PREMIERE: Culprate Crafts Soundscape of the Unknown in ‘Area 51’

John Hislop, better known as Culprate, is among electronic music’s most influential yet underrated artists. For years, the Bristol-based creative has been delivering cutting-edge material that broadly falls under the umbrella of bass music, but contains, and is often driven by, soul-stirring musicality that few in the scene can mimic. From the legendary Nightmares in Reality EP, to his foray into story-telling experimental albums, Culprate refuses to conform to mainstream expectations and constantly strives for innovation.

After six years away from Inspected, a label that the artist has called home on multiple occasions, Culprate recently announced his return to the imprint with the Normal EP, an eight-track journey that promises to resonate deeply with fans both old and new. Due for release on October 31st, the project showcases the artist’s signature technical mastery while delivering a fresh blend of stylistically diverse tracks, finding a perfect home on Inspected where innovation strives. Ahead of the release, we have the extreme pleasure of premiering ‘Area 51’ today.

Doing what they do best as some of the top taste-makers in the scene, Inspected are doing an unprecedented five drops in five weeks for this year’s The Movember Collection. #tbt – Modestep – On Our Own (feat. Culprate)

While some artists frequently post mixes or sets for all to enjoy on SoundCloud, many artists choose to keep them at a minimum to entice fans to enjoy their live performances in person. So, when a rare mix from the latter type of artist comes to light, it’s always a trip knowing what vibes they create in a live setting with their song selection and progression. My favourite part of these elusive mixes is the odd throwback tune thrown into the mix, as it offers insight into the origins and influences of some of my favourite producers.

This exact scenario happened a few months back when an infrequent mix from Chee blessed my SoundCloud feed, only to be amazed by his unusual yet uncanny track selection. The track that surprised me the most was the cinematic ‘On Our Own’ from Modestep and Culprate, a true gem from the former’s 2015 London Road album. As two pioneers in heavy bass music, there’s no denying that Modestep and Culprate have their fair share of classics. Hearing ‘On Our Own’ brought back a huge wave of nostalgia, with influences from garage, dubstep and drum & bass all coming together to hit you right in the feels.
