Although the collective has been quiet over the last few months, the team behind Crystals have been hard at work curating their fifth compilation, vying to both meet the high standard of their previous releases while going above and beyond what is expected. This week, the efforts of the Vancouver-based collective came to fruition, as they have finally unleashed their nine-track effort to the masses and, to no surprise, have exceeded these expectations.

Teaming up with Montreal-based Checkpoint, Crystals have hand-selected nine forward-thinking tracks from a plethora of genres and from the underground’s most promising artists. Familiar faces So Sus and Shwirl came together on ‘When’ to create an emotive future bass-leaning ballad, while DJ Ride and ELEX have gone full mad scientist on their banging bass belter. Beat-making machine FLY also makes an appearance with the minimally wonky ‘Blend’, while Bouhi flexes mean sound design and raw energy in his dubstep dinger. You’ll even find some gnarly jungle terror in this eclectic choice of quality tracks.

All of this to say that Crystals and Checkpoint’s latest compilation is a multi-genre masterpiece bound to have one of your next favourite songs. Check it out below!

We’ve loved watching Shwirl‘s evolution as a producer over the past few months, growing from a young, confused 16-year-old in ‘confusion‘ to slowly yet surely finding a clear path ahead. This certainty is reflected in his latest track titled ‘Together’ that we are stoked to premiere today. When asked about his progress, Shwirl states, “I feel that ‘Together’ marks a point where I can say that I’ve set path for myself. I’m phasing out of that uncertainty that I felt before and things are starting to come together (lol), hence the hands touching in the artwork and the title.”

‘Together’ marks Shwirl’s fifth release on the Vancouver-based collective Crystals, and there’s no denying his music is a perfect fit. Elegant melodies are backed by punchy percussion in his latest work, with the latter reminiscent of Getter’s new vibe, yet easily unique enough to stand out on its own. These are further intensified through crisp vocal chops and reverberating basses in the drop section, highlighting Shwirl’s talents in manipulating samples and creating tasteful tunes.

The young producer thanks the Crystals squad for his growth, stating, “the biggest reason we push ourselves is because the idea of Crystals is to put the spotlight on amazing music that otherwise would not be heard. I think I can say it’s the first track that I’m really proud of, and I’m not sure I could’ve done it without the motivation and the support the Crystals squad has given me in the past 1-2 years“. We’re all for this community of producers supporting each other. Check out ‘Together’ below!

Considering the demand, ELEX decided it would be best just put the stems out along with the track as a free download on SoundCloud. From there, he let producers work their magic and send him their final product. Given the amount and quality of submissions he received, he opted to drop a full remix EP for ‘Nicotine’ and today we have the pleasure of premiering it!

The pack features a wide array of talents including shwirl, sollbury, Soummit, Alter Natives, Soulse!, Aleksey Burn, and a fresh VIP from ELEX himself. Each remix packs a unique vibe ranging from Indie electronic feels (Alter Natives, shwirl) to hard-hitting trap (sollbury, Elex’s VIP), future bass (Soulse!, Soummit) and even some Rezz-inspired dark electro (Aleksey Burn). Every track is on point but my favourite standouts are definitely woodpile’s ‘Blow’ and Sanguru’s ‘Back 2 Life’. The pitched vocal tweaks remind me of trap’s early beginnings while the wild sound design keeps things futuristic on ‘Blow.’ ‘Back 2 Life’ bangs like no other, but it’s the slowed-up moombah-infused breakdown at the end the clinches it.

Birthed in Vancouver and grown across the globe, Crystals is the latest artist collective you need to know. They first caught our ear with Crystals Vol. 1, but it’s their latest installment that has truly blown us away. Founded by Canadian producer So Sus, the collective has a strong disregard for genre-based barriers. Opting instead to showcase a myriad of forward-thinking sounds with each quarterly release. Their goal is two fold: showcase the best under-the-radar talent and help strengthen the music community in their native Vancouver. “There is a lot of talent in the city and we want to showcase and cultivate that whether through shows or feedback sessions or any other wild ideas we may have. Ultimately we want musicians to stop leaving the city, it just seems once musicians get some success they tend to move to Toronto, Montreal, LA or wherever,” says So Sus.

The collective also has an open door submission policy allowing artists a chance to be featured on upcoming compilations. How do you land on their next compilation? “Basically, the defining factor is the freshness of the musical ideas. There were some submissions that were actually good songs but for us, things like progressive house has been around for years and just doesn’t feel very fresh anymore. So main criteria is to be more forward thinking. There were a few songs that were just not there in terms of mixdown or what not, which was sad. But style wise were on the money. We are not only looking for club bangers especially on Vol. 1 of our compilation, we had these almost calm ballads. So it’s not genre specific at all. Which is great because we even got some R&B tracks as submissions which we would have loved to feature on the compilation but the technical/mixing side of them was just not there,” explains So Sus. So if you’re an upcoming artist with some unreleased heat be sure to slide into their inbox wearecrystals@gmail.com.

As for Crystals Vol. 2, it’s their biggest release date. With their submission volume and quality increasingly greatly it’s a massive win for fans. The 8 track offering gives us insight into the future of music. Songs like Zhuk’s ‘Gump Life’ and Yagi’s ‘Better’ prove that future bass is still evolving in the underground. ‘Slow Death’ and ‘Who Left The Car Door Open’ fuse emotional appeal with hard hitting trap for sounds that are beautifully banging. Lazy G’s ‘Godmode’ is just what the title ensues. Blending looped and pitched rap vocals with brain-bending bass and a wordly bounce makes it a clear standout. Speaking of wordly, ‘Sombrero’ takes you to Mexico where Mariachi meets trap. The project is rounded out by Moxsa’s Fergie flipping ‘VIP’ anthem and the laid-back groove of Baxters ‘Kim Chi’. Every track on this compilation goes and showcases the wealth of underground talent the world has to offer.
