingly catchy and brutal laden with ballooning bass is Chuurch’s ‘Purple Ghost’ featuring Bricc Baby. This simple collection of sounds is brought to life with a funky-fresh vibration that is difficult to resist getting down to. The break down highlights the not only the crispy clean sounds, but how they build so well on each other, especially with the elastic, and overarching pure synths in the back.

On the tail end of this Deadbeats medley is LICK’s ‘Push’. By no means a snore, this high energy, and plucky rhythm is coated with sticky distortions, booming bass, and thrilling effects. When the beat breaks, the classic techno nature of the synths are revealed just to be annihilated by the timeless growler bass line, and it is driven hard to the end. It goes down the hatch smooth and smoky. Try this track and the other ten in total below.
